WWYD: Airplane, carseat, and car rental ...
We are going to Disney at the end of March ( ). DD is 2 1/2. We will be renting a car while we are there (staying off property). We are flying to and fro with stop overs.
I originally thought we would bring our carseat, but now I'm thinking it's going be a HUGE pain in the butt! a)Do you think we should bring it and use it on the plane? b)Bring it and check it? c) Don't bring it and rent one from the car rental place?
If you have rented a carseat from a car rental place, what has your experience been?
TIA for any insight you can offer!

B.
That's what we always do. Its the easiest. We put in a laundry bag and check it.
I've heard horror stories with trying to rent one and you aren't ever guaranteed one, even with a reservation!

Re: WWYD: Airplane, carseat, and car rental ...
Honestly anytime we have traveled we have used our own car seat, for a numbe of reasons... 1 - being...we know its never been in an accident. 2 - we know who and what has been in it 3 - my DD loves her car seat. so we know she will be very comfortable in it and won't mind being in it. 4 - we always use it on the plane -- for the reason listed above and she doesn't mind being in it on the plane.

Re: WWYD: Airplane, carseat, and car rental ...
DS was in his infant car seat when we flew to FL and we brought our own. We did not pay for a seat for him but were advised to prepare to gate check it that way if the flight was not sold out, DS could sit in his own seat... which was the case both ways. That was so nice. If there were no seats we would have just gate checked it.
We opted out of the rental for reasons stated above.
We also did not bring the click in base and just belted the seat in (has hooks for old school instal).

The next time we travel with be with an infant and a 3.5yr old. We will probably check older DS seat and bring the infant carrier on the plane or gate check if the flight is fully booked.

If you are getting a rental car, then take your own carseat.

Re: WWYD: Airplane, carseat, and car rental ...
Choice A for me. I've done it while traveling alone with my daughter and honestly, it wasn't a big deal at all. I had a carseat bag and was able to carry it over my shoulder and my DD was in a stroller (she was 2). I boarded early to get the carseat into the seat and deplaned after other passengers so I had time to put it back in the bag. And I was happy to be able to use my own carseat on land.

Re: WWYD: Airplane, carseat, and car rental ...
If we check it, would we do it when we check bags, or when we board the plane? I'm just concerned about lugging it around the airport and then when we have to get to our connecting flight. But maybe we wouldn't have to do that ...

Some come with a strap! Makes it easier to carry with all the other luggage

See, we've never really had an issue with the laundry bag, you can make a strap out of the tie closure and we usually put it on top of the stroller or something. Its not IN the bag for that long, only from when you pick it up at the baggage carousel to the rental car place, which isn't far at all

I have a carseat bag you can borrow.
I don't trust the rental car carseats. I used one once, it was the worst thing I've ever seen.
Or, you can see if anyone you know has the carseat/stroller on wheels. I always borrow my cousins, and it's a lifesaver

We have a car seat bag with wheels. its from GRACO. i think i got it from BuyBuyBaby for like $30.
We always bring our own car seat and bring it on the plane with us for DS to sit in. I find it so much easier for us bc it guarantees that DS will sit in his seat the entire flight!

Please do! It will make me feel better being that it just sits in my basement throughout the entire year.
Also, you check it with your bags if you are checking it, so you don't carry it for very long!

Re: WWYD: Airplane, carseat, and car rental ...
I would bring your own, and I would bring it on the plane. I'm saying this after the airline lost our checked carseat a few weeks ago, and had to give us one of their crap loaners for a few days until they found it. Apparently it never made it on the plane out of Orlando.

Lillykat told me about this.
I am going to get that for DS to go to Disney in a couple of months. But I am not taking DS carseat because we are staying on Disney grounds for our hotel and they have a bus/shuttle to/from airport to hotel.

Re: WWYD: Airplane, carseat, and car rental ...
We rented carseats when used car service to pick up/drop off from our home to the airport when we went away in Nov. The car rental places do not install the seats, you do and they weren't latch. They were very basic. DH and myself couldn't really secure them properly so they were loose. Luckily we were only going 30 miles. As far as the plane, the kids were fine and you defiantly don't need it for the flight.
If you are unsure, I would bring it and check it.

Re: WWYD: Airplane, carseat, and car rental ...
When we traveled, we brought our own car seat and gate-checked it. We have a car seat bag on wheels that we got from BBB. When DS was 6 months old, we accidentally left the base to the infant carrier in our car and were forced to rent a car seat just to borrow a base. When I saw the seat that came with the base, I was a little . The seat was really old looking and who knows what kid chewed on the straps. I was happy to at least have brought a seat that I knew where it came from.

For future reference you can use your infant seat without a base but you have to see the directions to see how to install it.
I would definitely bring the car seat because 1) you don't know if it has been in an accident before, 2) I have heard horror stories about getting there and the rental place was OUT of car seats even though one was reserved, they were very old, or very dirty, you have to install it yourself and they don't give directions etc. I personally wouldn't chance it - I would just get a car seat bag and either check it or bring it onto the plane.
I didn't know this but I was looking at Southwest and noticed that they have on their site that the FAA strongly recommends that children under 40 lbs be in either a car seat OR a CARES system. I am pretty sure I am going to get the CARES system so we don't have to lug DD#1's car seat since we will already be bringing one for the baby and I don't want to lug two with me.
Have a great trip!

Re: WWYD: Airplane, carseat, and car rental ...
We rented one at the car rental place the last time we traveled and it worked out very well. We didn't have to lug around DD's huge carseat, which we would've had to check since she's too big to sit in it comfortably on the plane now - her feet touch the back of the seat in front of her, even worse if they lean back.
We rented from National in Orlando. The seat looked brand new. It was immaculate.
The last time we checked our carseat, it came back with the side foam damaged. Our seat has the foam that curls around the side and the outside of it was damaged.
