Sasha just bumped her head-- any cause for concern? UPDATED with Q
Should I try waking her up in the middle of the night? I was reading on BabyCenter and they recommend this to make sure she CAN wake up.
The nurse at my doc's office just said to watch her-- and it's not like she fell from a distance- she was just sitting on the floor and hit her head on the lower shelf of my coffee table.
I don't want to disturb her sleep, but her health is more important. Am I overeacting??
**********
She was sitting up by herself and I stepped 2 feet away, and I was watching her the whole time.
I thought she had clearance if she were to tip, but she hit her head on the bottom of the coffee table. She fell very slowly-- so, it probably wasn;t too bad.
She was crying, but I calmed her down pretty quickly. She's ok, right??

I would assume that she should be fine. You can always call the ped if you are worried.
When DS was little, he would be sitting down, then just tip over straight backwards and hit his head on the floor. Had us panicked many times, but he was always fine.

I'm sure she is ok. Just keep an eye on her tonight.
My DS has already feel on some stuff. He always cries for 2 seconds, then back to normal.

Re: Sasha just bumped her head-- any cause for concern?
gret little "guideline" for BFing mammas... if they get "hurt" and stop crying right away when they start nursing most likely they are fine and it was a gentle bump. IF they are incosolable even when you try to BF then you should be more cautious and have her checked out. This is JUST A GUIDELINE... their heads are pretty tough though! Crying is a GOOD SIGN when kids get hurt, its when they are obviously hurt and they don't act approproately that we REALLY worry!
Alexa has been crash testing her "helmet" these days A LOT..... so far so good!

Is there a bump? If she stopped crying right away, odds are all is ok.

Abby hit her head today too- she was also sitting and I was close by and thought she had room to go back into the pillow I had on the floor...she missed the pillow and banged her head- she cried- I felt awful... but she is fine. I am sure Sasha is fine too... Just keep an eye on her

You only need to wake them at night if they sustained a concussion.... if she is acting completely normal she is probably fine... but do what makes YOU feel comfortable!

Listen, don't beat yourself up. It's not going to be the last time she gets hurt. Their kids, it happens, It sucks but it happens. They're durable.

ITA! I know the first time is scary, but soon she will fall from the standing position and bonk her head. She will be ok. If she is acting/eating fine then I am sure she is ok.

I agree.
My DH is an EMT for the FDNY, he deals with this all the time and he says unless she blacked out or lost consciousness, she is fine.

It's ok Randi.. the first few times is hard.. but she WILL do it again.. its not your fault.. its how they learn to move nad get their balance etc. Mother nature provided extra "cushioning" inside their brains and bodies for this!!

Re: Sasha just bumped her head-- any cause for concern? UPDATED with Q
I am just a worry wart.
I just went in her room and stroked her hair-- she moved and rubbed her eye a little-- so, I guess she's not unconscious!
Watch, she will sleep through the night tonight- but I will be up all night anyway worrying!

I would personally go in every hour or so and just see if you see her flinch, etc, if you are worried. I have done it when DD got hit with the bouncer bar.

so, just go in to make sure she stirs-- I don't have to actually wake her up right?
I basically have checked on her every hour since she went to sleep. I probably will continue to do the same throughout the night.

Yes, just see if she stirs. You may wake her, but I would poke DD slightly or just move her arm, or watch her move on the monitor. That would mean she's not unconsious (which I am totally sure you have nothing to worry about).

Im sorry, but are you being serious?
I think it is worse for you to be constantly poking her all night.
IF she had a concussion or something serious that you would need to worry about she would have other symptoms.

I am serious. But when I did this my DD got hit very hard.
But if Randi is worried, if it makes her feel better, and she doesn't mind risking waking her DD (which she said she doesn't), no harm done in the grand scheme of things. Esp for a worried mom whose DC hit their head for the first time.

I can understand our concern as a mother, but as a former Critical Care Healthcare worker, IF she had a concussion or head injury she could still flinch because of the involuntary and voluntary nervous system of her brain. Its MORE important to observe her interactions when she is awake.. if she is behaving normally , she is fine...
I do understand its scary when your babies hit their head, but I'm serious when I say they have a lot of padding. Babies brains contain MUCH MORE CSF (cerebral spinal fluid) than most adults to protect their brain from situation like this since its COMPLETELY normal for them to topple over and bump their noggins... It would be MORE COMMON for an adult to sustain a concussion from falling over like this then an infant or child.
If you are that worried Rani, call your ped, they should be able to assure your fears.
I hope you have a good night!
