Posted by dm24angel Judging is when you dont know facts ....IMO anyway. Im calling it based only on what you all have actually said...not guessing or assuming based on my own assumptions.
Since "your" definition of Judgment is incorrect, I thought I'd post it for you. As you'll see the mention of "knowing FACTS" is never mentioned. Just thought I'd clear that up for you! From Dictionary.com:
judg·ment Pronunciation Key [juhj-muhnt] –noun
1. an act or instance of judging.
2. the ability to judge, make a decision, or form an opinion objectively, authoritatively, and wisely, esp. in matters affecting action; good sense; discretion: a man of sound judgment. 3. the demonstration or exercise of such ability or capacity: The major was decorated for the judgment he showed under fire.
4. the forming of an opinion, estimate, notion, or conclusion, as from circumstances presented to the mind: Our judgment as to the cause of his failure must rest on the evidence.
5. the opinion formed: He regretted his hasty judgment.
6. Law. a. a judicial decision given by a judge or court. b. the obligation, esp. a debt, arising from a judicial decision. c. the certificate embodying such a decision and issued against the obligor, esp. a debtor. 7. a misfortune regarded as inflicted by divine sentence, as for sin.
8. (usually initial capital letter) Also called Last Judgment, Final Judgment. the final trial of all people, both the living and dead, at the end of the world.
Are you kidding me?
I said IMO, this is just silly now.
How is correcting my grammar about the Topic at hand?
Seems you have strayed from it, to just wanting to be right?
I'm not correcting your GRAMMAR just your vocabulary. Your notion of "judgment" is technically INCORRECT. It's link to this thread is that you're accusing people of being judgmental and your train of thought as to why is incorrect.
There's no room for OPINIONS when discussing a DEFINITION.
Its sad that you stooped to this level. This is why conversations fail, because someone starts acting in a way just to be right and attacking everything a person says.
My opinion is your making yourself look very silly right now.
I guess I'm done with the discussion.

I volunteer at the Mary Brennan Soup Kitchen in Hempstead every single Monday sometimes more.... I cook, serve, and clean up after the less fortunate.. Before we go out and start our day we have a meeting with all of the volunteers.. The person in charge of the facility is a paid worker.. There is a specific mentality you must have as a volunteer or you are asked to leave,. The attitude is to smile and treat every single person that is a "guest" there with dignity and respect... There is a "no questions asked policy" Any one is welcome.. You can pull up in a BMW and you can get a meal, a shower, and as much clothing asd you can carry.. On your way out if you are still hungry you can take a bagged meal.. You can take everyone of the bagged meals if you want.. "No Questions asked" This is how I try to look at things like this when I run across them in everyday life.. The first thing I say to myself is "there but for the grace of God go I" And I refuse to go into a judgemental state of mind... Alot of the people smell like Alcohol and appear to be abusing drugs... Who knows why this is happening or why the have no job, or are not in treatment.. Its none of my business. My business is to help them.. I know I would have helped those people on that line and paid for there groceries.. Only because I am sensitive to it and not "shocked" by it anymore.. Before I started volunteering I would have froze just like the OP and thought about it later..
I give you credit for being able to be nonjudgemental and just help. Not easy for many people, you are very special. You are a real sweetie.
yes, you are awesome.
whatever the case...whatever WHATEVER WHATEVER...I hope those people didn't have to starve.
i mean, how well can they be "scamming the system" if they still didn't have the money to buy FOOD.
And I will reiterate, it is your DUTY as a citizen to report fraud when you suspect it or come across it. Not doing so, but using the experience to "strengthen" your argument on a chat board helps NO ONE.

Ophelia, who is this post to?
the first part is agreeing with you to the poster we BOTH quoted.
the second part is general...directed to anyone that suspects to have seen fraud and would read this at any point in the life span of this thread/chat board .

Oh ok. That's what I thought but wasn't sure if it was a general or to someone specific.

Actually, judgment and judgmental have two different definitions. I think she was referring to the latter. Sorry for barging in like this, but I couldn't refrain from pointing this out. Words are too important to me.

And I'm surprised at that comment from you Beth, considering you previously helped out someone who did in fact have a cell phone and didn't begrudge that person for it. Remember? Kids, job hunting = need for a phone?
This in not particular to Beth, but plenty of posters on here have received lots of help from other posters and weren't criticized for not giving up things like cell phones, computer connections, cigarettes, etc. Why are we so quick to be judgemental and critical with people we don't know?
I actually can't believe some of things on here are from some of the same people who were so fast to help people they don't even know or truly know if the stories were true or not!

Re: saw something the other days that is still bothering me
One of my very good friends SIL and BIl are both lawyers... they waited to have kids, until they were estblished in their carrers, until they owned a house and had lots of saving in the bank They had 2 dc when they were ready the dc are both special needs. Their father couldn't handle the stress and had to leave his pratice, insurance dropped the kids and they can't get anyone to insure them, they are about to lose their house from not being able to pay medical bills. These are 2 laywers. It just shows, it can happen to anyone

Wow...the turn of this thread saddens me. How do you know these people are spending $$$ at a carnival or stealing gift cards or milking the system?
They were trying to use a gift card to buy items, not food stamps. And apparently they were on the phone with the person who gave them the card and were embarrassed when there was no $$ on it and ran out.
Sometimes people just fall on hard times. How do you know this wasn't a couple who had just lost their job or some other such thing? How many people on here have asked for help and received it? The economy right now sux...anything could be happening to them right now. I have friends who just had to do a short sell on their house cuz they were going to lose it. He's been a handyman/home improvement guy for 20 years and business just dropped off. They couldn't pay their mortgage and refinanced in the hopes that business would pick up again, which didn't happen. She went a got a job and he got a job, but they just couldn't make the payments. They aren't milking the system, but they fell on hard times. They aren't bad people and have always paid their bills with some $$$ in savings and it all kind of ran out on them.
I would have been with Kelly, instead of judging - I probably would have felt bad that I didn't jump in to help.
ITA-everyone is so quick to judge on here. Just like the post about the government helping out people at risk of foreclosure. EVERYONE falls upon hard times. Many Americans are 2 paychecks away from not being able to pay their rent or mortgage. I think everyone should try to be a bit more of a humanist than a hardazz and think the worst of people.

This thread makes me so sad and concerned about our society - and perceptions.
I think we forget sometimes that as humans we are all much more alike then we are different.
It seems that a lot of people (in society) look down upon the poor, or think they are better than them. We forget sometimes that we can BE those peole - easily. They are just like you - but with less money. They have the same stresses, feelings, dreams.
There is so much nitpicking about cell phones, cars, clothes - whatever....so many assumptions made on someone ELSEs observations - not even your own. Its so sad.
I think we need to see the good in people, open our hearts (and yes, sometimes our wallets) to help people - to relate to people and to know we are ALL the same people (yes, even those taking advantage of the system...its sad...but sometimes survival is primative!).
I am sure a lot of us would be a lot more empathetic if we went through hard times ourselves. We would know what it feels like to have to make hard decisions about which bills to pay and who to feed first.
Regardless as to what their situation was I have compassion for them and an open heart - I hope things work out for them and they or their child never goes hungry.
We are not speaking about "poor" people though who could use a little help. We are speaking of people who use the system and people to live. I have seen it over and over and it happens more than you think.
That is not how I read this thread up to the point where I posted. It turned into a convo about people that abuse the system and about people who assume others are using the system - but that was not was I was responding to.

Re: saw something the other days that is still bothering me
Just wanted to add there are always recurring themes on here:
1. MY MONEY shouldn't pay for this one to : drink, smoke, have kids, etc.
Then your issue is with the government-write your congressman
2. You shouldn't have kids if you are not totally financially stable
There are people who never are. fertility lasts so long. You do the math
3. I know person a, b and c who rip off the system so that must be everyone
I have no answer to this as that is just generalization
