Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
I had NO IDEA that people buy presents on Easter.
Is this another thing my kid will be teased about in school "your mama's so cheap she can't afford an Easter basket"?
I thought easter was 1) God and 2) choco bunnies and hard boiled eggs
*this is not an "I can't believe how materialistc blah blah blah" more like a "holy crap this is so new to me" blah blah blah.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
I don't think we're even doing an Easter basket (yet).
I never got a "gift" from the Easter bunny and don't plan on making it a tradition for Ann. I didn't really know people did it either.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
Growing up, we always got Easter baskets. My parents were mean and hid both eggs AND the baskets, so we had to search for them before we could eat chocolate bunnies for breakfast. No gifts though....just lots of candy.
That's the same thing we're doing for Lily and any future children we might have...

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
I just asked the same thing the other day. We dont do gifts but more like goodies....since I dont want him to have a basket full of candy. He gets like sidewalk chalk, bubbles, a matchbox car, little things that fit in a basket.
My parents went ALL out, it was like mini Christmas, when we were kids.

SAME thing in my house growing up. I just got their baskets today and we'll color eggs on Friday.

And I also made a promise to myself that if we ever start to hide Lily's basket....the hiding spot will NEVER be in the trunk of our car!!! It rained that Easter!

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
It's not really a gift giving holiday for us. My parents hid eggs and gave us easter baskets that had small items (cassette tapes or books) and chocolate/sweets. DS is only a year and getting an easter basket with a small stuffed lamb, a book, and bubbles.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
I never got big gifts. I bought Ryan a few items - probably totally $20. I don't do a huge gift wrapped present - esp. since A) he just had a bday B) we do not need more toys and C) I won't be able to afford that every year with more than 1 kid

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
The biggest present ever given on Easter when I was growing up was a stuffed animal. We did colored eggs, a hunt for said eggs, and got a basket filled with candy. I realize today as a society we are more health conscious, so some parents do bubbles, sidewalk chalk etc, but to me, those are presents, just the smaller variety (like you would put in a Christmas stocking) and for ME PERSONALLY I will not be doing that.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
It's up to you.
The Easter Bunny comes to our home and leaves each boy a basket with toys and candy. That's how it was for me growing up and that's what DH and I agreed to do for our children.
But that will fade with time as the boys get older...what will remain... dinner with the family...never ending dishes of food...lots of laughter and nonna stuffing a $20 in their pockets to "get a little something nice"

Not to me, bc it made me think back to one time when I got blank ones in my stocking so I could record songs off the radio.

I fig I am doing the same thing...bec I want to give a basket but I dont think they are old enough to get a lot of candy just yet.. so I figured as they get older, I will replace the little tiny toys/books with candy...so for now more goodie toys and less candy and in a number of years it will be the opposite!

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
My mother always did a gift and an Easter basket when I was a kid. This is the first year I'm doing an Easter basket for DD, but she's gotten a gift from my mom every year of her life to date. Last year it was crayons and markers (and crayons DO mark pretty silk Easter dresses in case you were wondering... this year she's wearing something machine washable)
I don't expect that any kid will get teased about getting or not getting an Easter gift, because I never went to school and said "look at what the Easter bunny gave me!!"
ETA: My mother also had a thing against candy, so maybe that's why I got a gift instead. I got candy too, but not so much. And I inherited the same attitude about candy. Luckily for my DD, DH and I disagree on that or she probably wouldn't have had ANY candy to date.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
When the boys are older i'll do a candy only basket for them but since they're so young I put small gifts. Nothing expensive though...everything going in Rylans basket is stuff I would have just given him for his bday yesterday.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
in my family we only did chocolate and an egg hunt. but DH's family does gifts, candy, the works! so he wants to do that with DS. im not for it or against. i could really care less either way. he'll get a basket no matter what but i already told DH we're not going nuts. so hes getting some clothes (which are really gifts for mommy ), a blues clues plushy, and a new baby einstein book.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
Growing up, my siblings and I would dye eggs on Good Friday and have an easter egg and basket hunt on Easter morning. I am continuing this tradition with my kids. The baskets were basically full of a chocolate bunny, small toys (similar to stocking stuffers), and plastic eggs with $1 bills or stickers in them.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
We never did gifts as a kid. It was a holy day.. went to church & had family dinner. My grandmother used to get us chocolate bunnies with the candy eyes.
One year, I think we painted eggs.
I'd like to paint eggs every year with my DC & give them chocolate bunnies also but they don't need presents.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
I wasn't allowed to believe in the Easter bunny, my mom said there was nothing religious about rabbits that lay eggs , but we did get a basket with some treats in it in the morning before mass, and did egg hunts. I am following the same tradition with DS.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
Growing up I always received presents for Easter!
The night before we'd color eggs and then hide carrots. The next morning we woke up to our basket on the kitvchen table (with bunny prints all over). Then we'd go and look where in the spot where we hid our carrots. The carrot would be gone and in its place a plastic egg filled with a clue which sent us on a hunt. Each clue led us to a present. We always had quite a few presents! It was a tradition that I always looked foward to and one that I will continue with my son!
