And I also made a promise to myself that if we ever start to hide Lily's basket....the hiding spot will NEVER be in the trunk of our car!!! It rained that Easter!
last year we hid the easter eggs we painted the night before outside in our backyard and left on note on the table "from" the Easter Bunny to our nieces in the spot where we left the eggs the night before.
they went NUTS looking for those things. it was so much fun...so yeah, no torture but there WILL be a scavenger hunt
though rain on pretty easter dresses BLOWS

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
Yes, it was new to me as well. My MIL started talking about getting DD presents a couple of months before her 1st Easter. I was VERY uncomfortable with this (esp. I guess because they never even go to church--not even on Easter WARNING: MY VIEWPOINT ONLY! It's also an IL thing with me. ) and wanted to tell her no. My DH dissuaded me. In addition to the baskets, she gives the grandkids small toys, clothes, bathing suits, beach stuff, etc. like that...
For me, I've only done candy and this year I'm getting them a childrens' bible.
It seems people like do what was done for them as kids.

easter was always a basket of candy and a few trinkets.
That's what DD will get when she is old enough to have candy :)

I had NO IDEA that people buy presents on Easter.
Is this another thing my kid will be teased about in school "your mama's so cheap she can't afford an Easter basket"?
I thought easter was 1) God and 2) choco bunnies and hard boiled eggs
*this is not an "I can't believe how materialistc blah blah blah" more like a "holy crap this is so new to me" blah blah blah. I'm with you, I had no idea either , I'm glad I'm not alone, lol. We don't do gifts on Easter where I come from .... DD is not getting anything, just boiled , colored eggs (preferably red )

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
I always got a basket and usually some small-ish gifts.
My grandma would also give chocolate and sometimes a toy. One year it was the Peaches and Cream Barbie
My kids will get baskets and some kind of gifts from both Grandmas. My aunt already gave them gifts, too.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
We got toys.
I think my parents used Easter as like a midway point for a gift that we reaaalllly wanted. We didn't get random toys during the year and our birthdays (my sister and I) are in September and November and then Christmas.
I think we will probably do a toy and a basket. He is getting small toys and a basket from us this year, and we are going to look for eggs, but not dye any this year b/c he is reaaalllly bad at finding stuff
My mother has lost her mind and bought 8,475 toys, books and DVDs for my kid this year

Just baskets but, there was usually a chocolate bunny for me at my Aunt Anna's and my grandma's.
Since Liam is too little for candy.. I know some of the grandparents got little gifts.. (he has 3 sets of grandparents! but, two are long distance.. so they send gifts for everything)

Am I showing my age?
Not to me, bc it made me think back to one time when I got blank ones in my stocking so I could record songs off the radio.
Ahhh.... the good old days- when songs were cut off by commericals about cola

Growing up, we always got Easter baskets. My parents were mean and hid both eggs AND the baskets, so we had to search for them before we could eat chocolate bunnies for breakfast. No gifts though....just lots of candy.
That's the same thing we're doing for Lily and any future children we might have...
Exactly how it was done in our family too! I remember coming down the stairs and seeing my basket hanging from the ceiling fan! LOL
Since DD is little, she'll get a book or something...DS is not a candy eater, so, he'll get cookies, goldfish, and pretzels..his fave snacks!

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
Honestly I'm not a fan of huge gifts like it is a birthday or Christmas. To me it is more about church and family time- I do enjoy the bunny and the hiding eggs if for no other reason then DDs are young now and I know very soon they won't believe in the easter bunny anymore so I would like them to enjoy it before that gets taken away.
I do get a couple small toys/gifts that fit in a basket b.c honestly I am not a candy fan for 10 month old OR a high spirited 2 almost 3 year old so it replaces a bunny and some other candy. I got DD#1 some bubbles, a puzzle, 2 books, and crayons. We will hide some eggs. DD#2 is getting a very small toy, a book and a stuffed bunny I gave DD#1 for easter her 1st year that has been put away only so she has something.
Growing up easter for us - was an egg hunt, Church, family meal - I would get a small basket with a small bunny, a book or two and maybe a small doll. It wasn't as much about the gifts as the religious aspect and the family time.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
Growing up we got baskets filled with candy and toys that got thrown out in a month. For my DD, I get a small amount of candy and a small toy or something. This year she got a chocolate bunny, skittles, a dvd, pom poms from the dollar spot, and a hamster zuzu pet. I don't want her having much candy. I know that is alittl much but instead of the junk i end up throwing out, I got something she wanted. We color eggs the night before and the easter bunny hides them and fills her basket in the morning.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
We plan to give DD an Easter Basket each year with mostly some goodies- chocolate, candies etc (this year it's teething buiscuits lol) and some other small goodies- bubbles, tiny stuffed chick that makes noise, a small teething ring and of course we bought her an Easter Dress & Shoes. DH and I still get each other baskets- I know mine is FILLED with chocolate since I gave that up for lent. Other than that, we go to church Friday and Sunday and will have an Egg Hunt at my Aunt's house for Sunday Easter Dinner.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
Growing up the easter bunny came to our house and brought us easter baskets (filled with little toys and lottts of candy) I am going to pass this tradition on to our son as well not so much with candy but some little goodies although I did put a small chocolate bunny in his basket ~ wanted to see what he would do with it or if he would like it ~ I am going to hide easter eggs with some M&M's and some with change (our ds loves to put change in his Crayola bank) ~ it is a religious holiday to us & really about spending time together as a family.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
Not really a gift giving holiday here. My mom always did easter baskets with just candy and maybe a book or something. We colored eggs and my mom and dad hid them.
We didn't color easter eggs last year and I doubt we will this year. I did get those plastic eggs to hide and some stickers and stuff. My mom still makes us all baskets even my DH and I get them. For this reason, I didn't make a basket this year or last. DD doesn't need more candy and there is only so much of the other junk I want in the house.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
It was never really a gift giving holiday in my family. We always decorated eggs with my mom and got Easter baskets the morning of. After chuch, we would have an Easter egg hunt. The baskets were always filled with chocolates and a couple of trinkets.
I plan to do the same with DD. Even though she will only be 5 1/2 months this Easter, I did make her a small basket. I threw in a few books, a pair of bunny ears, and some chocolates for mommy and daddy of course (because I just couldn't imagine an Easter basket without chocolates ).

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
I had absolutely no idea who the Easter bunny was me and my cousins AND brother and sister got ONE giant Perugina egg. I was the baby so I got the toy inside AND I got to break it open
For my nieces and nephews I get little bags of candy. I don't want Baby I to know the Easter Bunny, but it will be hard since there are so many cousins in my family. . . it is just such a holy time, I hate the whole bunny part of it.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
We never got gifts as kids...chocolate and peeps in a basket (and my mom STILL does baskets for us!) We never got gifts or toys so that concept is pretty new to me too. However, since DD is too small for candy and I wanted to do a basket, I got her a board book, a little stuffed Peter Rabbit, a 1st easter bib and a windup Peep toy...might throw some Puffs or something in there. nothing too over the top.
