I get presents when I sneeze. Literally. My family is out of control, so yes, Easter is a gift giving holiday for us.

I give summer gifts...towel, crocs, pool toys...
we got little presents, i still do...my mother will send me a basket with lotion and things.

i have this boy who i swear can go in toys r us and not ask for a single thing. he justs wants to see something...never asks to take anything home...we don't do that. he only gets things on holidays.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?

As kids, we got an Easter basket filled with candy, maybe a few dollars/gift/additional candy from the grandparents/aunts/uncles.

My DD will get a basket with a few books/toys (she's too young for candy now). Although, I know the grandparents and my sister (her aunt) have gone crazy, as they always do. She's the first and she's spoiled!

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?

as a kid me always got a little something other than candy in our basket. I continued that tradition with my son. This year his basket has bubbles, a kite, sidewalk chalk, cars ball, and other fun stuff. Nothing big.

My parents and inlaws, however, have upped the ante. Easter is just a step down from Christmas. I personally think it is unecessary but I can't stop their generosity.

ETA: my MIL stills hides the easter baskets. I think it is more fun for her. Because basically there are 5 possible spots and yours is hopefully in a different spot than last year.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?

i was thinking this yesterday when i saw all the sunday flyers advertising all these toys and gifts for easter. I was lucky if i got a basket at easter time when i was a kid. My parents werent big on that stuff. My MIL however, still buys easter baskets for DH and SIL. well this year, im sure it will just be for Jack. but still..

it was never about gifts in my family.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?

As a kid we'd get easter baskets with a little some sort of gift inside with the candy. Maybe a book or small toy or something.

We will probably do the same for DS.

baskets which includes:
hair stuff
cosmetic earrings
sidewalk chalk
bubbles
peeps
chocolate bunny

Also for all 4 girls I am also getting Alvin & the Chipmunks DVD

We hide easter eggs all throughout the house and outside if it's nice.

I spend less than $75 on my 4 girls and my nephew.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?

I must be mean because I don't even think we will do baskets....They have no idea and they don't eat candy. I guess I can put puffs or letter of the day cookies but they get those anyway. We are not churchgoers so we wouldn't be doing that. Maybe I'll do some fingerpaints, puzzles, bubbles-tthings they haven't really used before?

No, not really. I never got gifts growing up. My son was allergic to almost all candy for the longest time, so I ended up giving him a basket with a few small gifts. Now I just do it because I would rather him not have that much candy.

When I was young, I always got baskets from everyone. Ususaly the premade kind.

For my nieces and nephews, I make little baskets. I have 7 now Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
BUT-this year I didn't really go all out-I went to Christmas Tree shops and got a few cute things, and eveyrone got an easter bunny each.
I also used beach pails instead of baskets.

For the babies-I got them an outfit from Carters and a bunny.

We always do Easter baskets with candy, a chocolate bunny and whatever toys can fit in the basket-we do not do big presents and we do not do wrapped presents. We do church too.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?

I tend to turn everything into a gift giving event....Either due to my boredom, need to plan something or shopaholic tendancies...who knows which.

I try to limit myself, but anything I give as a gift, I would have given anyway usually.

I make productions out of holidays...

Noah got a Pot filled with little toys from the lephrechaun on St. Patricks Day for goodness sakes...I have issues I know.

I'm hoping to curb it a little before any of the kids are old enough to remember...

For this Easter I got him a basket and things that will help ME...A game he can play independantly, some pre school workbooks he loves, a DVD, and some little dollarstore type gifts.

i like to celebrate things BIG and I'm a bit warped and think this always involves gifts ( thanks Mom and Dad for that!) ...But we always celebrate the true meaning as well.

I think to each his own....and if you want to give gifts, give gifts, if you want to have things like Easter remain more relgious...so be it. Once again..to each their own.

As a kid we always got a basket with candy and one little present.

For DS, so far I'd rather him not have a basket of candy so I got a bunch of little toys. I didnt go too crazy last year or year before but we spend Easter morning at my BILs and their 4 kids got all sorts of presents so I felt I had to do a little more this year so DS wouldnt feel bad Chat Icon

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?

My mom always went all out for my sister and me. We got candy and a bunch of presents for Easter. I plan on carrying that tradition over for my own daughter. This year since she will only be 7.5 months old, she is getting a book, puffs, biter biscuits and a stuffed bunny.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?

I use a lot of excuses to buy stuff for my kids.Chat Icon

I grew up in a home where I had giant easter baskets filled with all manner of candy. I don't like giving candy to my kids.. so I try to go light on the candy and instead fill their baskets with little goodies.. mostly cheap stuff from the dollar store - but some other nicer stuff. Last year they each got a nerf gun, the year before they got a lot of art supplies.. this year they are getting gardening supplies.

The thing for me is that I don't buy them anything like that UNLESS it is a holiday or a birthday so I don't feel bad for going a little overboard when the opportunity arises.Chat Icon

ETA: I wanted to say that I don't think the gifts necessarily take away from the sanctity of the holiday. Lent is a time of mourning and introspection. My kids get that - we make sure of it. Easter is a celebration of rebirth and life. I think the baskets and presents are effective in showing celebration for little folks. They should not REPLACE the idea that this is the day that He was risen.. but that fact IS reason for the celebration.

I had NO IDEA that people buy presents on Easter.

Is this another thing my kid will be teased about in school "your mama's so cheap she can't afford an Easter basket"?

I thought easter was 1) God and 2) choco bunnies and hard boiled eggs

*this is not an "I can't believe how materialistc blah blah blah" more like a "holy crap this is so new to me" blah blah blah. Chat Icon

i agree.
i wont be doing easter baskets. its not something that i was brought up with.
just me
but we were raised Polish, and no such thing as an easter bunny.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?

Honestly, Easter is NOT a gift giving holiday but imo "the Easter Basket" has become a tradition for kiddies. Although, it is your choice whether you fill your basket with eggs and choco bunnies or small gifts or don't even do one at all!

I grew up in a household that went a little "nuts" with the gifts on Easter...and as a devote Christian, I will stick with the tradition but make sure my son knows what the holiday is really about. I honestly didn't:(

Whatever you choose to do will be fine and I really don't think your little man will be teased if you decide not to do a basket! Hey,some people don't even celebrate the holiday!

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?

My mother is a little over the top with presents - so Easter was a gift giving holiday (and still is).

It used to be small little things and candy but, I was an overweight kid so she cut back on the candy and got me more gifts.

I'm interested to see how large DS' easter pail from Grammy is going to be.

So far, I've gotten him a cute soft basket and a bib that says "My First Easter". I think I am going to go and buy him a pack of bibs and some binkies and maybe some more bottles for this year. He's got plenty of little toys right now and he's not interested in any of them really!
