Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
Posted by rojerono ETA: I wanted to say that I don't think the gifts necessarily take away from the sanctity of the holiday. Lent is a time of mourning and introspection. My kids get that - we make sure of it. Easter is a celebration of rebirth and life. I think the baskets and presents are effective in showing celebration for little folks. They should not REPLACE the idea that this is the day that He was risen.. but that fact IS reason for the celebration.
I think this is a nice way to look at it. The Easter bunny creeps me out though, so if I DO end up doing little baskets, they will be from US and not him LOL

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
We painted eggs on Friday.. and had to find them on Easter morning, along with our Easter basket filled with candy & a chocolate bunny.
I don't buy those "pre-made" baskets for Aidan.. I always did the same thing my parents did.. Except, instead of so much candy.. I would stick a small present, like a dvd in the basket..
I also paint pink bunny prints on the floor mapping the Easter bunnies path through the house... He always got such a kick out of that!

Yeah.. my kids haven't really believed in the Easter Bunny for a long while. It became kind of unbelievable and a little scary that a giant rabbit snuck into our house to hide eggs and presents.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
For our house, it was always just an Easter basket...filled with chocolate, candy and some other little "trinkets" (just so it wasn't ALL candy).
For DD, last year and this year, I do a basket with a little bit of candy and mostly little toys/trinkets because I don't want her to have that much candy. Likely as she gets older, there will be fewer presents and more candy...

I haven't made a big deal about the Easter bunny this year since DD was absolutely freaked out at the idea of Santa Claus coming in her house when she was asleep!!! I had to tell her that I'd have Santa give Mommy and Daddy the presents and we'd put them under the treee....I figure if she's a bit undone over a fat guy in a red suit, there's no way a 6 foot bunny with eggs and candy was going to fly!!

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
Every Easter my sister and I would get Easter Baskets.... they were filled with candy, stuffed animal, chocolate bunny and little easter themed toys (like those bendable bunnies). We never received a wrapped gift or anything like that. For DD, each year she gets an Easter basket... I fill it with candy, a stuffed animal, bubbles, tiny toys, Easter themed book, and this year she will be getting the Toy Story DVD in it also. My inlaws always buy her some sort of present, such as a large stuffed easter toy or some sort of easter keepsake... like last year was a bunny backpack and Annalee Duck. Some years, my MIL and DH's aunt will make Easter Bread or Easter Meat Pie and they give it out as "presents". We always get our nephew a little something... easter themed book, a little candy... something along those lines. They do the same for DD. Each year there are about 25 of us that go out to Easter Dinner, and DD receives presents (again, stuffed easter toys etc.) We also exchange either small plants, small chocolate bunnies, etc.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
I have to say I was a little when I saw the response count and I am SO HAPPY that no one seemed to take this the wrong way (or in another direction).
I was always the "poor" kid and did get made fun of so it's kind of a "thing" with me, but I REALLY don't like spending money on things that won't be used a lot...so this will be my constant struggle.
but reading your stories and traditions has shed new light for me and given me new ideas/inspiration and I thank you for that.
I have to say I never thought about whether or not Luce will get to eat candy....so it makes sense to NOT give jelly beans if the kid can't eat them.
thanks again!

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
I grew up on chocolate, jelly beans, peeps, and a small toy. Coloring eggs and an egg hunt.
Oh yeah....and Sunday morning church.
My IL's bought DD a ton of stuff for the past 2 Easter's. I am not going that crazy. My parents get her a stuffed animal. Although this year they are getting her sheets for her bedroom, since she has soooooo many toys and stuffed animals. Oddly, DD will love it.
This is DD's 3rd Easter and I will be putting a few books and a small toy in her Easter basket, with chocolate and peeps. Coloring eggs too.

Re: Seriously, is Easter a gift giving holiday?
It's not a gift giving holiday in my eyes, but as kids my sister and I always got a basket with candy and a small toy or stuffed animal (Easter related - like a bunny or a lamb). I looked forward to it so I will probably do the same, but definitely not go overboard.
