Skin discoloration question...help please
Last month DH brought Lucas for his check up with the pediatrician and I asked him to discuss two areas on Lucas' legs (one spot on each leg) where there is patch of skin that is lighter...the shape of a circle or oval. No rash, no rough feel to them...smooth but a lighter color.
The doctor looked and said it was eczema and to put cortisone on it...but...
all of my research on eczema doesn't match up with what Lucas has....so now I am a little upset. I just want to make sure he's okay...
so....
1 - does anyone know what I am talking about or have any experience
2 - is there such thing as a pediatric dermatologist - if not do you think I should take him to a regular derm?

I don't know about what you're talking about, but there are pediatric dermatologists. DS saw one for his facial birthmark. Many girls on here gave great recommendations!

I took my dd to a dermatologist in massapequa, it was a reg. dermatologist that also specialized in babies and children. My dd has excema, but its not a lighter color, its the same color as rest of skin, when it flares up sometimes it will get pinkish and its bumpie.

Re: Skin dicoloration question...help please
Was there ever rough skin in those spots that maybe you didn't notice? I'm asking because I have excema and once the redness, etc. goes away, I'm left with a smooth discolored spot much lighter than the skin around it.

I would definitely call a pediatric dermatologist, and get it figured out.

Re: Skin dicoloration question...help please
Well Ang...I can tell you that I have some pigment loss in some places....there is a spot on the back of my calf...about the size of a 1/2 dollar and it's lighter than my skin color. Also...on my side I have a patch that is much darker than my normal skin...so where I wouldn't tell you *not* to worry about it...all I can say is that coming from someone who's got pigment discoloration...it's nothing....it's just pigment displacement of the skin. It's not rough, dry, icthy, or anything like that....it's just like normal skin, just missing color (if that made ANY sense)
If you want, I'll take pics and send them to you so you can see what I mean
ETA : it does NOT hurt to call a pediatric derm We had to take Bella to one and I know he's got an office more middle island...I'll check for you. I liked him a lot.

This is exactly what happened to Ayla.

Re: Skin dicoloration question...help please
I called the ped and they gave me the number for a pediatric dermatologist but they can't see us for another month...I don't want to wait. So we are going to the pediatrician on Saturday. I need him to explain to my why he thinks it's eczema and why Lucas got another spot where his sock covers (so no exposure to sun).
He never gets a red rash in the areas where the skin is lighter...he gets a bath every night and I check him..that's how I found the new spot yesterday.
I feel like my concern was ignored a month ago but at the same time I don't have a medical degree and I know the internet has too much info. I hate waiting.

Nope...never any redness, roughness and we have rubbed the area - causes him no discomfort.

DS gets excema in circles. It is never raised or uncomfortable. Sometimes it is the same color as his skin and sometimes it is red.

Re: Skin discoloration question...help please
I took the twins to a pediatric derm when they had Moluscum. I forget his name but he's on Vets Highway in Commack. I can get his name from an EOB if you need it..so let me know.
He's too young for Vitiligo so dont think it's that. Im sure it's just some type of benign depigmintation.

This is exactly what I thought and started crying.
Now I am trying to find the words to make sure the doctor takes me seriously and respects my craziness over this...it's my son...everything about him is emotional for me.

Just dont read to much online. It will scare the bejesus out of you.
Im sure it's all fine....and just a depigmintation with no underlying cause.

Re: Skin discoloration question...help please
it could be a fungus. i have gotten it and it's easy to treat. Dr. Krystal is an excellant ped derm and he has an office in smithtown and one out in nassau county. i agree with the pp don't read to much online.. there are hundreds and thousands of skin discoloration reasons... you couldn't figure it out just by looking at pics

Re: Skin discoloration question...help please
My daughter had three hemangiomas and I dealt with a number of dermatologists. While I am not familiar with the skin discoloration spots that you mention, I would definitely go with your gut and make an appointment to see a dermatologist or a pediatric dermatologist. We took Ainsley to see Dr. John Walczyk in Manhasset (516 365-8030) and thought he was excellent. He then referred us to a specialist in Manhattan.
In my experience (specifically with hemangiomas), pediatricians do not have the most up to date knowledge about what they are dealing with and treatment options. Honestly, I know more about hemangiomas than my daughters previous pediatrician. You are his mom and NO ONE knows him better than you do. I would explain that you are concerned because there hasnt been any redness, itching, swelling or discomfort that one would normally associate with a rash/eczema. And there is now more than one.
I'm sure your beautiful son is fine - but I'd go see a dermatologist.

Re: Skin discoloration question...help please
Thank you everyone I had to stop reading last night because it was making me cry.
We couldn't get in with the pediatric derm that our ped gave us the number for - won't see until November - by that point I will have worked myself up beyond return.
So tomorrow we are going to see the ped - although I am having second thoughts about that. I feel like he is going to dismiss me.
Should I cancel with him and just make an appt for whenever with a derm?

I would go to your appointment with peds like you have scheduled, bring info you found and just be persistant with finding out what it is.. dont let him dismiss you.. make sure you leave the appointment comfortable.

Aboslutely not. You won't be happy until you ask questions and you'll drive yourself NUTS if you have to wait til Nov.
Don't allow your PED to belittle or dismiss you.
Go in there with the questions you want answered and don't leave until you are satisfied.

I would DEFINITELY make an appt with the pediatric dermatologist, just to set your mind at ease. Ask if they have a list for cancellations-- if they get a cancellation, maybe they can call and fit you in earlier.
You could see the ped tomorrow, but not sure what he could do for you. But again, if it helps ease your mind a bit, go for it. Maybe there's a way, if he's concerned, that his office could call the ped dermatologist (they recommended this guy, right?) and see about squeezing you in sometime sooner?

Re: Skin discoloration question...help please
Thanks everyone!!!
I cancelled the ped appt. He shrugged it off as eczema and that's not it...so I don't think he understands this...nor my feelings. I am emotional and at times irrational when it comes to my baby...so I need to persue this. Great doctor and I don't mean to imply anything or looking to leave...this was just not the help I was looking for.
I just called Dr. John Walczyk and although he cannot take appts until December, his new doctor coming in will see us in October and the receptionist was very helpful so that made me feel better. She acted like my concern was her concern...I appreciate that.
THANK YOU DEIRDRE!!!!

Did he always have it? I do believe there is form of ringworm or a fungus that shows up as lighter patches.
