sneakers hanging from neighborhood power lines?
What is the significance of this? I looked online and saw different reasons, one of which meant you could buy drugs nearby. Then I read it may be a turf thing.
I have a pair dangling from a line near my house and it looks so trashy to me.

Re: sneakers hanging from neighborhood power lines?
I always wondered what the significance of it was. I assumed it was just a kid thing, like graffiti or smashing mailboxes...interesting. I hate how it looks though.

Re: sneakers hanging from neighborhood power lines?
I always thought it meant a gang member died and they hung those as tribute... Even growing up in Brooklyn, I guess I really dont know.

Re: sneakers hanging from neighborhood power lines?
cause its hard to do and risky to do in the middle of a street.. you are one bad mo-fo if you can pull it off.. bragging rights forever
At least that's how we in ghetto land looked at it. Gangs were everywhere if you look hard enough. Regardless of location. Drugs were huge but not as much as sold to the richer sides of town. If shoes on a line just meant crime per se, then it would literally be a high flying flag. no way it would mean those things.
Its vandalism at its core. Stupid and pointless.

It's such a 70's thing to do! Every time I see it, I feel like it's 1977

Re: sneakers hanging from neighborhood power lines?
I remember when I was in preschool, a mom gave the teachers a pair of her son's old shoes and asked for them to throw it up on the line.... We all walked with our little loops on a rope to go do it.
That was in the 70's in manhattan... In the 60's on the east side....

Re: sneakers hanging from neighborhood power lines?
People used to trow them up on the corners where drugs were sold....so i have heard anyway. I don't think they do it anymore ...i think if there are any up there its just kids being kids now a days.

I thought it meant that someone had passed away. Those were the person's last pair of shoes....

Lol, that's exactly how I feel! We must be of a similar age--I remember being a little kid and seeing this all over my area. I've seen it occasionally here and there through the years and have even seen flat cardboard "sneakers" hanging up there recently!

Re: sneakers hanging from neighborhood power lines?
My dh did it forever. Totally not a drug thing, he said people do it to remember their sneakers. Kicks. Lol. He did it until we moved to our new house. He's from Brooklyn. Maybe it's a city thing.

Re: sneakers hanging from neighborhood power lines?
I remember seing them when I was a kid. Someone told me it was done when a kid got his @$$ kicked they threw his sneakers up there.
I'm more inclined to believe the drug thing or the memorial.

Re: sneakers hanging from neighborhood power lines?
I was always under the impression it had to do with drugs being sold in the neighborhood.

Re: sneakers hanging from neighborhood power lines?
I don't think its just a city thing. I have lived on long island my whole life and have seen them more times that I can remember. Never knew they meant anything more than some idiot kid throwing their shoes up on the wire. There is currently a pair right above the gate of my sons elementary school.....I really hope it doesn't mean there are drugs for sale nearby.
