I don't believe anything about warm water having germies, impurities, anything compared to cold.
It all lives in the same pipes, comes out the same pipes and inevitably is going down the same pipe.
the water for hot water does not "live" in the same pipe as the cold water. it has to go through the hot water heater which has sediment and impurities.
you should always use cold water for cooking and consumption. i worked in restaurants for years and this was rule number 1.
Does that mean when I take a hot shower I am getting covered in impurities?
I don't mean that sarcastically or snarkishly btw---I'm legitimately curious, because the thought of showering in impurities skeeves me out!

So here's what I don't get: what do these impurities actually do? Because if half of the population is boiling hot water, I feel like there would be anecdotal evidence that they were getting sick more often, dying younger, passing more gas, or having more issues with commitment.

Re: So, Do You Boil Water Using Hot or Cold Water?
I know we're totally getting off the original thread here, but....
Hot water will dissolve things more easily than cold water, there is no question about it. With that reasoning, it is not hard to believe that hot water running through a pipe will more easily loosen any sediment or deposits or even the pipe walls themselves, and carry those 'impurities' with it. Now, are those impurities bad enough to kill or harm us? Maybe. Maybe not. But given a choice, would you rather drink water that might be less or more impure?
All that being said, after you boil the water, more than likely anything that was living in it is now probably dead so the whole point is moot!

Why you should not use hot tap water for cooking or drinking, especially with young children.
Boiling water kills bacteria and gets rid of some contaminants but it does NOT get rid of lead or nitrates.

Re: So, Do You Boil Water Using Hot or Cold Water?
Well up until I read this post - I used hot. It definitely boils faster - but I had no idea about the impurities and such that is found in hot water?

I was wondering this too. Isn't the point of boiling the water to kill any bacteria and any other impurities that are in it? So if we use hot water and boil it, it still potentially has lead and such in it? I'm confused! Why doesn't boiling it kill it?

Re: So, Do You Boil Water Using Hot or Cold Water?
I use cold if I am boiling water for tea but if I am boiling it for cooking, I put cold water in my electric tea kettle, wait for it to boil (less than 2 min) and transfer it to the pot. works like a charm!

Boiling kills bacteria and not all impurities are bacteria.

Cold. I read somewhere that hot tap water contains impurities that leach through the hot water tanks.
I heard the same

Cold. I remember learning in science class in high school that hot water is more likely to carry lead in it. That's the "impurities" everyone keeps mentioning. And you can't boil that away.

Re: So, Do You Boil Water Using Hot or Cold Water?
I use cold water. We have one of those quick boil burners so it really doesn't matter. But when we had a gas stove I felt the cold always boiled quicker
