So, for all of you who said McCain is brilliant for choosing Palin...why?
I saw a lot of people say that this is an amazing choice on his behalf and that he is brilliant for this. I'm very curious, not for flaming reasons, but I'm wondering your reasoning.

Re: So, for all of you who said McCain is brilliant for choosing Palin...why?
for one, because she's not the typical "good old boy" the Repubs are known for.
if I was a Republican woman, I would be ecstatic. here's a excerpt from a commentary I read earlier:
John McCain's brilliant but risky "Hail Mary pass" choice for vice president, Alaska Gov. Sarah "Barracuda" Palin, has the political world saying first: Who? And then: Why?
The "who" is a young, articulate, smart, tough, pro-life woman who is the governor of our northernmost state. She is conservative and a mother of five, including a son in the Army who is set to be deployed to Iraq on September 11. Her youngest child has Down syndrome.
The "Barracuda" nickname came from her aggressive basketball play on the state championship basketball team. She is a hunter, pilot and lifetime member of the NRA.
She is blunt, outspoken and charming. And don't assume she can't stand toe-to-toe with Joe Biden. She is a great debater. And she was runner-up for the Miss Alaska title, won Miss Congeniality in that contest and plays the flute.
She also has a compelling story and is a most interesting choice. She will be known by all in 24 to 48 hours in this instant media world, and I am betting she will be well-liked.
The "why" is she is a governor and outside the Beltway. Conservatives love her, and she shares John McCain's value system. She is also known for taking on the establishment and ethics is her forte.
She defeated the longtime senator and Republican governor in a primary and then went on and defeated the former Democratic governor.
I don't believe people vote for vice president but only for president. That said, I think she is every bit as good a choice as Biden. Alaska has three electoral votes, and so does Delaware, so that part ends up being a wash.
I think the potential for her to attract women voters is immense. And I am betting, win or lose or draw, she is a future star of a party in desperate need of young people and women role models.

This is going to be a very historic election either way. Either the first female VP or the first african american Pres.
I do wish he would have picked someone a little more pro-choice though

I guess, but his reputation has been more "middle of the road" as opposed to heavy conservative. It would be nice to see more middle, rather than right or left for a change. I get what you are saying though. Can't have everything I guess.

Re: So, for all of you who said McCain is brilliant for choosing Palin...why?
I think it's really shrewd.
I have to prefeace this. I think there are a lot of people who are educated about politics who are voting for McCain regardless, a lot of educated people voting for Obama regardless. And a lof of educated people in the middle who are still weighing choices and will make the ultimate decision.
But there are a LOT of voters who are A) not that educated about politics and/or B) are more concerned with identity politics than issues who were HRC supporters or undecideds who will switch to McCain because he has a female running mate and they want to see a woman in the White House.
I think McCain is banking on this and disaffected HRC supporters (who I would also but in the A/B category) who will switch to McC to vote for a woman.

part of the strategy that i thought was brilliant was that it came the day after Obama's speech. Thunder stealing at it's best.

the comments i don't get on that thread though were how sneaky (whichever words were used) it was of McCain to do this. I see it no different than Obama choosing Biden, or Hillary trying to get the female vote for him by urging her "sisterhood of the traveling pant-suits" to choose him, either. They're all political strategies, nothing more, nothing less.

IMO, sounds to me like she is right in line with the good ol' boys...only she's missing the necessary appendage.

I agree.
It's all part of politics. It's called strategy not being sneaky or "political".

Re: So, for all of you who said McCain is brilliant for choosing Palin...why?
It's not sneaky, though it is a very political move. So was Obama's pick. They both need to do this, so no surprise there.
But, is she the best choice from his party? Before this, I was thinking I could live with McCain if he won (assuming he would choose someone also moderate), but with this choice, I do not want to see them in the White House.
From what I have heard so far, she is anti-choice, pro gun, and pro captial punishment. How being pro life and pro gun go hand in hand, I don't know. Scary, esp. considering McCain's age and the fact that he may very well not finish his term.
Also, if she was a man, would he ever pick her? No. And he only met her once? How does he know he can actually work with her?

the reason i said it was brilliant is because some of the hillary supporters will not be voting for Obama - this was a shrewd play to win them over to his side.

Well, I call it pro gun. You have a different phrase and outlook. Whatever you call it, it's not appealing IMO.
The second amendment is no longer relevant today, IMO, and opens some very dangerous possibilities. But this is a whole other issue.
You like her, I don't. Let's agree we will not agree.

wont happen, just like the old school male voters will vote for Mccain regardless, they wont vote for Mccain( hillary fans) because ANY hillary fan would NEVER EVER support Palin's politics. She is toooooooo toooo different from her. Maybe some yes, but not enough to sway things in his direction too majorly.

Dont wanna get off topic, but protect them with a gun from what? Another Gun? The only reason I could see needing that type of protection would be from the same thing.
Now if we could eliminate it altogether, we might not need to protect ourselves? Make sense ?
Guns should be for hunting and if needed in Wars. yes they may be needed in todays society for protection, but isisnt that wrong? Isisnt there a part of people who wishes we could change that?
That sjust opinion though and dont wanna get too far off base with the Original post.

So what if she is pro choice a law like that has to be amended by the constitution and it will never happen, it will never pass through the congress. A republican pro- choice is no new news.

That sjust opinion though and dont wanna get too far off base with the Original post. yes, to protect from a gun with another gun.
just 1 example I can think of... remember that poor family in CT that was murdered while the hudband/father watched? what if he had a gun? what if he was able to shoot at them and possibly save his family's life? even if he just scared them away by shooting off his gun, it might have changed the whole situation.
I have heard countless stories on the news about victims fighting back with their personal guns - which mostly likely saved their lives.
there will always be guns available that will fall into the hands of criminals. to think otherwise is not realistic. and thankfully, the 2nd amendment is there so that citizens can protect themselves!
