So my DH has a varicocele.
I am on the verge of divorcing this man. Last year in Feb, he saw a urologist after two bad SA's. When he came out he just said that they recommended a varicocele surgery to improve volume but he doesn't have a varicocele. I found this strange but just agreed with DH when he didn't want surgery and thought they were pushing him into something not necessary.
Fast foward to our DNA frag results and Dr. T recommends him seeing a urologist again bc we have no idea why his numbers are so terrible. He goes back to the urologist and they say he has a moderate varicocele. It was diagnosed last year so basically he wasn't paying attention to the Dr, blew him off and didn't care to have the surgery last year. Now he is upset bc we wasted an entire year in which he could have had the surgery and it takes a few months to see improvements in the sperm. This is a huge indicator why his frag was poor, free radicals were high and why our fertilization through ICSI was still a failure.
I'm So upset. I don't know what we should do at this point without him having the surgery. He is trying to get it done asap after this IVF cycle but I'm just worried we will have another failure bc we are working with damaged spermies. What the heck should I do at this point? I already started stims.

Wow, I'm so sorry. I would be pissed too. Especially after all the time, energy, money you have invested so far and onto your second Ivf. Can you maybe do an iui for this one and wait it out until he gets the surgery and then a few more months to give yourself the best shot at an Ivf?

I'm sorry. That is so frustrating. What does your RE suggest for this cycle?

I was thinking this. Maybe an IUI this cycle.

So my DH has a varicocele.
So sorry to hear this. I would be incredibly upset and frustrated if I was in your position. Not to bash husbands around the world, but men suck at doctors appointments and it is for that reason that I go with DH to all his appointments relating to urology/reproduction/endocrinology and go into the room with him. He just doesn't listen to what the doctors says -- looks at them, nods his head, says "yeah" a couple of times and then when I ask him about it, the response I get -- "the doctor didn't really say anything". We recently were in the waiting room and he was filling out new patient paperwork, and said to me "I'm the primary insurance carrier, right?". I calmly told him I was, but in my head I was thinking, "NO YOU IDIOT! We get our health insurance through me and my job. Do you see $$ deducted from your paychecks for medical?!?!". This alone confirmed why I go into the room with him.

So my DH has a varicocele.
Do a bunch of research on the surgeon performing the varicocele surgery - get reviews from the ladies on here - I am not on LI. My DH had a horrible recovery from the surgery. They said he would be able to resume normal activity in one week...no such luck. I would say he was not feeling 100% for 8-10 weeks after the surgery.
You will most likely want him to get the surgery as soon as possible. It can take 3-6+ months to see any results. It is also possible that it will not improve his sperm, which unfortunately was the case for my DH - but our MFI was due to chemotherapy.

I hear you! The urologist is through LIJ and is pretty well known for the micro ligation surgery so DH is pretty confident in him. Hoping to get the surgery asap. Will speak with my RE about his viewpoint on it all. I'm just happy we have an answer as to why his samples are always so terrible. He's a very healthy person so we were so confused by it all.

how did they diagnose this? Just wondering since my DH tends to have morphology on the lower side.

Uhhh I'm so sorry about this. Men just don't get what we are going through. I would see what Dr. T suggests and go from there. How many days have you been stimming for? I'm going in tomorrow at 4:30.

The urologist does a sonogram and checks for unusual growth of blood vessels.

Yes, they do a sono and physical exam. DH has a moderate varicocele so it was palpable during the physical exam lol

Our morph was bad so Dr. T suggested the DNA frag test and that showed abnormal results most likely causing the poor morph. The overall cause of everything is the varicocele though.

Yea, if that was abnormal, they would forward you to a urologist. I guess it can't hurt to see a urologist anyway if you are curious. Our last RE had DH go last year bc of the poor morph and that's how they initially diagnosed him ( without telling me lol)

Interesting. He knows what he is doing. I'm going to be doing 375 Gonal F and 75 Menopur and .55 CC of HGH. I don't do well on low stims. My first IVF I was on 150 of Gonal to start with and I idn't have a good turn out.

True. I asked him for high enough that I would get a good amount of follicles but also not compromise quality. With my first IVF on low stims I only had 5 mature. WIth 2nd IVF on moderate stims 300 Gonal and 150 Menopur I had 14 mature. I also let him know that I'm a slow stimmer. I stimmed for 12 days with both IVFs....crazy.
I can't wait to hear your update tomorrow!

Well my amh is very low and I have 1 tube so it's our best chance still unfortunately. The urologist did say it gives us a huge boost in conceiving naturally though.

So my DH has a varicocele.
Ugh so frustrating. Husbands can be so oblivious at times. FTR my DH had a varicocele for years. He also dismissed it but it did cause most of our fertility issues. He did have varicocele repair surgery after DD was born. The urologist said in some cases it helps in some it doesn't. It really depends on the severity of it. DH had bi-lateral with extremely low counts. The surgery improved the counts somewhat but unfortunately not enough to help us get pregnant and be able to take home a baby. I have gotten pregnant spontaneously since then and even before but it always ends in M/C...so the point of my long drawn out post is that although the surgery does help at times it's not always a guarantee. I think DHs urologist said like 50/50. I know it's super frustrating but I would just try to keep a positive outlook on your current IVF. Hopefully it brings you your take home baby
