So we can't eat cold cuts?

I love cold cuts, but my Dr. said I can't have them.

Maybe just here and there?

Re: So we can't eat cold cuts?

I have steered clear of them until my 3rd trimester...now if I have them I will nuke them in the microwave for 15 seconds to kill any bacteria. PP Is right, everything in moderation.

I completely agree. Plus, I eat tons of turkey. I get a brand that has no nitrite and no added preservatives.

Re: So we can't eat cold cuts?

Lots of people disagree on this topic, I agree with the pp imo everything in moderation and fro a good, clean, reputible place.

Eta: BOTH my OB'S said they were FINE. I trust my Dr's, that's why they are my Dr's. You basically take a risk with anything you ingest because anything can be tainted or have bacteria, sad, but its a fact. There were so many things in the last year alone...tylenol, spinach. You have to do what makes you feel comfortable. Personally, the thought of eating microwaved cold cuts makes me want to throw up.

we had a italian cold cut 3 foot hero for our xmas party it was amazing i just put it in the micro until it was steaming. the office smelled like cheese. lol
I heard if you eat it from a place that moves a lot of meats like a busy deli rather than one that the meat sits there all day .

Re: So we can't eat cold cuts?

The issue is listeria which can be fatal to the baby. It has nothing to with eating it in moderation, you can eat it once and be taking the chance of eating something contaminated.

Best thing to do is if you really want cold cuts is to have them heated up so to kill any bacteria.

even if you get it at a reputible place, you don't know how often they clean the slicers.

I stayed clear of cold cuts when pregnant with DD, and will do the same with this pregnancy.

Re: So we can't eat cold cuts?

It's all about what you feel comfortable with. I do eat cold cuts, but I know plenty of people who did not eat them during their pregnancies.

Also every dr is different as to whether or not they allow them.

Re: So we can't eat cold cuts?

My doc said I can eat the ones that are cooked like Turkey and boiled ham etc. Not the cured or smoked ones like Salami, Prociutto etc because the smoking/curing does not kill the bacteria.

ITA! Listeria can be fatal to the baby, moderation will not help you there. If you heat the cold cuts up til they are steaming that should kill any bacteria.

Re: So we can't eat cold cuts?

agree with the PP-- it's all about eating it one time and being unlucky with listeria. If I eat cold cuts, I zap them in the microwave until steaming hot. Same thing for deli sliced cheese. Won't touch it cold.

Re: So we can't eat cold cuts?

I eat them regularly--mostly because it's a lunch staple to me. I didn't know what else to eat, because those frozen meals are soooooo high in sodium. So, I have a few sandwiches a week.

Re: So we can't eat cold cuts?

What are the risks of a pregnant woman getting listeriosis?

According to the Center of Disease Control (CDC), an estimated 2,500 persons become seriously ill each year in the United States and among these, 500 will die. According to research, pregnant women account for 27% of these cases. CDC claims that pregnant women are 20 times more likely to become infected than non-pregnant healthy adults.

Source-
http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancycomplications/listeria.html

Side note- -the current US population is about 300 million. So 2,500 out of 300 MILLION in my mind is a ridiculously slim chance of getting Listeriosis.

I know some people will say, "why take ANY chance?" and while I can appreciate that mode of thinking, I've been eating cold cuts at least once a week since around 20w which is when I actually took the time to look up more specific info on Listeriosis instead of "just saying no" to cold cuts, lol.

Re: So we can't eat cold cuts?

You can have them if you heat them up. I mean, they say that if you get it from a place you've always gotten them and have never gotten sick before that you should be fine eating them in moderation. Doc's worry about the bacteria that can form on the slicers and if the cold cuts aren't wrapped properly.

Re: So we can't eat cold cuts?

My Dr. basically told me that if I want to be that careful (as in avoiding cold cuts) I might as well not drive too.

Listeria is something ANYONE, pregnant or not, can get. How many people have you heard of getting listeria??

As others have said, everything in moderation.

Its totally a personal comfort level. My doctor said it was fine--I've eaten turkey probably 3 or 4 times in the last 14 weeks. I feel comfortable eating coldcuts, and tuna, cooked sushi and lots of other "don'ts"--others don't feel comfortable.
Totally up to you.

Re: So we can't eat cold cuts?

There was a story not too long ago on this board.

Yes, the chances are slim but if heating the cold cuts 20-30 seconds before eating them can reduce the risk even more than why not?

Re: So we can't eat cold cuts?

My doctor told me she reccomendes Boars head ONLY- esp the Low Sodium because they tend to be "fresher"

Once in a while is NOT going to hurt you...
