Re: So, went to my genetic counseling meeting on tuesday...
I feel the same way as you. We decided even before we conceived that we would not do Amnio or a CVS, especially after everything we went through to get here. We did do the NT scan and while those results were great I am facing the concern that our baby has enlarged kidneys (which is a very soft marker). I truly believe that all these tests now give us far too much information - more than our parents ever knew when we were being born.
I pray every day for a healthy baby and will add you to my intentions. Keep positive and don't stress too much. There really is nothing that can be done until the baby arrives.
As my DH says, there is nothing we need to prepare for if we have a DS baby. Any needs for a newborn are the same, it's when the child gets older that we will need to have any special intervention.
I really will be praying for you.

As for not getting the amnio, my dh and I both decided that although the risks are low, they are still there. If our child does in fact have down syndrome, there is nothing we can do. Why risk problems during pregnancy.
This is exactly how DH and I felt/feel. I know it's so much easier said than done, but please try to stay positive and keep the faith. Many thoughts and prayers are being sent your way

Re: So, went to my genetic counseling meeting on tuesday...
I was against the amnio for myself. I didn't want to risk it. My ultrascreen results gave me a 1 in 99 for Down Syndrome. I decided to do the quad screen at 16 wks thinking that would put my mind at ease a bit - even if it just went from 1 in 99 to somewhere around there. Well, I then had 1 in 19 risk. It took my breathe away to hear that. I thought I could go without amnio b/c I did not plan to terminate, but I found I could barely function thinking about it. It consumed me and I was always on the verge of tears - it wasn't better for me. I went in for my level II and there were no markers but I was told not to take too much comfort in that b/c it is not necessarily common for the sonos to show markes for downs. The perinatoligist gave us the option of doing an amnio right then in there. I was completely unprepared but it was almost better - it was just a decision we decided we would continue to torture ourselves with. I did it and found I have a perfect, chromosomally healthy child - I am SO glad I just did it. But, I know what the struggle is. And it's such a personal decision but just saying, you should take each step as you go and see how you're feeling. Many prayers for you. Take comfort in the fact that this is not uncommon for there to be elevated risks and a perfectly healthy child.

These tests are so often inaccurate that I don't think they should even do them. I wouldn't do the amnio either...it's an unnecessary risk and it really isn't going to change anything. I hope everything goes well for you for the remainder of your pregnancy.
