2.) Haven't we discussed on these boards that maybe that person was financially sound until they fell on bad times? Are they supposed to exchange or turn in their previous lifestyle items upon receiving an EBT card?
I've seen this come up time and time again. Why should they have x,y, z if they need help?
BUt these are the same people who will say that these people should better themselves or work 3, 4, 5 jobs. Yeah, that's great but what is a single mother to do? Leave her kids at home alone? And then she loses them to foster care, where they become a bigger drain on the system. And these same people don't seem to grasp that these "bottom feeders" are doing the jobs that they think they're "too good" for: gas jockeys, retail workers, janitorial, manual labor, warehouses.. the list of minimum wage to low wage jobs that are done is too great to list. But, if these jobs didn't exist, then who would stock store shelves, check you out, pump your gas, mow your lawn, clean the facilities you use etc.
Part of being a successful nation is having people working at ALL kinds of jobs. We NEED those people doing those "menial" jobs (although I bet most of those who think they're above those jobs probably couldn't do them) and if we want low prices, that will translate to low wages for them. And why shouldn't those people be able to have decent access to healthcare, food or shelter?
ITA>
Also, on a related note, the last man I saw at SHopRite with an EBT card .....the poor guy had a belt lined with some basics - milk, lots of canned goods. It's not like he had gourmet goods. He didn't even have a lot of items and when the total came, his EBT didn't even cover all of it.
and I agree with you on what the hell is a mother to do - I also see it on Craiglist - some mom will ask for used baby items for free, you know, like a post asking if anyone is getting rid of items for free --- and some asshole will write, "why do you have a computer??? You should sell it and buy your kid a crib."
It's disgusting and disheartening how people think.

Re: SOCIAL SECURITY TAXES??
There will always be people who abuse the system, here or in any other country you look at. Should you punish the majority for the minority that take advantage? What does that say about our society if we don't take care of our own?
Mrsmick if you want to talk fair how about going after people that don't pay taxes at all....a cash business that is off the books or a wealthy American with tax shelters and money in offshore accounts....is that fair?

Re: SOCIAL SECURITY TAXES??
I don't know why I just read through most of this thread. It is so pointless and depressing. Every thing dissolves into infantile name calling and nastiness! There is truth on both sides. We need entitlements as a safety net when someone falls on hard times. However, in my line of work, I have seen tremendous abuses. It is human nature to take advantage when there are few consequences for doing so. The system itself is flawed too and there is a great deal of waste. I don't have a solution. It is a tough, but snottiness doesn't help. Also, a big problem with LIF is that it is VERY liberal and there aren't enough conservatives to have some balanced debates. One or 2 people end up expressing their republican view points and several dozen others attack them. Just my 2 cents.

I stand by my earlier statement.
NO MORE PUBLIC SCHOOL. Literally EVERYONE who benefits from public school doesn't pay taxes. EVERYONE.
Don't even get me started on the teachers!! They work 10 months a year!!! And get out at 3:00!! Lazy teachers!!

Re: SOCIAL SECURITY TAXES??
The fact is this country is getting more liberal. Obama won the election decisively. The country WANTS these changes. Better healthcare, gay marriage, immigration reform, gun control and a real plan to stop climate change. This isn't bull. If the country wanted to support the Republican agenda they would have voted for Mitt Romney.

Let it be said that there have been civil political discussion in the past on LIF. Not all political discussions go the way they have been recently. A few bad eggs ruin everything!

I think for a lot of people social change is scary. This country is changing very fast. The status quo isn't working. We are not and will not be the same country we were 20, 50, 100 years ago and THANK GOD for it.

I think part of the problem lately is that certain posters can't handle it when it is pointed out that what they are spouting as gospel is not even remotely true. They then resort to name calling and insulting the masses.
I use Factcheck.org to verify my info when I can, because BOTH sides warp info to suit their needs. I am very middle of the road on politics, I have voted Republican many, many, many times. Almost as much as I vote Democrat. And I actually can see both sides of the argument, even when I do disagree.
This I do know to be FACT: Politicians will skew the truth to suit their agenda, as will the media outlets which support them.

Yes I am a democrat but I can see some good points in the republican agenda. However I think they really need to update their stances on the social issues, in order to be in line with what Americans really want.
What it comes down to for me, is that I am willing to pay a bit more in taxes so those that need help get it. And also, so there is a chance women and the LBGT can have equal rights.

Seriously.
Or, you know, buy muzzles for certain party members. Like Sarah Palin and Todd Akin. Just forbid them for speaking, and should they speak and the inevitable happens, DISASSOCIATE from them!!!!!!!!!!!

Um, the Bush tax cuts actually included the SS tax as well.
This board is majority Democratic. Obviously the facts are out there and you guys are going to defend Obama until you are all blue in the face. And that's fine. The guy already lied today by saying he promises to uphold the constitution. ********. But keep on defending him! Taxes continue to skyrocket even more and healthcare tax is in there too.... See your car insurance rates going up? Yea, that's the Obamacare pricetag. These companies have to pay for their employers healthcare and guess who pays for it? People that voted for Obama voted for this. Bottom line. Go ahead and roll your eyes and post snarky comments. I see it like it is. And Republicans DID push for an extension. It just wasn't happening with the debt that OBAMA keeps on raising. What a classact he is!
People like you is why i hate politics.
Obama can hand out his own money to everyone in America (if he was that rich) and you would still find a reason to bittch about him and hate him.
We get it you hate him and you blame him for losing your job and getting another one where you make less and blah blah ... of course it had nothing to do with anything YOU might have done though.
How about you get over the fact that he won and move on. Nothing is going to chagne that.
You want to see real change, how about you get up and do something about it. Maybe be more worried about who you elect to congress cause to me it seems they have most of the power.
And again FWIW i am neither for nor against Obama

I'll bite.
To be honest and blunt: I am a card carrying liberal who is well versed in most of these issues and I agree with almost zero items on the Republican agenda - especially recently.
However, with the things I read, LIF, and my students (I teach high school government) I am often surrounded by political debate, and I am ALWAYS open to the other side. I will, on admittedly rare occasion, alter or soften my stances. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen.
Very few things in life are black and white. I try to teach my students to find that delicate balance of being able to see and even analyze the shades of grey while still forming an opinion they can stand firm on.
Unfortunately, I find that on LIF, the Republican viewpoint is too often represented by a cascade of rambling and blatant untruths.
I would sincerely enjoy reading an account of the Republican agenda that contains actual facts and refrains from using references to communism, socialism, Obama's birth certificate, or any of the other smoke screens that are erected to divert attention from the real issues.
I'm not saying it's never been presented. I vaguely remember some intelligent debates on the health care act. Besides, I don't read every post.
However, much of the time it sounds like the Republican viewpoint tumbles out like diarrhea of the mouth. Unfortunately, diarrhea is what happens when you're full of shit.
