You know this turned into a whole argument you and republican this and you liberal that because some people would't accept the FACTS about the payroll tax cut and the Bush tax cuts not being the same thing. So instead of resolving that one issue of FACT. Verifiable, easy to google, fact, it turned into a pizzing match.
If that's not a symbol of WTF is wrong in our political system I don't know what is. The facts don't go your way so you start fighting and name calling.
I am SO F----ing sick of people who are willfully ignorant on this tax issue. It's so ridiculous. Even if you don't want to believe what it written in the NyTimes or the Fox News website or whatever you can actually read the bills and the laws that gave us the payroll tax holiday as well as the Bush tax cuts and their multiple extensions.
I'm frightened in this country, in the media on TV and also just in what gets passed around on various blogs and "news" sites and facebook, that verifiable fact is no longer part of the discussion. It's all fear and speculation and completely twisting or subverting the facts to make your point. It's disgusting

Exactly, the professionals (i.e doctors) that take advantage of both these "bottom feeders" and the system that are a much bigger problem.

I am first generation American. Daughter of Italian and Cuban immigrants. I would never insult people who come here to seek a better life. Bottom feeders are people who keep having kids to claim more welfare. I work with a girl who is 27 years old and has FOUR kids and gets a portion of section 8. She brags that she has a bigger apartment than some because she gets federal aid. She buys 10 dollar lunches everyday and gets eyelash extensions that cost a fortune. Really? You want to support people like that? That's not right, I am sorry! Bottom feeders who don't want to work that have been unemployed forever and keep on extending unemployment. I am talking about people that cheat the system. I've seen women with luxury cars and giant diamonds go in and use an EBT card. Really? That's who I am talking about. That's ********!
I never post about this stuff but it seems you need a quick lesson one what you perceive vs what reality might be:
First, you said the girl is working? so that point is invalid?! Second, are you sure the women with luxury cards using the EBT cards OWN those cars, what if they borrowed it from a family member to go to the store to feed her baby? The giant diamond? Is it real? did you just have it appraised? This reminds me of hearing people say a girl on a free food line was using a brand new cell phone. Guess what! That cell phone was free because she is a domestic violence survivor who received a previously owned phone in order to feel protected....Everyone can end up in an situation. I hope you don't ever need help, karma might leave you a bottom feeder forever.

I'll bite.
To be honest and blunt: I am a card carrying liberal who is well versed in most of these issues and I agree with almost zero items on the Republican agenda - especially recently.
However, with the things I read, LIF, and my students (I teach high school government) I am often surrounded by political debate, and I am ALWAYS open to the other side. I will, on admittedly rare occasion, alter or soften my stances. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen.
Very few things in life are black and white. I try to teach my students to find that delicate balance of being able to see and even analyze the shades of grey while still forming an opinion they can stand firm on.
Unfortunately, I find that on LIF, the Republican viewpoint is too often represented by a cascade of rambling and blatant untruths.
I would sincerely enjoy reading an account of the Republican agenda that contains actual facts and refrains from using references to communism, socialism, Obama's birth certificate, or any of the other smoke screens that are erected to divert attention from the real issues.
I'm not saying it's never been presented. I vaguely remember some intelligent debates on the health care act. Besides, I don't read every post.
However, much of the time it sounds like the Republican viewpoint tumbles out like diarrhea of the mouth. Unfortunately, diarrhea is what happens when you're full of shit.

I don't know why I just read through most of this thread. It is so pointless and depressing. Every thing dissolves into infantile name calling and nastiness! There is truth on both sides. We need entitlements as a safety net when someone falls on hard times. However, in my line of work, I have seen tremendous abuses. It is human nature to take advantage when there are few consequences for doing so. The system itself is flawed too and there is a great deal of waste. I don't have a solution. It is a tough, but snottiness doesn't help. Also, a big problem with LIF is that it is VERY liberal and there aren't enough conservatives to have some balanced debates. One or 2 people end up expressing their republican view points and several dozen others attack them. Just my 2 cents.

The fact is that there are many people who take advantage of the system and many people who do not. I know people in real need who have been denied because of all the damn hoops that you need to jump through to get assistance from the government. I have also seen people who know how to work there way around the system get all the handouts (some of which they shouldnt get). It's clearly broke and needs fixing, how we go about it... hell if I know. I would start with mandatory drug testing for anyone receiving government assistance and better checks/balances, placement assistance for those on unemployment and welfare.
