But to add on - I also think there is a lot of "slut shaming" in regards to her performance. I say this because I feel like robin thicke's song is disgusting if you are to read the lyrics yet everyone seems to not see it or realize it or choose not to. Also - so many male performers do gross things or say gross things and no one seems to have an issue with it. Usher and others grab their crotches like Michael Jackson was infamous for. It's disgusting. So many male rock and rap stars are notorious for sleeping with a ton of groupies and fans - gene Simmons for example - and they rarely get heat for it. It's almost applauded. Or marveled at.
Miley doesn't have a rep for sleeping around. Her performance was icky but I never understood how women are constantly bashed for how they perform or what they sing when men aren't held to the same standard we have imposed for women.
Robin Thicke's song is disgusting and degrading. Lets not forget that. Miley didnt cheapen him. He had his whole cheapness already. But instead people claim to love his song, find him charming and handsome.

Thicke was quoted as saying this about the “Blurred Lines” video to GQ: “People say, ‘Hey, do you think this is degrading to women?’ I’m like, ‘Of course it is. What a pleasure it is to degrade a woman. I’ve never gotten to do that before. I’ve always respected women.’”
A representative for Thicke didn’t respond to a request for a comment.

Exactly... Those lyrics are VERY misogynistic. Do you really want your daughter to listen to a song that basically says I'm going to pound you so hard from the back your asss is going to explode... not to mention smacking it and pulling her hair.

If you go by song lyrics to most songs and look up the actual meaning everyone would have a problem wih songs
And I find a difference between sexy and pressing just up against the line wih lyrics as oppose on using a foam finger to basically pleasuring yourself while motorboating a chicks ass

I am ALL for slamming the double standard. I think it's awesome when a woman owns her own sexuality and doesn't apoligize for taking what she wants -
But I don't really see that as what Miley is doing. Miley, is trying DESPREATELY to make pepole talk about her. Her performance wasn't sexy, it wasn't artsy, it didn't push the envelope or break barriers - She was just .......gross. There was no preparation for her performance - it was just go out there and walk around w/ your legs spread as wide as possible and .....do what? Stick your touge out (What is WITH that anyway?)
She can't sing, she can't dance, she can't do much of anything - She isn't captivating like Madonna was, she doesn't have a voice like Christina, she can't dance like Britney, she isn't 'strange' like Gaga w/ an awesome off the wall producer - WHAT is it about this girl that makes her ANYTHING special? b/c I see nothing -
And for as much as I loathe Rihanna, I was laughing hysterically at the face she was making watching the Miley performance as if to say "WTF are you DOING?"
The only thing she has is the fact that once upon a time she was a kid star .......and now she's not a kid anymore so it's like "HEY look at me!! I'm NO LONGER what you want your kids to watch!!" - and that's about all

Of course she was pleased with herself. She wanted attention and she got it. Honestly I thought her act was disgusting but I'm not surprised. Almost everything on MTV is disgusting from it's videos to the song lyrics to the Jersey Shore showing the boys trying to find DTF girls and then making fun of the others. The whole thing is disgraceful.
She is trying to be a club kid. The outfits, the hair, the tongue sticking out. It's all a club kid act. If that is the audience she is going for then she was a success.
People were comparing her to Madonna's VMA performance back in the 80s....same thing just different times. Madonna was gyrating on the floor rubbing herself then. I totally remember watching it with my parents and getting embarrassed and leaving the room. For the 80s it was in bad taste, today it's considered nothing. Same thing just one has talent and one doesn't.

It is totally indicative of rape culture, but I also believe in agency, and some women are into the "game" that he is promoting. A woman can want her head to explode from a good shag without being victimized. I think that I choose to take it as more of a flirtation where the woman is actually the one doing the manipulating, you know? I read an article about Robin Thicke and his song and basically it was just a fun song that wasn't his usual shtick. I personally think it's a song that surely has a sexual context but was meant just to be fun and upbeat. That supposedly he asked his wife her opinions and she said it was racey, but condoned it. I also take blurred lines to mean a girl who teases and acts very sexual but isn't being clear if she really wants to act on those "suggestions" she is making. And that that's why they wear nothing or little clothes in the video, to show how sexually provocative they are acting but saying they are a good girl yet love to tease guys. Not saying that would lead a man to rape though...I think that's a given and understood that raping someone isn't ok.

If you go by song lyrics to most songs and look up the actual meaning everyone would have a problem wih songs
And I find a difference between sexy and pressing just up against the line wih lyrics as oppose on using a foam finger to basically pleasuring yourself while motorboating a chicks ass
I think he cheapened himself by performing with her and he didn't need to. People love him and the song
Who loved beetle juice and or working at foot locker is a whole different story
And as for his video. We just had this long thread on bf and its just a boob etc and now these woman in the video topless make him a rapist??
Te I know it's not the same so don't need to argue that I am just trying to say one day it's just a boob next day it's awful
And these woman had no prob doing it so neither do I

Ditto. Make room for me in the cave. Especially after his little gross quote to GQ. He's a loser and think he will be a one hit wonder.
He's been trying to break into music for awhile now and he needed helped of other artists. He's 36. Married. Acting like a 19 year old trying to sound cool. It just doesn't work, IMO.
And no one can convince me blurred lines is about a good girl giving off teasing vibes. Blurred lines/blurry lines is an excuse commonly used in rape or sexual assault where a man justifies rape because she was a tease/acted like she wanted it/he felt she "wanted it"/was under the influence.
There's not a single positive lyric in that song in reference to women or a woman. Not one. It doesn't glorify a woman in the least. It's degrading and msygonisitc.
This is why I think it's so important to actually READ what you're listening too in the car with your kids instead of just bopping your head along, kwim?
And I don't like anything that degrades women of men for that matter, which is why I've taken more to music lately such as jack johnson where it's all about love and peace. Not this ugly stuff with fuc ked up blatant-yet-concealed messages for our youth.
Just my 2 cents and no one has to agree.

And thats exactly right you can change the channel and you can choose to listen to something else if your that conservative. But lets not accuse an artist of condoning rape because you want to interpret the music that way. Because thats all it is your interpretation. And thats a very strong accusation. A word and an act not to be taken lightly or be thrown around...
