Re: Spin off the "keeping a kid home"
Speaking as a teacher..............it depends on the severity of the cold. If your kid is covered in snot and sneezing constantly and they can't breathe..........keep them home and let them rest. It might just be a cold but that first day or two of a cold is usually the worst and they don't feel well. There is nothing worse than a sick kids sneezing on all the materials and the other kids and touching everything. Before you know it the whole class is sick. I'm not saying stay home for a week but sometimes a day or two depending on how bad the cold is can't hurt.

As the mom of the kid that catches everything and is on the nebulizer, yes it bothers me when I see kids with a runny nose. I do think a cold is being sick.
Yet, I don't want my kid to get sick because it's an inconvience to parents of a child who is sick and they have to keep their kid home. Because I think in a lot of cases it's moms who don't want to (or can't!) take a day off work or they don't want to deal with a sick child all day long at home. In the end, MY kid gets sick. I can't protect him 100%, he is on preventive meds but it really irks me when I see people not caring that their kid is sick. I am the mommy who cancels playdates when DS is sick, cancel sessions when his therapists are sick or DS is sick. It goes both ways at my house. I don't expose my sick child to others because I don't know what health issues they may have. I expect the same from other people.
I started a post earlier today about my DD having a runny nose. I would give my left arm to be able to stay home with my DD everytime she has a runny nose. I am really surprised that you think that parents who send their kid to daycare/school with a cold "don't care" that their child is sick, wow.
I would not have a job if I stayed home everytime DD had a runny nose. Good for you that your job lets you take unlimited time off, please let me know where you work so that I may apply!
What you don't understand is that my kid may end up in the ER with an asthma attack.
How fair is that to HIM?
It's not about your job vs my job. It's about my kid getting sick.
So what I understand you are really saying is that because you cannot take time off or find an alternative, tough $hit on everyone else.
ETA: BTW, if you read carefully my post, you would have noticed "don't want" and "can't". It still does not change the fact that most people send a kid sick to school/daycare because they feel they have no other choice. KNOWING their kid is sick and other might be get sick too. Just because people feel they "had to" does not change the fact that they send a kid sick "hoping" the daycare will let it slide for 1 day. I have heard so many moms saying that they just can't be stuck in the house. They would go crazy. They bring their kid to open play places and let their sick kid infect everybody else.

Re: Spin off the "keeping a kid home"
My daughter's school has a policy that if the mucous is green, they have to stay home. DD had a cold last week, but it was very mild. A few sneezes & a runny nose, but it was all clear, no green, & she was acting her usual self so I sent her in. They ask the kids to wash their hands after sneezing or wiping their noses.

Its just a cold......... But like a few people have said...."just a cold" to YOUR kid is possibly dangerous to other kids who have asthma, diseases, illness etc.
I wouldnt send my kid with a cold ever...sometimes a lingering runny nose or cough if checked by a Dr...then yes and I would know they werent contagious.
My son has never had "just a runny nose"...so I dont know what I'd do if that was the case, but a cold is a illness to me.
Sometimes you also dont know when it is "just" a cold, which is how things more serious get passed around.
I know many parents have jobs where they cant lose time at, but that is no one's fault and no one or no child should have to get sick b/c of a CHOICE that parent made in careers....

Absolutely-that is EXACTLY what I am saying! I am a working mother and all I care about is making money and pawning my kid off on someone else so they can raise her AND make any and every kid infected with her multiple diseases!
And it is about my job vs your job-I don't have the luxury of unlimited days off-which I can only assume you do. A runny nose is not on the list of "why to keep your kid home" at my daycare-so that is what I follow, I don't like it, but I do it.
We all try to do our best (or at least I do) Good luck to your son this upcoming flu season

Re: Spin off the "keeping a kid home"
Ugh
This one hits close to home right now.
AJ has been absolutely suffering the past two days with a horrible cold. Total congestion and bubbly nose. Even a little yellow snot. Definately a fever.
She got it from a kid in Daycare. We saw the girl on Tuesday with yellow snot running down her nose and said "yep, AJ will be sick by Friday" She was sick by Thursday.
She didnt get a fever until Friday night and it go worse on Saturday and Sunday finally breaking over night. And yes, she's at Daycare now.
I agree with a lot of bits and pieces in here. I do think its annoying (hazardous for some) that sick children to a degree are sent to school. I agree I can't (not won't) take a day off each and everytime my child is sick (i just dont have the days to allow it). I agree that some parents should at least take more caution and realize how it can affect others.
You are not just hurting the child, but the parents too. And it comes back again. I got lucky that AJ was home for two days away from Daycare but other times she's stuck going back being around those sick kids more and more. They lysol and clean up that room every single night but kids will get sick. Its the nature of daycare. If I could afford it, I'd keep her home much more than just a day, but that's not possible.
So if its a cold and not a serious one at that, she goes to school. Its not the BEST choice but its the choice I have to and will make for my daughter.
Fever is always a home day... Lethargic is a home day.. Rashes unexplained are a home day..
But im still learning this racket - She's only a year old.

Re: Spin off the "keeping a kid home"
I don't think there is a blanket answer for this. I mean, if your child is fine, but has a runny nose, then sure, they should go to school. If they are uncomfortable or unhappy, then they should stay home...
I do have to say that having had Christopher in daycare in the winter/spring months, I do know that there is such a thing as "just a cold" and "just a runny nose" and I don't think it is fair if someone has never had their child in that situation. Daycare/school is different than a playdate where people can opt out if there is a runny nose.

Re: Spin off the "keeping a kid home"
a school-aged child has, on average, a viral exposure every 3 weeks - which usually means a cold.
you can't really prevent it. if the child isn't exposed at school, it will be at the supermarket, or at some other activity.
so no, i don't believe in keeping your kid home for a run of the mill sniffle...

I know many parents have jobs where they cant lose time at, but that is no one's fault and no one or no child should have to get sick b/c of a CHOICE that parent made in careers....
Seriously?
Because I chose to get my master's degree and have a high profile job (which I love, btw) I am somehow not as good of a mom?
Please tell me this is not what you meant.
My job is extremely flexible.
I think what some (not all, but some) SAHM moms don't understand is what daycare kids are like when it comes to colds.
I jokingly call DS's cough and runny nose "kennel cough" because he's had it since about 2 weeks into daycare.
I would have missed almost 2 years of work if I stayed home every day.

You express what I apparently was trying to say. It is not my fault nor DS' fault that someone does not have the option to take time off.
Just like if you come in the office and contaminate all your co-workers. I am sure they are not too thrilled either when someone comes in the office with "just a runny nose".
FTR, DS was in daycare until he was 11 months.

I do hope you did not mean that in a mean way.
My son is on the nebulizer everyday. For the 1st time in 1 year we are off for the Summer and will resume next month. Ask working or SAHM mom what it is to worry about your kid getting sick. Hearing your child having heavy breathing wondering if you are going to go to Xopenex every 4 hours around the clock, go to steroids, and hope you don't need to go to the ER.
So, no, I can't shelter him, he will be exposed. I can't help it. But I do need people to have common sense though and not knowingly expose him to a potential cold.

Again, good for you that you have that option.
I don't.
Or else I'll be on welfare and food stamps and someone will yell at me for not working for my kid's sake.
Homeless or going to daycare with the sniffles....hmmmmm.
If Logan has a fever, green snots, barking cough, etc, he stays home.
I do find a way.
But for a regular runny nose and cough, he's going to school.
And I would expect if a child in daycare had a compromised immune system or other serious health issue that precludes him from being in a germ-shared environment that his or her parents find another way. Looks like you did, so good.
I think your feeling that we are saying screw you, we don't care is mirrored right back. It's like you are saying, screw your job, I don't care.
I don't think this is an argument that can be won on either side.

Re: Spin off the "keeping a kid home"
I am unsure how mothers of asthmatics cope. My life seems to be this revolving nightmare. We are fortunate enough to turn to savings to help us through... I totally get where Sophie is coming from.
I babysat the same kid for 2 years, we had to stop the relationship, his mother worked in an elem school...he would show up at my door with a chest cold and then i would wind up in ER
I have a kid here dying to go to school. He tells me all the time he can't wait to leave me but I know what is out there, I can't risk it.
I see what Donna was saying as well. Believe me, the babysitting kid's mother..I called her selfish time and time again. We don't want your sick kid here as much as he doesn't want to be here sick.
I try and be proactive. I found the most empty library class, an unpopular art class...trying to decide if indoor or outdoor soccer is better...one has germs, the other has ozone issues after the rain.
i don't have no idea what is going to happen when he attends school.

Knowingly expose him to a POTENTIAL cold? I am supposed to worry about if my children may becoming down with a potential cold before letting them leave the house? I personally think that is crazy. My own doctor has told me that if their noses are running clear and they just have a cough they should go to school.
I am really sorry that your son has such health issues. My son spent most of his young life on a nebulizer too. But I did not think everyone at his daycare should stay home because of a cold and possibly lose their jobs. I mean seriously, you have to watch out for your own kid. And 12 kids can't stay home because one might get really sick from their little cold. If my son got so bad that he couldn't handle daycare, I would have had to work out a more appropriate situation for him. It would have been hard, but I am his mother and I do what I have to. I would not expect everyone else to cater to me. THat being said, my children always stay home 24 hours after a fever or when they are truly ill.

It does change the fact that a kid with a runny nose and cough is sick. That has nothing to do with your options. You decide to put him to school/daycare. That does not mean your kid is not sick. That's the bottom line of the issue.
It's not about career options, etc.. It's about sending a kid sick to school. Plain and simple!
I love when people try to put it back on other. The rational is easy. DS got sick because people sent sick kids to school. Let's not turn the tables here. There is no need to tell me that people need to feed their kid. I do too. Everybody does!

You make it sound like I wake up in the morning and say:
"Are you coughing Logan? You are? Good - daycare for you!!!"
I don't have the option to keep him home each and every time he has a runny nose.
Especially at this age when a runny nose could be teething for crying out loud.
If you understand that I need to feed my kid (as you do yours) then what is your proposed alternative if I cannot take off of work for each and every sniffle?
Seriously - I want to know.

Ummm I think I would delete this post at this point. Sometimes we do not know everyone elses full circumstances.
And you can't prove that my kid got your kid sick. Although I do encourage him to lick all the toys when he is sick. I mean if I can get more parents like you to keep their kids home my kid has a better teacher to child ratio...especially when he has a cold.

How do you feel when sick people come to your work? How do you feel when they have the sniffle and the next day you feel like crapola. You love it, right? That's what I thought.
I am a teacher. I deal with runny noses and coughs all day long. In my district they get annoyed when parents keep their kids home for little things like runny noses. If they are really sick keep them home. If not , send me an extra box of tissues for my room. Thank you.
