Re: Spinoff from raises: Pros/Cons of your job
Pros I come and go as I please- nobody watches me As long as my work gets done I can work from anywhere My boss is a friend of mine and SO cool- I pretty much have carte blanche No micomanaging Good pay Cell phone allowance Decent 401 K match I get money back for NOT taking their health benefits I get wined and dined a lot by vendors I can pretty much do what I need to for my daughter- work from home, Dr's appts, stay home when she is sick or daycare is closed, etc
Cons No paid maternity leave at all A lot of the people I deal with are MAJOR D-bags! Being a woman in a mainly male industry tends to put you at a disadvantage Stress!

Re: Spinoff from raises: Pros/Cons of your job
Pros: -I work with preschoolers, mostly with special needs and they are SO FLIPPING FUN! -I get to make music with aforementioned FUN kids. -Super duper cheap and incredibly high quality daycare in my building. -Every day I go there I have new experiences. -Incredibly supportive family-type feeling to the staff. -We do really fun events, like Santa comes, we have a petting zoo, ice cream truck comes, etc. -I laugh every single day.
Cons: -Pay is peanuts.

Re: Spinoff from raises: Pros/Cons of your job
PROS: I teach 1st and 2nd grade kids with autism and they are awesome! I have so much fun with them. We go on fun field trips. Good benefits. Vacation time and off in the summer. Option to work summer school and make $. Nice group of coworkers. Decent salary. Lots of opportunity for PD-I go to workshops all the time. I love what I do. Admins are nice to me and let me do my thing. Very little nit-picking.
CONS: 1.5 hr commute each way I shell out a lot of my own $$ for supplies, snacks, materials, etc. Dangerous neighborhood. Sometimes, its really sad to see what my students go through at home-its hard to leave it at work. I work like a maniac, in school and after.

Re: Spinoff from raises: Pros/Cons of your job
I have like 3 jobs right now.
For my main job and a 2nd job I work for a major test prep company as a manager. I also tutor a bit on evenings/weekends.
PROS: - I work from home. This is a pro and a con for me because I find work/life balance hard but I have physical issues so not commuting is great - Most of the people I work with are young, laid back and nice. - I get to help people -Decent benefits, 401K, Pension -I get bonuses on commission -I've been here awhile so I have 4 weeks vacation -Get to meet really great families when I tutor
CONS: - Sales are a really big part of my job and there is a LOT of pressure -I don't like not ever seeing people face to face -My phone is monitored and my boss gets a spreadsheet of all of my calls, so performance is a day to day thing -pay is pretty low, even with bonuses -have to deal with some really umm interesting clients.
I also work PT as a Disney Vacation Planner
PROS: -I get paid to plan Disney Trips. -I have good excuses to take Disney trips for research - I get some decent travel discounts -I get to help people make dreams come true
CONS: -Pay is VERY low for the amount of work -I feel pressure with this job too (if only from myself) because I need to find my own clients, etc.

Alcohol: Office supplies a stash. Requests are taken. I usually ask for Mikes Hard Lemonade Margarita. On any given day and generally after lunch (if not during) you can just pop one open. A beer near your desk is not shocking. A few beers near piles and piles of paper work at 4:30 is most likely a given.
I thought Sterling Cooper wasn't hiring.

Re: Spinoff from raises: Pros/Cons of your job
Pros:
Flexible schedule: I basically make my own work hours and have the option to work from home on some days if I'm doing field work.
Pension: IF I decide to stay here for awhile I get a pension. But it's highly unlikely I'll be here long enough to really benefit from it, but it's nice that it's an option.
Benefits: The pay sucks but I have 14 paid holidays, 20 vaca, 8 sick, and 4 personal days. We also close pretty frequently just because lol. (Gotta love working for the Archdiocese)
Bosses/Co-workers: I like the people I work with and don't have crazy bosses.
COL 3.5% raise - They just started this again.
I can wear jeans and sneakers to work!
Cons:
Pay- it's really the overall field in general. I think I actually make more then others. It's still a con though.
Work itself- Clients are annoying and stress me the F out lol.
Work location(s)- I work in pretty bad areas...it's not fun lol.

Re: Spinoff from raises: Pros/Cons of your job
funny you ask this...DH and i sat down almost a year ago bc he wanted me to switch jobs. the main con is that my commuting expenses are ridiculous....i have to pay for the whitestone bridge toll both ways and gas. and the salary is not much with an every-other-year 3% raise.
but when i sat down with DH i had two pros listed: #1 - i get 5 weeks vacation which when its time we are blessed with a child i will need to be the one taking off of work for sick days etc bc DH job is too demanding.
#2 (which was the selling point for DH and now he says i can never leave my job)...i get a pension!!! you dont come across those very often anymore and i am grateful to have it i also have a 401k and a boss that i have such a great relationship with it makes work enjoyable. i dont have a very stressful job so i dont go home thinking about work or ever having to do work from home on nights/weekends or even vacations.
i am truly fortunate

Re: Spinoff from raises: Pros/Cons of your job
Had my fair share of lousy jobs so my present job is paradise for me...(its all relative, right?) - I am staff counsel for a major insurance company.
PROS: -my commute is great (initially worked out of the NYC office. Now I work off Route 110 in Suffolk and its only a 45 min drive vs. 1 1/2 hr by LIRR/Subway). -decent pay for general amount of hours worked (40-50 hrs/week - almost no weekends) -low billable hourly requirement - I get to go home for lunch sometimes when I finish court early -opportunity to work from home in some cases (ie weather related emergencies, the office tells everyone not to bother coming in- work from home, or based on manager approval) - no micro-managing at all (as long as we pull our weight in the office) - get to travel a lot and not inside an office all the time - great benefits (4 weeks vacation, 401K with 5% company match, dental/health are only 20% out of my monthly paycheck)
CONS:
-I deal with some annoying and nasty judges, arbitrators and opposing counsel - not much upward mobility at my firm (there is no partnership track - we are all counsel working for a General Counsel that manages the entire northeast region) - always have to be reading/checking/responding to email (even if I am on vacation, urgent items require my intervention ) - no casual dress wear ever allowed in the office (business attire required at all times, even if its Christmas Eve and only 3 people are in the office ) - limited intellectual challenge of my job (its all insurance related work, I don't get to dabble in anything with real estate, bankruptcy, or other areas that may interest me) - the negative perception other people have of lawyers (no, we are not all pond suck**ing scum).
I am sure there are more but I can't think of any right now...

Re: Spinoff from raises: Pros/Cons of your job
I just found out about a very nice pro of my job...
Got a call from the office manager just now (I work in the satellite office) and she asked what day I was taking off, Friday or Monday. I asked her what she was talking about and she said we get a day off for our birthdays and since mine is on Saturday, I can choose which day I want off! I'm so excited now!!!!
