SPINOFF: Healthy sleep habits happy child"(getting DS to sleep while still awake)
I have the book and have read the book. Im going to read it again in case Im missing comething. DS is 10 weeks. The only thing I see this book recommending is CIO or (extinction or the other one where you check in on the baby and soothe them)
Don't see how the book taught someone how to get their baby to fall asleep while still awake?? (unless its cio)
Please help me understand if im missing something. I keep reading this book over and over to make sure Im not missing anything
DS is now sleeping around 6 hours a night, the past week or so(still think it's a fluke) but still needs to be put to sleep before I put him down even for naps) He starts daycare in two weeks!! Im so afraid he isn't going to get ANY sleep because they wont have time to soothe him to sleep!!

Re: SPINOFF: Healthy sleep habits happy child"
I wanted to not use CIO with DS (after trying it and finding it to be a horrible experience for everyone involved), but when he was about 7 months, his sleep was very off. This book helped me think about his sleep patterns, and we made some adjustments. I think he was sleeping too late in the morning, taking his morning nap too late, and often skipping or taking a short afternoon nap, and then nights were a mess. Once the daytime sleep was more regular, he did much better at night. We also moved up his bedtime.
I thought there were some soothing tips also, though maybe I'm not remembering correctly. The book "The No Cry Sleep Solution" might offer more in the way of non-CIO sleep help.
10 weeks is pretty young to STTN though, some kids do it, but it seems that most I've known need a little more time. STTN at 4-5 months is on the early side.

Thanks for your insight. Im not opposed to CIO for when he is older. Just wondering how to put DS to Sleep even for a nap while still awake. It seems many babies as young or younger can do this?
ETA: When He starts daycare they will have to "train" him to do this b/c they won't have the time to sooth him to sleep im sure of it. Just wanted to make the transiton easier and having him get used to falling asleep while still awake. Im afraid he wont get ANY sleep at daycare

Re: SPINOFF: Healthy sleep habits happy child"
from what i remember it mainly taught me the sleep patterns & how to avoid having a cranky kid so that when I did put DD down awake and happy she would fall asleep. (since she wasnt cranky)
I knew to put DD down after an hour or an hour and a half of being awake and since she wasn't over tired she would fall asleep on her own. It worked 95% of the time , sometimes I had to rub her belly or sing to her to help soothe her.
But again, the key to the book was to understand how often your DC needs sleep and putting them to sleep before they were cranky.
HTH!

You don't use the CIO piece until MUCH later in that book. In the early months the book is just providing guidelines on how to get optimum sleep (up 2-2.5 hours, down for a nap).
At 10 weeks if he's falling asleep before you put him down, that's fine. What happens if you put him down while drowsy, but still awake? How are you putting him to sleep (rocking, nursing, bottle, etc). Both my girls were usually fast asleep from nursing when I put them down at that age, but over time they were more awake. I never had an issue.
If he's sleeping that much at night, you're doing really well.

I learned from the book and watching DS that after an hour of being awake,, he needs to be put down to sleep. So I just start holding him and walking around with him using the paci and he falls alseep. I wait and then put him in his bassinet. (trying to transfer to the crib soon.. thats another story)
If I put him down when he is tired he will cry and want to be pick up. I let him CIO for 3 MIN ONLY,,then I pick him up. So should I put him down even before he gets tired?? maybe 10 mins before the time I'd start "rocking' him so he goes in his crib without crying.. then maybe he will fall asleep like that?

Sorry, I misread the end of your first post. Yes, the book does say it's best to put them down before they are visibly tired (rubbing eyes, etc.) or right away if you notice these signs. You can try putting him down a little earlier than you do know (even 10 minutes might make a difference) and see what happens.
Also, do you have a white noise machine or something like the FP Aquarium? DS loved looking at the latter, and we used the white noise machine a lot, and that helped him get to sleep. Even if they won't use that in daycare, it might help him learn to go to sleep a bit more easily without rocking. etc.

We have put DS down awake since he was your DS's age. We always swaddled him, put on the FP aquarium and some white noise and left the room. He got used to falling asleep within minutes and still does at almost 8 months.

And he never cried??? Ugggg lucky!! I have the FP aquarium and a fan that we use a night, White noise. If he's tired..he will cry when I put him down. I let him cry for 3 mins and then get him and sooth him to sleep.
Twice he fell asleep on his own. I was shocked. Once in his swing right at his morning nap time and once in his crib.. .but he only stayed asleep for half hour. (not used to sleeping in crib.

He cried a few times and we had to do a modified CIO at 4 1/2 months. But sometimes they need to learn to self soothe. I also recommend 12 Hours Sleep by 12 Weeks Old. It was another great book!
