with the 'best' plan at my job, I still pay about $200/paycheck ($400/month) out of pocket. with a $500 deductible and the coverage is only 95% of bills (this is the 'best' plan they offer)
Chat Icon this is the worst coverage I have ever had with any job.

that's really not a bad plan at all. It could be far worse..read others.

Re: Spinoff-So, how much do YOU pay for healthcare?

We pay nearly $1,000 a month for CRAPPY insurance with a HUGE deductible. When I was a teacher I was paying $215 a month for awesome coverage. After reading how little some people pay I now understand why you wouldn't mind paying a little more. I would have said the same thing a year ago before I had my son and was paying so little in insurance. However, now I definitely don't want to pay one penny more. It is becoming a financial hardship for me to stay home to raise my son with the insurance cost. Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff-So, how much do YOU pay for healthcare?

About $400 a month for a family plan, no dental, no vision and it no longer covers the full cost of my medical bills... I get additional bills every time I go for a blood test or a sonogram and since I'm pregnant, that's all the flippin time.

I pay nothing. Employer covers me, my husband and our children. I don't know if that will change.

we have a $5000 per year deductible-we have an HSA & we do not have vision or dental coverage

Same here...its our first year with an HSA so I am worried about going to the DR for the first time under this plan!

$200 per month for family coverage.

Dental and Vision is free

Same here. We are very fortunate that we (DH) have good coverage. When I had fertility treatments to get pregnant with DS, we paid nothing.

I also pay an extra $30 a month for dental through my job since my dental is better than DH's.

$0 for me on my own plan
$0 for DH, me & 2 chidlren on his plan

If I opted for family coverage (family of 4) on my plan, it would be $300/mo.

COBRA would be $1,786/mo.Chat Icon

We pay $277 a month through DH's emplyer (family of 4). This is for health, dental and vision. REALLY exceptional coverage too!

ETA: We have no copys either. It is a self-funded EPO.

I pay 9% of my salary, I have no co-pays, prescriptions for my children are free, and at the moment they are free for me as I am maternity exempt. I can go see my GP everyday if I want with no charges at all, I receive no hospital bills, no copays nada.

I personally am a huge fan of socialised medicine and that would keep me from moving back to the states.

I am not trying to be argumentative or snarky - I am just honestly really curious how this works. 9% seems like a significant amount of money to me. Even if I factor it out at a salry siginificantly less than mine it seems like a large portion of someone's salary who does not make that much to begin with. I would say with my current insurance I have pretty much the same benefits (no copays, can see my doctors whenever, $5 presriptions, my DS's formula has been free and delivered to us) - I know that not everyone has this and that is a shame.

Like I said - I am honestly curious so please do not take it the wrong way because it seems that for the amount that you pay you SHOULD be getting everything you do. Does EVERYONE pay this is or is there a certain income level that is exempt?

Re: Spinoff-So, how much do YOU pay for healthcare?

i have to double check with DH but i think it's around $300 a month for both us and i don't think it goes up if we have a kid...i think when he added me as a spouse he had to get the family plan even though there are just two of us...this is through his job..

i know that before he added me he paid a lot less - and mine was about $40 a month through my job when i was working...

Nothing. I have amazing health insurance that covers my family for free. It covers everything in-network, 80% of out of network charges, and my deductible is only $550 so anything out of pocket past that is covered as well.

Salaries in the UK are lower numberwise than salaries in the US are, so a really good salary might only be, oh say, £35K while in the US $35K might be considered a lower salary. Everyone pays the same exact thing, and everyone, whether you are employed currently or not gets the same exact thing, if you are from a lower income bracket, you probably don't have to pay £7 for your prescriptions, and I know in Wales prescriptions are free. Dental is also free if you can get in with an NHS dentist. My NHS contribution isn't taxed further, like I believe that your healthcare is benefitwise. Attitudewise people are happy to pay this so that everyone can have healthcare, whether you are a citizen or not, regardless of colour, creed, race etc. Its just a different thing completely here. I don't know if I answered your questions or not...but everyone who is employed and makes over a certain amount (you can make a certain amount of money before you are taxed)

Re: Spinoff-So, how much do YOU pay for healthcare?

I think it is around $250 per month (it is through DH's employer). That is for Family plan and will stay the same whether or not we have children.

We have no co-pays, and pay close to nothing for prescriptions.

Our Dental and Vision are covered too. They differ slightly but for us it works out pretty well.

We are lucky.

My company covers my full health care cost but I still pay $159/month for DH. It's a family plan so when/if I have kids it'll be the same price. I'm not complaining, what DH was paying was nothing short of highway robbery.

I'm astounded to hear how many pay nothing or relatively little. I'm wondering how many of those same people know the true cost of their health care - what their company is paying for that coverage.

Our health care was just over $6800 in payroll deductions last year - that's just for me and DH. No dental and just discounts on vision care. With co-pays, prescriptions, dental and vision care expenses we spent just under $10,000 for our health care last year.

We just got our new info from DH's employer and our insurance is going up by almost $1200 a year. Chat Icon I'm grateful that they are not reducing the coverage, but it's getting more and more expensive when our property taxes go up and we have pay cuts at work.

Not to start a political discussion, since I know that's not what the OP was looking for, but...I think it's refreshing to hear this point of view from someone who is extremely happy w/ socialized medicine, and would be deterred from moving back to the states because of it.

It's no secret that in the U.S., far too many people are "left out in the cold" when it comes to health benefits. And everyone is getting all up-in-arms about having to pay the way of those who don't have insurance...but come on, who do we think is paying for it now, the way things are???

To answer the original question (and to help illustrate my point): We recently switched insurance to my DH's plan. It's a family plan which covers DH, myself, our DD, our DS on the way, and any other children we may have in the future.

The cost is $950 per month, and DH's boss only pays $150 of it (small business). So, it's costing us $800 a month...WAYYYY more than the 9% that people in the UK are paying.

We thought I would make out better with my insurance--I'm a public school teacher in NC. I was covered 100%, but it would have actually cost us MORE to have DH and our kids under my plan.

It's sickening.

Re: Spinoff-So, how much do YOU pay for healthcare?

It is so interesting to see the responses.... from paying nothing to thousands of dollars a month... and that is just the premium!

We are fortunate to pay $200 a month pre-tax for a family plan.

Copays are $20 for office visits and prescription drugs. We have a $300 deductible for everything else, then pay 10% coinsurance to a $2000 out of pocket maximum.

My company only has high deductible health plans with high out of pocket maximums so I feel very lucky to be covered under DH's plan.

However there is a trade off - he is not paid what he is worth, but we deal with that b/c his benefits are top notch.
