This clearly does not look like you are trying to avoud a debate.
It's an anonymous poll - I don't see why you think that automatically means "debate."

No. I love my town because of the busy Main Street and the fact that small businesses can flourish here. I hope I never get the chance to jeopardize the great, living town we have just for an extra few minutes of convenience. I'm already a little annoyed that we don't have a local grocer that I can use.

Most polls that stem off a post that has clearly different opinions in my experience, end up in a debate. My bad, sorry for assuming.

I appreciate the expertise of the wine store owners...
Ditto - we have a wonderful liquor store near us and the staff always makes excellent recommendations. I enjoy going there to see what new finds/recommendations they have...I wouldn't be willing to give up the service.

Yes, yes, yes!
I HATE that we can't get Trader Joe's "Two Buck Chuck" here in NY. I have seen beautiful wine sections in supermarkets out of state and would love to be able to pick it up there!
actually the Trader Joes on Union Square has their "wine store" right next door so you can get it. you just have to go into the store from the other side of the entrance and pay on a separate line.
and the Costco in Brooklyn has a liquor store directly next to it. same deal as above, different entrace, different line, but you don't really go off premises.

I wouldn't think that they would have the good LI Wines that I like anyway. No?
Here in Southern California they sell wine in supermarkets (among other places), and they do carry local wines from small wineries in the area. Not sure if it would be the same situation with Long Island wines, but I wouldn't rule it out.

Nope. As I said before I like to support the local economy & liquor stores are more knowledgable with recommendations.
Plus I doubt a grocery store is going to have the wine we prefer to drink.

Honestly, wherever its cheaper. I am all for small business, but if someone is going to mark up their product 50%, I will buy at Walmart, happily.

I live in NJ now and I buy it in the supermarket. Its a whole new world and love it. But I also still buy from the local liquor store. I guess it depends how much of a Alchy you are
I also want add that I am not in the suburbs, actually my apt in Jamaica estates was more surburban and quieter than where i live now in NJ.

I agree with this too, the supermarket sells the liquor cheaper than two of the local liquor stores around my hood. However, there is one local store that does have good prices and when we arent in a crunch, we go there.

Re: Spinoff to Buying wine/ in supermarkets
I would only do it if I needed it for a recipe & wouldn't get a chance to go to the liquor store before I started cooking.
Wine to drink I would buy at the liquor store, which is actually cloer & more convienent to me than the supermarket.
ETA--I like that wine isn't too cheap--keeps me from drinking too much!

Re: Spinoff to Buying wine/ in supermarkets
I wouldn't wash my feet with the kind of wine I see them selling in supermarkets and places like Walmart out of state! I've witnessed this when I went to PA to visit friends of DH or when I went to visit family in the state of Washington. And there's no speciality wine/liquor stores to try and get the good stuff. That's why my Aunt Pat drinks boxed wine
I'm sorry, but if I brought the stuff they sell in there home to my Italian, first generation American husband he would DIVORCE me immediately!
So, yeah, I'm going to go with 'never'. I would never buy wine in a supermarket or store like that.
I'm picky about the stuff they sell here in wine stores! Life is too short to drink bad/cheap wine! I have that sign I bought out East at a Vineyard all ready to hang in my new kitchen when we close next month!

Re: Spinoff to Buying wine/ in supermarkets
Would I buy wine in a supermarket or walmart? Yes, if I was pressed for time and it was out of convenience.
I would not stock up on my wine at a supermarket though. I prefer to do that at a wine/liquor store, where there is a bigger, better selection, and where there are knowledgeable sales people.

Re: Spinoff to Buying wine/ in supermarkets
...oh and by the way, the wine I buy is by NO means expensive - it is just good quality. even at my local liquor/wine store it is anywhere from $9.99 - $14.99 a bottle. And the stuff that is 15 bucks is like liquid gold! I mean, really good stuff. So, don't think I'm spending 40-50 bucks a bottle. It is nowhere near that.

Several of the food stores where my mom lives (in SC) have extensive wine selections. And the Costco has some great prices on nice wines we'd pay a lot more for here in NY at a liquor store.

I just feel that the ability to do this is NOT a New York thing.
that is the fodder of suburbs and strip malls, and since my primary home is in NYC (which would sadly have to follow the rules of the rest of the state) it would just continue to homogenize neighborhoods across the state.
how BORING convenience is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good LORD!!!!! I COULDN'T AGREE MORE!!!!!!!
I *love* the variety of my little stores - my farmer's market for yummy veggies in the summer, my local wine place for great bottles of wine, the guy down the street who refinishes my wood furniture or changes out old frames on my pictures. If everything revolved around Walmart how freaking boring would life be!!! There would be no variety, no spice of life, no options, no choices.
I've seen it - my Uncle lives in the State of WA, population 200 in his town - literally, someone has to DIE in order for you to get a post office box. Walmart came in, took over, all the small places went out of business and now if you don't shop there, you don't shop. If you don't work there, you don't work. And if you want something they don't have then drive SIX hours to the nearest city.
HELLLLL NO! I went to visit him for one week - I was counting the minutes until I returned home. Just simply going out for ice cream or Italian Ices in the summer was a huge thing because there aren't any options!
AMEN OPHELIA!

The Costco near me sells wine - Holbrook - I went there, it was nice, but nowhere near the kind of selection that my local store has.
They had SIX varities of Sauvignon Blanc. NONE from Chile (GASP). So, six vs. my local place which has like over 125 or so varities of Sauv. alone.

Re: Spinoff to Buying wine/ in supermarkets
ABSOLUTELY! (well, except for the fact that we live in NYC)
When we lived OOS the supermarkets had a gigantic wine/liquor section (some stores had 5 full aisles) and it was incredibly convenient. I really miss it now...
The only reason I probably wouldn't buy it in the supermarket now is because the NYC supermarkets are tiny and overpriced, we do most of our grocery shopping online, and we found the most incredible wine/liquor warehouse in the village with rock bottom prices and a mind-boggling selection.
If we lived on LI - in a heartbeat (as long as they were modeled after other states)

Yes, I would. I wouldn't expect it to be a fine wine, but if I'm running to Waldbaums and the liquor store was closed I'd grab a bottle there if I needed to.

Re: Spinoff to Buying wine/ in supermarkets
I think there is a HUGE misconception about quality of wines sold in supermarkets.
I have lived in many states, all of which sold wine and beer in supermarkets (not hard liquor). Some supermarkets had incredible selections and all of the others had selections that were certainly adequate with nice, drinkable bottles that you would not be embarassed to serve for company.
DH and I are complete wine snobs - we collect wines and have even toyed with the idea of moving to Oregon to start a winery. You can definately find good wine at supermarkets - not Opus One or Petrus - but still decent wines.
Not wanting to buy them at supermarkets for philosophical reasons is completely different. Although I must add, that I never saw a shortage of liquor stores and wine stores in any of the places I have lived.

Re: Spinoff to Buying wine/ in supermarkets
Yes and no. I think at the supermarket it would be more of an impulse buy. But if I was deliberately going out to buy a bottle of wine, I'd go to the liquor store.
ETA: there have also been times I wanted to get a bottle of wine, but the liquor store was closed. I'd go to the supermarket in that case as well.

Re: Spinoff to Buying wine/ in supermarkets
The liquor store that I go to is on the way to my house FROM the supermarket I go to - so no. I wouldn't buy wine in a supermarket.
I also own a small business so I try my hardest to buy everything that I possibly can from a local business.
I also live in a village and I do NOT want it to turn into a ghost town.

Only if I needed it for cooking (something cheap).
I'd rather spend a little more for the sellers knowledge than a 16 year old in the food store.
