Re: Spinoff to Buying wine/ in supermarkets

Yes. If I want a wine just to drink with dinner, yes it's fine. I know my wines and grapes and it doesn't hurt to try it. If I am having guests over or some other special occasion then I got to the liquor store to spend a bit more.

However, my answer may be a bit biased as the places I lived / live in are in great wine regions and you can buy wine in the supermarkets in these places. Chat Icon

Yes, I would. They sell wine and beer in the food stores in NC where I am from. Ingles had a very nice section/selection, I loved it!

No.
We only buy wine from a winery/orchard upstate. It's a place that DH has been going to since he was a child and we've been going together since we met. We feel it's important to support them.

No.

Than again DH & I are wine drinkers, so I don't believe that a supermarket or Walmart is going to be catering to our wine taste buds.

In Florida where my parents have a place Publics has a great wine seclection...a full liquor store section--their wine is identical to that in NY wine/liqour stores I was Chat Icon when I saw it!

yep, I am in FL, and the selection at Publix is great. An entire aisle from cheap to moderately expensive.

No. DH and I hit our favorite Finger Lakes wineries every summer and stock up for the year. I very seldom buy wine but I'd probably go to a liquor store.

Arizona and Seattle the same. Extensive wine section with a full selection in every price range and variety.

I would love it!

eta: and I am a wino.

I live in NJ and our local Sams Club (wallmart owned) sells wine and liquors. I've picked up great bottles at decent prices. Many from the vineyards I loved when I lived just outside of Napa.

Honestly, wherever its cheaper. I am all for small business, but if someone is going to mark up their product 50%, I will buy at Walmart, happily.

ITA. If the same bottle of wine is much cheaper at Walmart, than I'm buying it there. Call me mean or whatever, but I'm not made of money.

I wouldn't think that they would have the good LI Wines that I like anyway. No?

Here in Southern California they sell wine in supermarkets (among other places), and they do carry local wines from small wineries in the area. Not sure if it would be the same situation with Long Island wines, but I wouldn't rule it out.

The whole idea has brought me back to my SoCal days and the selection was wonderful. I do understand supporting local businesses and I totally do, but I really do miss that option.

Re: Spinoff to Buying wine/ in supermarkets

I understand why not to, I actually wish liquor stores sold beer, wine and liquor. That's what I'm used to growing up. DH doesn't ever buy beer in the grocery store, so for parties I feel like we're driving to the Beverage for beer and the liquor store for wine. Don't want them in the grocery store or WalMart, just in one store.

Re: Spinoff to Buying wine/ in supermarkets

When I go to Maine they sell Wine in the food stores and they have a huge selection of all different wines. I think its a great idea for when you are in a crunch and have last minute guests coming over so you dont have to run to a million places. If I was going to go for something specific or knowing I was just going to get wine I would go to the Liquor store.

I know people are worried about the mom and pop stores and so am I but I would rather the state make money on last minute wine shoppers than closing our parks...I think its

Re: Spinoff to Buying wine/ in supermarkets

Well, I bought wine qt Stop and Shop a few months ago and it was AWFUL. I bought it for cooking but tried to drink the rest. Yuck. I said no for that reason.

I would love if the hard stuff was sold. It is on thing I miss about living in CA... buying vodka at a liquor store makes me feel like an alcoholic! It was so convenient to buy it at the grocery store.

Beer vs everything else... if one is sold the other should be sold.

P.S. there are PLENTY of mom and pop liquor stores in CA. My roommate and I would go to those too, occasionally.

Re: Spinoff to Buying wine/ in supermarkets

I am not much of a drinker, only occasionally do I have the desire to have a glass with dinner, so for me it would be a great convenience. I am not a wine connoisseur, so a limited selection wouldn't mean much to me.

We all have our interests, I am a quilter, I buy 99% of my fabric at specialty quilt shops. I know and have relationships with the owners, I want to support them. Some of the fabric you find at JoAnns is OK but certainly not something I will put in an heirloom quilt or a quilt I am giving away. In my area I can think of 8 quilt shops and 2 JoAnns fabric stores. Convenience doesn't always win out to quality of product and owner relationships.

Yes, if we are drinking for quantity then I want something cheap.

we would still go to a wine store, winery, or order online for special wines or for special occasions.

I love wine and yes I do taste a difference but it is very rare that I don't like a wine, even if its cheap!

I wish they could have the trader joe's wine shop everywhere - apparently there is a law in NYC that a chain store can only have one location. They built the one in union square so we have to suffer in queens! NOT FAIR!!!!
