sean, I am not so sure that your seat cost more than carrying-on a pet. From someone who has BTDT it can be the same or more expensive, depending on the airline & the time of booking. But it is neither here nor there. (When) Pets are allowed and unfortunatley for you that puts the burden on you to find out if you will need to make arrangements, whether they be meds or changing your seat/flight.
Lets play out a scenario. Person doesn't know they have a pet allergy. In mid air they have some type of attack due to a pet in the cabin, which causes the plane to have to do an emerygency landing. Who would be to blame in that case?
No one...it's a blameless situation.

Re: Spinoff to Dogs in Stores
Posted by KittyTheStray Exactly, now that you know, you can be better equipped. All I am trying to say is my cat IS ALLOWED on the plane and I followed the rules, so why should I have to be removed from the plane? I have places I need to be, and I should not have to change my flight because of your condition (sorry if problem was the wrong word to use). It's just like the example another posted had about perfume, I am allergic to it, but it's allowed so what am I gonna do, ya know? I take a Claritin, bring my inhaler and deal. Now that you know, just don't book with airlines that allow animals to fly. I am not bringing my cat somewhere he’s not allowed, he’s allowed and I paid in advance for him to be there.
My comment about the $150 was not to imply you didn't pay more, it was more an annoyance at the fact that I have to pay an extra $150 but he's treated as one of my carry-ons, so what exactly am I paying $150 for?? They don't serve him any peanuts or anything!
It's okay that you have your opinion but we both feel very strongly about them. I wasn't in any life threatening shape but I do have my allery meds in my carry on in case of anything. I think that we both can say that we each have valid points and move on from there. No hard feelings about it.

Re: Spinoff to Dogs in Stores
Didn't have a chance to read through this entire thread (yet) - but I wanted to add why I was repulsed last night....
DH and I went to New Park Pizza in Howard Beach last night for a slice...we're having pizza, and this woman walks in with her shi tzu...she was carrying the dog in her arms.
Do you want to know what this dog did? It began to lick the counter...the napkin holder...and the box of straws....
now explain that to me? A few people waiting to get their pizzas had a look of horror on their face, and one woman grabbed her two children and left....
What did the dog owner do? NOTHING...put the dog on a seat at a table, and the dog continued to "clean" (lick) the table clean.
Not that I eat off the table or anything...thank goodness for paper plates...but seriously? How can that be sanitary? Health Code violation or not...but I hold responsibility fully on the dog owner...just b/c she was "used" to having her dog lick her house...doesn't mean it can be done in a place serving food.

ewwwwww -- see i definitely would have said something to the owner. i love animals--but i don't care how cute you think the dog is--or how much $$ you spend at the groomer--its NOT your child and its not supposed to be there licking around tables and such. that is just downright disgusting

Should I bother?
Why not.
Let me put in a disclaimer by saying this is not directed at any particular poster or posters.
I - personally - don't have any problem with seeing a dog in a grocery. I am not afraid of them, I am not allergic to them and I have two little boys who do things way grosser than any puppy could.
Having said that - I would never bring a pup into a store. Because there ARE people who are allergic, because there ARE people who are afraid and because there ARE people who are disgusted by the idea of a dog - ANY dog - being in a place where food is bought, sold and consumed.
It's consideration for others - plain and simple.
When I cough or sneeze, I cover my nose and mouth. There is no law or sign saying that I MUST cover my up when coughing. Most people probably wouldn't even NOTICE if I let out a sneeze and didn't cover. But it's a matter of consideration. Even if I am in the cereal aisle and nobody else is walking by and there is zero chance of my germs getting on something someone is going to eat - I STILL cover my nose and mouth.
If it pleases you to take your dog into a store KNOWING that the potential exists that you could get someone sick or you might frighten someone or it is simply something that a good number of people are averse too - than I think that by definition you lack consideration for others.
I totally agree with this. I live in Manhattan and see dogs everywhere. But I still think you should bring your dog to Starbucks, the grocery store or a bunch of other stores.
We were once at a clothing store in Soho and a few tourists had their dog with them. It wasn't a hand held either. She was a decent sized dog. My daughter wanted to play with the dog, but I was concerend for her safety. So I picked her up and had to put my screaming child in the stroller because the dog was there.
Its about consideration for the people out there. Excellent example about covering your mouth. It may not be required, but its common courtesy. Something we are seriously lacking in this day and age.

Well she is obviously clueless. But I can also imagine that same lady bringing in her child, who may just as well lick the table, do gross things, etc.
I have seen a child licking the counter in MCDONALDS while waiting on line. The parent did nothing, was clueless, like the lady you describe. I find that just as digsuting, if not more so, than a dog licking the counter.
ETA - There are clueless parents of children and there are clueless parents of "furry" children. I find them equally as disturbing and selfish IMO. To me that's a whole other topic that could be discussed.

Personally, I think it's the airline's fault.
Sean learned to ask the airline before he flies from now on.
But, a pet on a plane isn't something you see every day. If it's an airline policy to allow them - fine. But, they should do a better job in advertising that fact, so that people with allergies know what they're getting into.
I would agree that the carrier could indeed let people know if there is going to be an animal on board. I think that releases the burden from the clients completely.

Posted by MsMBV I think people on LI have a different view since many of us have backyards & walk our dogs in the yard or around our residential blocks. When I am in the city you cannot walk 2 steps without someone walking their dog(s), so it is common to see many people walking their dogs & running errands with them.
And maybe this is the crux of the issue. It's true most LI'ers do have yards where they can let their dogs roam free so maybe it is almost a foreign concept for a lot of us.
I agree that in the city it is very common to see people walking their dogs on the street but to me that's a necessity - their dogs need to go out for exercise and to relieve themselves but is it necessary to bring em into a D'agastino?
Good morning! Glad you are still here
I think that b/c it is more commonplace in NYC & the boroughs, people are not as affected by it, KWIM? I know it does not change the law or the health code, but the reality is many people will go sidewalk shopping with their dogs...it happens every day. I'd honestly rather see someone bring their dog inside where it is safe & watched than be tied to a post or something where is can cause harm or get stolen or something.
I just think the bottom line is on LI it is not as common, so it strikes more of a chord with those who are opposed to it. I will say I got some very nasty looks on the LIRR last time I took Pyxie to the city, but once on the subway it was like she was not even there. I followed the rules & had her in a bag & such, and made sure not to travel during rush hour so that the people going to work would not be disturbed *if* she barked (which she did not, she slept the whole time).
I think it has to be a 2-way street, honestly. Like if it is allowed than those who oppose it really should respect that it is allowed, but I hate that when those of us who follow the rules are lumped in with people who have a blatant disregard for them.
M and Goob - I totally understand what you're both saying and as for the city, yes, I think there is a greater tolerence due to extenuating circumstances. But when it comes to LI'ers, I just don't see the need for it.
Ah, I guess we can agree to disagree. But I am going to call the Suffolk BOH to check their policy on food stores. I'm curious now!

Ah, I guess we can agree to disagree. But I am going to call the Suffolk BOH to check their policy on food stores. I'm curious now! Definitely let us know what you come up with. I'd wager to say that in most areas where people have cars, etc, they can chose to leave the dog at home if they have to go do errands, etc. I also think that most stores now make it pretty clear when a dog is not allowed, and that rule should be respected.

Posted by MsMBV In that case the person with allergies has to identify themselves, just like your friend with the peanut allergy. In that case the person is alerted that there is a dog in the cabin and usually they will reschedule someone's flight if the person determines that their allergy is too severe to treat or pre-treat with meds, and is dangerous for them to be in the same plane.
But since it is allowed the person with the allergy has the burden of finding out if there is a danger on board.
I have to speak about this one. I am allergic to cats. I had my first bad experience on a trip back from Myrtle Beach last year. The next row they had a women with a cat in a carrier. In my over 20 years of flying I have never had a problem but this time my eyes were itching and watery. It was very uncomfortable for me. Why should I have to be inconvienced and change my flight because she had a cat. Why shouldn't they make her change her flight if there is a person with allergies on the flight?
MsMBV you know you're my girl.
Shawn - I'm not lookin' to re-hash anything but I think what happened in your case was unavoidable. You had no idea you were allergic to cats. Of course now you do so you can act accordingly. I.E. book a flight with an airline that doesn't allow pets, let the airline know you have allergies, etc.
I don't think anyone was to blame in your situation, just a case of bad luck. Did you at least move your seat? If you're not near a person with the pet, would that make a difference?

No I called a few weeks ago and I didn't mention food stores to the BOH person, just clothing stores. So that's why I'm going to call back.

I'm a dog lover, and have an 80lb. Boxer, BUT when my SIL bought their little Maltese to the church for my son's Baptism I was NOT happy...I know its a little different BUT I feel that pets do not belong in stores, churches, beaches (while people are sunbathing), etc...to each its own yea, but when it comes down to it, its all about being considerate. With that said...I hope my dog gets a piece of my upstairs neighbor's a$$ one day...can't stand her

Unless your dog has no dander or no hair, whether it's big or small, the offense to someone who is allergic, and the offense to someone who may be terrified of dogs, is ALL THE SAME, even if you are carryng them in your arms or in a bag. Both are just as egregious.
And for the record, I have the tiniest, most tame little chihuahua on the planet, and I would never fathom to bring him into a store, no less a supermarket!
