I'm sure people voted for Obama because he is black and people voted for McCain because he is white. I don't think either of those reasons alone are good enough to earn a presidential vote. I understand the pride behind wanting your race to be represented. I'd like to see a woman president or a president of my nationality. But I wouldn't vote for them on that basis alone.
eta - i think it's great so many new people registered to vote regardless of the reason

Why does Obama want to tax the crap out of the hard working people and go easy on the people who choooooose to overspend, go on welfare or get a job making low income? I am choosing to get an education so that I can make a living for myself and my family..im not going to look for a handout.

Our heart surgeons
vetinarians
doctors
brain surgeons
scientist
oncologist
the list goes on
Do you know the average student loans and the amount of time these amazing people had to spend becoming who they are! Obama wants to tax these people more?! Why so that the people who make less because they chose to make less.....can get a hand out! I dont think so...its ridiculous!
75% voted for Obama because of the ECONOMY! Being the major issue.
This economy is the way it is because of the AMERICAN people black and white. The government didnt do this, and they cant fix it, we are way too far behind in debt. The economy will have to fix itself. Those who took out 500K mortgages...who make 60K a year..thats your own stupidity. Those of you who used your credit cards and bought cars you couldnt afford thats all you! The people are to blame not the government, no one wants to take responsibilities for their own actions. We all vote OBAMA because we NEED change...Change what???????? The AMerican people were too blinded to see from the start that they were ruining the economy with their own actions are now all voting for Obama......
so he can be a miracle and save you from drowning in your own debt.....

I do not overspend, I am not on welfare and I obviously didn't CHOOSE to get a job with low income... Its the job I could find and I took it. AND Im sorry but 100k-250 is no low income at least in my eyes. I bought a house at the age of 24 here on LI and my Husband and I work DAMN HARD for it!

I've even heard comments as dumb as "I don't love Obama - but I don't want 4 more years of Bush". WTH? I don't want to get into the socialized medicine debate, but good luck finding a good doctor if that happens. All the one's I talk to say they'll be forced out of medicine if this happens... and I'm not talking small potato internists... I'm talking major specialists at renouned hospitals. While it may work in other places, it won't work here.
Want a solution... force insurance companies to go non-profit. At least the drug companies put money into research... the insurance companies only put money into their CEO's wallet.
I like the email that went around that basically said - give your waiter's tip to the homeless man who needs it more. I think that's where the other posters were going. Instead of giving the cash to those who worked for it (waiter) give it to the guy sitting there not working (who needs it more). I don't believe in distributing wealth... and trust me - I'm in the rears... but I know I put myself there... I don't blame anyone else. I also don't feel that my money should go to half the stuff it does. It should go to me and my family - that's it.

I know a lot of waitresses that deserve their money as much as an anyone... I ALSO know of some doctors that abuse the system... it goes both ways...

Howard Stern had something on his program where this guy was talking to people in Harlem, asking them who they were voting for. He tricked them by saying, "Do you feel comfortable with his pro-life stance?" "Are you happy with his choice of VP, Sarah Palin?" He talked to about 3 different people who just yessed him to death, and didn't even notice he was talking about the McCain/Palin ticket.
I don't think this is a fair representation of the African American race...but there will be ignorant voters, as always.
Just as there will be, sadly, ignorant voters who will vote for McCain so that there will not be an African American president.

AMEN! Change what??? He throws that word around - primarily to catch the young. The best thing to change things would be for banks not to offer credit to every Joe, **** and Harry. And you know what - I'm one of those idiots they offered to much credit to in college when I had NO job! I have debt, and I know I'll be working until they pound that last nail into my coffin b/c of it... but I dont expect anyone to bail me out!

so many new young, many black voters and for that fact, many people that havn't voted in years came back to vote.
race played a little role but we are still the minority in this country. obama still needed the white vote, spanish vote, young vote, etc...
at the obama ralley in chicago, the crowd was 50/50 black and white...the way it should be cause color should have nothing to do with it.
i my self being black don't look at situations where i have less of a chance to succed in life. when i was young, sure i had a few negative actions because of my color but over the past 20 years, this world has changed.
now if we can stop labeling the difference between black and white, we can truely act as 1 united country.

They were too young in 2000 and 2004... this 50,000 is most likely new young voters, yes some people might have voted for Obama b/c of his race the same way they might have voted for McCain b/c of his race...
Also... I feel like last night when they were doing the polls, Race really didn't play a huge factor in this...
Obama won 349 electoral votes... Thats a LOT of states coming together to unite... that is White Woman, White men, African American Woman, African American Men, Mexicans, Asians etc... thats AMERICA coming together for a change.

Definitley. However, I'd like to think black voters as a whole were more educated and involved than ever before.
I am sure some voted purely on a racial standpoint, but there's nothing wrong with that view either.

Why do you think they didn't vote? They never felt like they had a voice. They never felt like they had someome to represent them. It's no mystery. Aside from the fact that I beleive in his policies, I also loved the fact that we would elect a black president; that alone to me signified the social progress we've made over 300 years, that it should have happened long ago, that we are finally moving FORWARD instead of staying the past, breaking down barriers, being a beacon of progress and social change.
