Re: Spinoff to salary thread
DH and I are both in the IT field. Tech jobs can be very tough and draining, but they are lucrative.
There are SO few women in programming, which is weird to me-- one good thing about this type of work is, I'm 99% certain I could work out a deal with my employer to work from home some or even all of the time, if I had a baby and felt like working afterwards.
Also it's easy to pick up a little consulting work, if you were a mom and just wanted to make a little extra cash. In the first few years of my career, I did side work like that in addition to my f/t job. After I got married though I got lazy and dropped the side clients

Re: Spinoff to salary thread
Hopefully when FI has a few years on the job, he'll surpass me - but that will have to include lots of OT. FI is in the NYS Trooper Academy and I'm a fund-raising consultant (my company is a for-profit, but we consult to non-profits). Combined, we're very comfortable.
If one of you is considering a career shift, I'd also mention that FI made awesome money when he worked in construction (for a large firm). It was very hard work, but the pay was there (he's actually taken a pay cut as he's working through the trooper academy).

FH and I are definetly going to struggle, neither of us make a good deal of money, I'm a Catholic school teacher and he is a graphic artist...
I was just wondering, for those of you making good money in a year... maybe over $70k or so, what kind of work do you or FH do? You don't have to say what you make, I'm just wondering if one of us should start looking into different fields of work!!
DH is an automotive technician for a large dealership.
My salary is miniscule compared to his, and I am in magazine distribution.

Re: Spinoff to salary thread
Al's a mechanical engineer working in the medical device field, and I'm a real estate appraiser
We're fortunate that Al works from home a lot and I have my own business - we haven't sacrified ourselves for the $$ and we don't have a commute to deal with.
I used to work in financial services (also making over $70K) but I hated it.
