Spinoff to to Opinion post -- why do you think breastfeeding is heavily promoted?
Or even -- do you think breastfeeding is heavily promoted? For all the groaning about "pressure" to breastfeed well over 70% of babies are on formula by 6 months. Bottle-feeding is sill the norm -- you see babies and bottles everywhere, but rarely see a breastfeeding mom.
I just think it's curious because no one makes $$ off of breastfeeding. In fact, large formula companies stand to loose $$ if more women choose to breastfeed, yet there's a push to make breastfeeding more mainstream.
Why do you think that is?

Probably b/c of the benefits to both the mother and child. It must be working b/c there was an article in the paper that said bf rates are at there highest. I think also that it supposedly decreases the chances of getting allergies, asthma, etc., which increase health care costs - this is a theory - probably not a good one!

Re: Spinoff to to Opinion post -- why do you think breastfeeding is heavily promoted?
Research has pointed in direction of health benefits for mother and child. BUt 20 years ago they were pushing formula and saying bf'ing was bad. My mother wanted to bf'd me and was told my doc's and nurses and peds that bf'ing wasnt' the best nutrition for me, FF was better, formula was best, it's been like that for ages! Enfamil and Similac have been around for many many many decades.
research changed, and now that's the new push.
BUT as a BF'd and FF mommy, at the end of the day, I don't care as long as my baby is thriving, growing and happy.

I think there is a push to breastfeed & to formula feed.
Depending on which side of the fence you sit, you can see the pushiness of either side.

I totally agree that is seems to be on which side of the fence you are on - I BF but at the hospital they were pushing me to formula feed - I had to ask repeatedly for an LC to ask some questions, they sent me home with a ton of formula. Even my ped who told me repeatedly that DD was thriving would ask when and if I was supplementing.
Now I bet anything if I wanted to give formula I would have had the opposite experience and would have have BF pushed on me.

Re: Spinoff to to Opinion post -- why do you think breastfeeding is heavily promoted?
Honestly, I think it's a psycological game that they play. Formula makers send out the message that it's BEST to BF, providing all the facts of why breast is best BUT that theirs is second best.
Now, if you are a woman who tries to BF and does not succeed for whatever rason, wouldn't you want the *next best thing?* Of course you do, and the formula companies are thriving because of it.

I couldn't' agree with this more. When I delivered I felt like there was all this stupid pressure on me from everyone to BF... I GET IT... BUT IT DOESN'T WORK FOR ALL OF US... and I hate being made to feel like a failure because I supplement with formula. Whatever. As Theresa05 would say... Pfffffft!! My baby eats and is growing and is healthy and happy.

Maybe it has something to do with "Go Green"!
I don't know why it would be advertised if no one is making money (except for lactation consultants). I remember getting How-to BF booklets from Enfamil with coupons included. That doesn't really make much sense.

There is NO DOUBT that it IS the most healthy thing you can do for yourself and your child. I mean, lets face it, anything "natural" is better than what is in a bottle on a shelf in a store.
That being said I tried it for 3 weeks and it is HARD work and I was upset that I stopped.
But...my son is happy and healthy on formula. There is no wrong way to go.

i agree too.
we have debated this topic ad nauseum. all BF vs FF threads invariably degenerate into the same discussion, which ends in misunderstandings, misinterpretations, and hurt feelings.
i don't mean to target you individually. i'm expressing frustration in general at all of these threads over the last couple days.

I am willing to bet that business and insurance companies have something to do with this. I think health insurance companies are much more powerful than formula manufacturers.Call me cynical but that is JMO.

I have my own thoughts, but I wonder what other people think. I think it is a health issue, but I find it interesting that some doctors promote breastfeeding, others could care less. I also think that most trends in our society are market-driven, but this is one that actually goes against large companies, so I find it unusual.

Re: Spinoff to to Opinion post -- why do you think breastfeeding is heavily promoted?
Because hands down it's better. I don't care what anyone thinks, it's been proven. Not that formula is "bad" but BM is better, that's all. There are huge benefits to mom as well with breastfeeding.
This comes from a mom who much again my wishes had to use formula because I couldn't make enough milk for DD despite all of my efforts. We had to use both and it was not what I wanted but you do what you have to do. I am still very sad about my BFing experience and hope by some miracle hope to EBF #2 and not have to pump and bottle feed.

I have to agree....I respect everything you write and say, but you are the first to provide info about the benefits of breastfeeding and extended breastfeeding etc...so why you are asking this, I'm not quite sure. To hear the many facts over why BM is superior to formula spewed back? Sorry, I just don't get it.

I agree. I was kind of thinking the same thing. FF's often complain the BF is pushed on them and BF's often feel formula is pushed on them. I think what we feel pressured to do is often a product of our own perception.
As a BF mother I could feel alienated by all the formula ads about how great formula is or all the ads showing babies with bottles. Personally, I don't, but it's easy to see how someone could. Same way a FF could feel alienated by reading an article about breastfeeding. I think it's difficult on both sides of the fence if you let it get to you.

For some reason I don't think a successfully BF'ing mom looks at formula ads and thinks how great it is...but..I could be wrong.
If anything I could understand a breastfeeding mom feeling strained and not wanting to continue b/c of time or feeling like a slave to the boob, or "wanting her body back" (as lots of bf'ing moms have said) etc...so I can see the temptation in switching to formula, but I don't think they think how "great" formula is.

I actually don't agree with "no one makes money off of breastfeeding." The pump makers and breast milk storage bag companies do (Medela, etc.) If a working mom decides to breastfeed they will eventually have to pump and all the supplies to do that cost $$$

True, some smaller companies do make $$ off of pumps and more and more bottle manufacturers are advertising bottles to appeal to breastfeeders. But, these are small potatoes compared to the big formula companies.

I think we see those ads and see that as the cultural norm, which makes it appealing. Also the ads tout the benefits of formula, which make it seem even more appealing.
ETA: Because the ads hold it up as the cultural norm, BF mothers could feel pressured or alienated by those ads.

Re: Spinoff to to Opinion post -- why do you think breastfeeding is heavily promoted?
In the end all that matters is that the baby is fed and nourished. How that happens is none of anyone's business. Both FF and BF accomplish the end goal, so there is really nothing to debate here.
