Re: Spinoff to When Flying.. Are you afraid to fly?
Posted by july06bride
No, we fly often and I enjoy it- because it means I am going somewhere!. What I dislike about flying is the HORRIFIC pain that I feel in my ears- it feels like someone is stabbing my ears with knives!
I hate that too. I always know when we start descending b/c I have horrible pressure in my ears. I use ear planes (supposed to reduce the pressure), chew gum, etc. Although these things help a little, I'm in a lot of pain (my ears down through my neck) during the landing.
I'm also afraid to fly, but it doesn't prevent me from flying. Turbulence really freaks me out even though I know it's a common part of flying.

I am exactly the same. Mostly it started after 9/11 although I don't worry about highjackings more mechanical problems or pilot error I will not let it stop me from flying but then I also think...is this just nerves or intuition?
You are explaining the same feeling I have..
me too

Re: Spinoff to When Flying.. Are you afraid to fly?
I hate flying by myself, and have to often for work. I am not "scared" but more like I hoping I make it back home in one piece When I am with DH or someone else that thought doesnt cross my mind.

Re: Spinoff to When Flying.. Are you afraid to fly?
I'm afraid of take-off and landing. I hold onto whatever I can for dear life.
While we're in the air, though, I'm fine.
Although, sometimes while we're up there, I'll think "Wow -this is so un-natural to be flying up so high in a man-made object" or "What if we run out of gas" or "What the hell am I doing up here? I sholud have driven"
So I guess, yeah, I'm afraid, but only a little.
(I chose "other", though)

not at all! I admit that I get anxious when the plane is taking off - I say a little prayer. but after about 1 minute I am fine.

It honetly depends on my mood. During take-off I am especially squeamish.
If the flight is turbulance free I am fine. But the slightest bumps I start to get tense. BAD turbulance and I am FREAKING OUT
i read that no one has ever died from turbulence...a plane coming down from turbulence is almost unheard of... so if that mames you feel better...remember that..
That's great to know. I feel out when we hit turbulence. I'm not a fan of flying I hate taking off soo much, landing I can somewhat handle but only because I know we are almost there.

Re: Spinoff to When Flying.. Are you afraid to fly?
I'm afraid, and it does inhibit me. I have not been on a plane since I was 8. I was fine on that trip too. I think it has just been a while, and if I flew again I would be fine afterwards. It's just that now I get anxiety attacks and am affraid of having one on the plane.

Re: Spinoff to When Flying.. Are you afraid to fly?
I am not afriad at all! If it happens, it happens - its out of my hands. I am not going to let a fear keep me from traveling somewhere.
Now on the other hand, I do get very nauseous and sick when flying.

I hate flying, especially take off & landing, once in the air, I'm OK. I honestly try to avoid flying if at all possible, but I'll do it in the sake of having a great vacation I wish I didn't have this fear
This is me exactly!

Re: Spinoff to When Flying.. Are you afraid to fly?
I'm afraid. It's never prevented me from going anywhere, but I was very, very relieved when we decided to do a driving vacation last summer. And since we have a baby on the way, I don't know when we'll fly again. And that's ok with me.
For some reason, I've found myself much more afraid, to the point where it really would influence my travel plans.

Re: Spinoff to When Flying.. Are you afraid to fly?
I am petrified to fly.
I will not go on a plane.
I have not been on a plane since 1 week prior to 9/11. I have not flown since.
I cannot bring myself to go on a plane.
Flying is my biggest fear.

I'm scared to fly, that's why I make it a point to fly every couple of months. The more time that goes by in between flights, the worse I am the next time I do get on a plane. I can never become one of those people that don't go anywhere because of the fear. I love Europe and the caribbean too much!
I think my fear has been magnified by an emergency landing we had to make on a Delta flight many years ago. The pilot was not exactly reassuring in his announcement and when we landed there was emergency equipment lining the runway. We were delayed for like six hours and then had to get back on the same plane. Not fun!
I would NEVER get on the same plane. Were you freaking out? I flew on a plane once where they were deicing the wings about 20 times before we took off. Thats real reassuring

Re: Spinoff to When Flying.. Are you afraid to fly?
I am a nervous flier..it doesn't stop me from going anywhere, but I squeeze DH's hand so tight during takeoff and landing that i almost cut off his circulation, and I start getting panicky when there's any turbulance.

Yes, I was majorly freaking out! I was a teenager at the time and I was flying with my parents. I begged my mom to find us a flight on another airline, but she kept saying "they are going to check this plane through and through, this is probably the safest plane in the entire airport right now!" I wasn't buying it. And basically hyperventilated when I got back on. Thank god it was only a two-hour flight from Florida.

Nope - not afraid to fly. I just get pissy when I'm in the air and I start focusing on people coughing, sneezing... It grosses me out!

Re: Spinoff to When Flying.. Are you afraid to fly?
Yes I am. I have flown a lot, but I still get a scared. I take long flights (18+ hours) often and I still get scared. I had a rough flight last week that makes me even more scared, b/c I have to get on a flight to Australia next week.
My sister is terrified and just last week she was going to fly and meet my mother and me in Georgia for my uncle's funeral. She had a panic attack right in that thing that you walk on to get on the plane and turned around. She couldnt go on alone. The airline was really nice and she got her money back minus the $60 fee and she was allowed to transfer her tickets to someone else. I dont think she will be getting on a plane any time soon...
Laguardia has fear of flying classes for $40 each class. In each class they have a different speaker (pilots, engineers, etc) and that helps explain all those little noises and everything that goes on during a flight.
ETA- I always take Xanax for flights.
