Re: SPINOFF: Where to live outside of Long Island
We moved to CT last October, and we LOVE it here! We are in Madison, on the shoreline in New Haven County. Great schools, sense of community, tons of families with kids, we have our kids in an amazing day care center, beautiful downtown, and back in LI in 2 hours!

I live in Rockaway Beach in Queens. Belle Harbor and Neponsit are great, and we don't pay Nassau co taxes.

Jersey or upstate
In Jersey - I have friends in Marlboro, Matawan, Lincroft - all really nice.
Upstate - Not sure of specific towns, DH has friends up there though
Most of Jersey is not cheaper than LI. Most parts are just as expensive or even more expensive as LI. You'd if you knew what we pay in taxes where I live.

Orange County, NY.
ITA
how long is the drive from LI and hows the school districts?
depending where u are in orange county and LI, can be alittle over an hour to 4+ hours. Good school districts are tuxedo, monroe woodbury, warwick, goshen, and cornwall, Stay away from newburgh and middletown. Tuxedo (very expensive though) and Monroe school district are prob the "closest" to LI (the towns that go to the monroe woodbury school districts are harriman, monroe and highland Mills-all those towns are right by the woodbury commons) HTH
we get from my aunt's house in Lloyd Harbor to my house, (a few miles outside of Middletown ) in about 2 hours. and we are closer to Sullivan than to the Rockland border.
my husband can get to his clients in Plainview from our house in 1h 45 min.
but if you go to the areas closer to Woodbury Commons, you'll shave 20 minutes off of the estimates.
we paid just under 300k for our house. we pay about 4k in taxes a year. we have .5 acres of land (which is enough for us. you can get considerably more up here)
I am not from LI so admittedly I didn't get wrapped uo in the whole "school district" thing, but our district is nice enough if I end up sending my son there. I am definitely not worried. there are a few different districts that serve the Middletown area, which encompasses more than just the city of Middletown (ours is Pine Bush).
all residents have the Woobury Commons outlet to thank for our relatively low taxes. and my town specifically, Wallkill, was touted to us by residents of being very tough when it comes to taxes and waste.
we really love our area and our house.
