Spring Break and School
Has your child's school notified you if they are planning on doing home instruction during spring break? Or are they planning on actually taking spring break?

Spring Break and School
We were notified on Tuesday that all remote learning will continue during the scheduled spring break. That said, they also told us the remote learning would be review and enrichment.

Re: Spring Break and School
So for the first 2 weeks of school being closed we did nothing- no remote learning, nothing.
They said that the first week was to be snow days and superintendent conference days and the second week would be our Spring Break- moved up from the week of the 6th. (I assume they needed those 2 weeks to get everything up and running for remote learning)
So in essence we already got our spring break last week.
We started remote learning on Monday and will continue it during what would have been our spring break next week.

Re: Spring Break and School
We are having spring break which is both good and bad. I may continue to have my kids do some work during the break just to get ahead a little and so they aren't bored out of their minds.

i think cuomo took away the week, but left thursday and friday? that's what i've been seeing online but not sure. we haven't received anything from the school yet so i'm pretending we're still having break. i need it, my kid needs it, and i don't think they should be taking it away.

I feel like it should 100% be up to the individual districts. My district clearly isn't following what Cuomo said because we had our break already. Now what?? He should stay out of it.

I agree. Each district needs to assess individually.

That's pretty much my plan. Our district hasn't said anything explicitly, but even if they don't give out assignments, I'm still going to have my two doing schoolwork.

i'm the opposite. my DS is a perfectionist and neurotic over his grades. I want the week so he can relax and chill. We'll still read and write for fun, but with no deadlines or grades so he can breathe a little.

Oh i would have totally done that too if we had are spring break next week as scheduled. But we had it last week. (no remote learning was given to us until this past Monday) But yeah if were doing remote since schools first closed, I'd want her to have a break too

Re: Spring Break and School
We won't get Spring Break. Our district said the Governor said no one gets Spring Break. But, we have been doing remote learning since week 1. So we are 3 weeks in. Many districts just started this week, and used their Spring Break and snow days for those first two weeks. I'm annoyed. Very annoyed. The kids deserve a break from the work.

yeah that is not right. Because like you said- some districts- like mine- already had it. So now you are having some districts with no break and others that had it. Again, the Governor should keep his nose out of how the districts handle this. The only thing he should be concerned with is that they are closed for as long as he says. Period. The end.

Spring Break and School
To be eligible for state funding, schools must provide schooling during spring break so therefore all districts must comply by offering instruction to students.
I do believe however that my students need a break.

This is gonna be the issue with the districts that already had a spring break. Technically, according to the new rule, they are no longer eligible for state funding. It is going to be interesting to see how this plays out for those districts that already had a break.

We got an email last night that the kids will be getting Spring Break off. We've also been doing work since the day schools closed. The kids deserve the break.

I think in the current situation they need to bend that rule a bit. Jesus Christ it's a fuking pandemic and they are holding schools hostage for funding over a few days? Trust me, these kids are barely learning a thing anyway while at home. Give it a rest!

Spring Break and School
Our school board voted to amend the calendar and made this week the school break. They anticipated school resuming on 4/6 but when all that changed I think everything went out the window so we have google assignments through 4/9. This whole situation is awful. We are already underprivileged and underfunded. Teachers spent their own money to buy chrome books for the low income students and still had to make a go fund me to raise $$ for additional laptops. Also I was told off the record by an employee of a school nearby that the rest of this years grades will not count, but they are not telling the parents...

We will not have a break but the work for next week should be light and children will not be penalized for not doing an assignment for religious reasons. I personally have no issue with this. No one can go anywhere anyway so it might as well be used to fill up the kids days a little bit.

The state made the decision that schools will remain as learning and not break. The districts do not get a choice in this.

Yeah I actually just looked it up and it is the State Department of Education that mandated this. Not so sure how much the governor had to do with the actual decision. Our district hasn't said anything about it but we have a BOE meeting tonight so I assume it will be addressed then.

Spring Break and School
Our kids started remote learning on day 1 (3/16/20) and I have no problem with them doing work over Spring Break. Granted they’re young, but they do “work” M-F from 9-noon and then are done for the day to play outside or chat on their iPads. They can survive without the week off.

Yep. The work she is doing is nonsense right now anyway. half the time we can't even submit it because it doesn't work right. They say print it to bring in when we return. It's all nonsense and busy work.

It's also an issue for the teachers though. It is in their contract to have a certain numbers of days off & not all of the schools closed early on. It is weird for the state to say all schools must skip spring break when it was up to the districts to decide if they were taking time off to transition to remote learning. They already said the schools didn't have to meet the 180 rule.
