Our kids started remote learning on day 1 (3/16/20) and I have no problem with them doing work over Spring Break. Granted they’re young, but they do “work” M-F from 9-noon and then are done for the day to play outside or chat on their iPads. They can survive without the week off.

It's also an issue for the teachers though. It is in their contract to have a certain numbers of days off & not all of the schools closed early on. It is weird for the state to say all schools must skip spring break when it was up to the districts to decide if they were taking time off to transition to remote learning. They already said the schools didn't have to meet the 180 rule.

My union has already said this. Our contract states a max of 184 days and this puts us over.

Spring Break and School

I'm in NYC and we, teachers, only had 1 day off, then returned fur 3 days of "training" (which taught me nothing about Google classrooms... Thanks YouTube!) And a conference day on that Friday. We were looking g forward to time off because the amount of work we are putting into this new way of teaching is MUCH more than if we just went to work.

So it sucks not to get that break. But I understand why he made the decision. And where are we going anyway, lol?

I just hope that this doesn't set a precedent that contracts can be overruled at any time. Right now, it's crisis time. I get it. Everyone is stepping up and doing more than what is expected.

And I've already had parents tell me they will not be online that week. I don't know where THEY are going, lol, but maybe they are just going to concentrate on being together as a family. And in my classroom, the week before a vacation is not a typical week. We do different work anyway so it will be no exception then too.

Spring Break and School

My niece is in a Jewish private school. They are having a break because it's also Passover and no school is allowed for several days. Their break begins after school today.

They also were doing online school from around March 11th because someone was at the school who tested positive so they just closed the schools.

I'm trying to be very understanding and patient with our school and our teachers because for the most part I'm not thrilled with the level of communication. But it's comments like these that really rub me the wrong way.

Re: Spring Break and School

We are not in NY, spring break there will be no work assigned. This has been the 1st week of official remote learning, but nothing is graded. Next week will be the 1st week of new learning and grading.

I am proud of how the teachers and admin have come together to make this all work. The smaller, private schools here had an easier time getting everything set up than the larger districts, but I think it is all working the best it can.

We won't get Spring Break. Our district said the Governor said no one gets Spring Break. But, we have been doing remote learning since week 1. So we are 3 weeks in. Many districts just started this week, and used their Spring Break and snow days for those first two weeks. I'm annoyed. Very annoyed. The kids deserve a break from the work.

I saw this, but I wonder if private schools are exempt from Cuomo's order? My DD goes to a Catholic school and they are still taking the week and a half of spring break as planned.

Okay, I never even said that my union was doing anything about being over. They just noted that it was over the 184 contractual days in their weekly newsletter. I personally have no issue with doing a few extra days but I know many will.

I’m sorry your district is doing a poor job. My son’s teacher, who is older and has never used technology, has really stepped up to the plate - granted the first week was a bit of a disaster.

For my classes, I am in constant communication with both students and parents. I send out daily emails, record daily lessons, and have live office hours. I am also in virtual CSE meetings and department meetings. My students most likely need a break more than I do. Many are having a very difficult time with this.

Same here. Our teachers are not “live” so I can’t see why posting assignments over Spring Break would interfere so badly with their scheduled days off.
Honestly, keeping the kids engaged will only help for next year. It’s already going to be a shitshow, but having them think a little bit every day is a good thing.

really shouldn't be a big deal though i wouldn't mind the break. I am working full time from home so for one of my kids i struggle to get the work done cause they need me to sit with them and I dont have the time and my DH is working out of the house. I actually wrote the principal and told her at rate I am considering holding them back next year!

I feel strongly about teachers complaining regarding anything about time off and having to work after their work day. Actually had it out with a friend over this.

I appreciate teachers i do. I know they have a hard job but lets be real they get so much time off and in the corporate world there a plenty of people on salary that dont get paid extra and dont have nearly as much time off and work extra hours constantly without extra pay

I dont begrudge teachers for their time off listen the picked a great job! I just dont think they should complain about extra hours/days they work and if they want to complain they are better off not doing it in public forum like facebook etc

I'm sorry, that was not directed specifically at you. It's meant for anyone who felt it was appropriate to mention, at a time like this, exactly how many days they are required to work.

Many of us are barely holding onto jobs AND now we're doing the day-to-day work of the teachers, often with far less communication and direction than we feel necessary. And we're doing this while simultaneously having to do our actual jobs. So if teachers decide that they are the only ones who don't have to pitch in a little extra there is going to be extreme backlash. We are ALL working overtime in this crisis.

Same.

We took a Superintendent's Conference day for the first day after school closed and then two snow days prior to starting though.

I understand not wanting to take the whole spring break as it is pretty long but, a few days to regroup would be nice.

We had another snow day left too which we have now forfeited as per the governor.

And I really think we are not going back to school at all this year.

This is gonna be the issue with the districts that already had a spring break. Technically, according to the new rule, they are no longer eligible for state funding. It is going to be interesting to see how this plays out for those districts that already had a break.

I think in the current situation they need to bend that rule a bit. Jesus Christ it's a fuking pandemic and they are holding schools hostage for funding over a few days? Trust me, these kids are barely learning a thing anyway while at home. Give it a rest!

I totally agree that rules need to be bent at this time! Our district started online instruction from from day 1. We used 2 snow days for the teachers to prepare but then started. We were told yesterday that we will be working through the break. I was really looking forward to a little time off of school work.
My husband teaches in a different district and they are also teaching through the break and he learned from his principal that it looks like they may be remote teaching and extending the school year until the 2nd week in July. Needless to say he's pissed.

Wait- if they have been remote teaching and not even getting the spring break, why on earth would they have to teach into July?
For what purpose?

Our school board voted to amend the calendar and made this week the school break. They anticipated school resuming on 4/6 but when all that changed I think everything went out the window so we have google assignments through 4/9. This whole situation is awful. We are already underprivileged and underfunded. Teachers spent their own money to buy chrome books for the low income students and still had to make a go fund me to raise $$ for additional laptops. Also I was told off the record by an employee of a school nearby that the rest of this years grades will not count, but they are not telling the parents...

My husband teaches middle school and was told that they could not use anything done during this time against a child. If their work helps improve their grades they can use it. If it decreases their grade, it will not be counted.

That's funny because we used all our snow days up the first week we were closed.
So what's the governor going to do now- come after us?
Again, he should focus on other things.
Leave the education to the experts.

I really have no idea! I think they feel that the level of instruction is not the same obviously as being in a real classroom. I just know that was told to him and they mentioned there may be no summer school or camp run through the school due to this. This is really going to screw up a lot of people if non-essential workers are okayed to go back to work but camps are closed.

They need to chalk the 3rd trimester of this year up as a loss and move on.
Stop torturing people.
They will all survive without a few months of nonsense remote work that doesn't even count towards grades anyway
Ridiculous

My kids go to catholic school in nyc. They have been doing remote learning since school closed. Our principal sent a message saying that we will be having break as usual. I can see both sides but my middle schoolers especially find it to be a lot of tedious work and are grateful for the break.

That's easier to say for the younger years than it is for the older kids. My son is only in 6th grade but he was on track to do 9th grade honors math next year. He needs the next three months of learning to stay on track for that or it will mess up the entire track for honors students that is set up in our district. I know that compared to what other people are going thru, this concern is relatively inconsequential, however there are a lot of circumstances like this in the older grades that will need to be addressed. For my 2nd and 4th graders I really don't care, I don't think they really cover that much important material during the school day so as long as they are reading and doing some math I think it's fine. You just can't really apply the same rules to a 2nd grader and say a 9th or 10th grader.

I teach at at Catholic high school and my kids go to Catholic school...two in elementary and one in high school. We are all having a spring break, but at my oldest daughter’s school, the teachers have an option of assigning a project dur after the break as opposed to daily work.

Side note: I’m not sure who’s getting nonsense busy work; that’s really a shame. I don’t think you can do that long-term like this. My kids have all had meaningful projects and in many cases, real-time instruction. I teach five classes and am continuing my regular curriculum (bit of a challenge reading Romeo & Juliet remotely!) with a combination of group chats, video chats, and reading, etc. In fact, their formal research papers are due next week. Same here. I believe we have spoken about Catholic schools before, I remember you recommending the one your children go to. I teach in a Catholic school 5 minutes away from yours. My kids go to a catholic school on LI. There hasn't really been any busy work. I live teach, post videos that introduce new lessons, tests are submitted for grading, my 1st grader still has to do his famous person biography. We do have our spring break.
I am shocked at the amount of schools doing nothing but busy work.
