Staffing shortages
Do you think that stopping the extra unemployment money would help with these shortages?
Seems like every day I see small businesses struggling due to shortages. Restaurants closing two days a week or only open for dinner. Amusement parks (large ones too like six flags and camelback) only open a couple days a week. Even Ralph’s ices can’t get all their flavors because they have staff shortages for the people who actually make the ices.
Many of these jobs are held by younger people who I can’t blame making more or close to what they would be making to sit back and relax for the summer. Or moms who can make close to what they did and spend time with their kids (personal friend who is doing this). We’re not talking the breadwinner of the family who was making six figures and now is out a job. I’m talking those who were working 20-30 hours part time.
I feel so bad for those small businesses losing money and will hurt the economy more in the long run when we are just filled with Walmart’s with all self checkout and automated services.

Yes - I think it will help stop the shortages.
Right now you don't even have to prove you are looking for employment to collect. I collected a few years ago and I had to be actively looking was told I would no longer receive unemployment if I was offered a job at a certain dollar level (based on what I was making previously).

Absolutely. Why work when you are getting paid to stay home and no need to show you are actively looking.

Re: Staffing shortages
It's awful. I'm a member of a restaurant group on FB and restaurant owners, are literally BEGGING for help. Many have had to shut down 3 days a week due to lack of staff. Many have had to cut their hours of operation. A few of my favorite restaurants have done this actually. We were just out to dinner and a sign said...there is a staffing shortage, please be patient. People were waiting for tables and complaining that there were many open tables so why did they have to wair 30 minutes for a table? The answer, we can't operate at full capacity because we don't have enough servers. I feel horrible for restaurant owners. First the Covid shutdowns, then reduced capacity, then everything is finally lifted and they still can't get ahead. All that extra unemployment was supposed to be because there were no jobs due to Covid shutdowns. There are PLENTY of jobs now. They are begging for workers. Enough is enough

Staffing shortages
I don’t think it will change come September. I think there has been a reckoning of sorts in the restaurant industry. But we will see.

I agree. The restaurant industry is a shit industry. When you have been in it, then you know.

Sure. I don’t know what will happen obviously but I’ve read a variety of takes on it and the general view is that the extended unemployment payment doesn’t have an impact on staffing shortages.
Here is a recent piece in Forbes Link
People also have taken the time to learn new skills or pivot to a new career during this time. Even with non-service workers, some people who have started working remotely would like the option to keep it.
Ultimately, I think people will now expect to be paid their worth and expect better working conditions and work/life balance.
If come September people aren’t rushing to return to service work, employers will need to pay more or making their working conditions better. As of now, workers have the upper hand which hasn’t happened all that often in history.

Correct. It can be exploitative and has one of the highest rates of sexual harassment.

Until restaurants stop paying below minimum wage they are not getting their staff back.

Staffing shortages
People are getting $300 extra right? They stopped the $600?
I can’t really blame service workers one bit, even if I tried. No one in his or her right mind would just keep working at a pizza joint or something during a pandemic when you could use the time to acquire new skills to hopefully get something better in due time.
No one here would be serving fried mozzarella sticks at 10 pm versus getting the unemployment benefits.

The $600 stopped awhile ago. $300 now.
Maybe people enjoy that type of work. You make it sound like it is a menial job that no one wants and is degrading.

I want the workers to be paid fairly if they choose to return. The fact that some were able to get paid more then their usual earnings makes me happy.

Almost everyone was but that doesn’t mean they can continue at a job getting the same. Everyone wants people to get raises but don’t want the price of things to go up. Did you get a raise as I surely haven’t and won’t be able to afford to go out if they raise prices to eat and drink.

So basically some in society have to work for peanuts so others can afford to dine out. Sounds degrading.

My first thought is how tough it must be for the servers who are working. I’d imagine they have a lot of customers/irate lunatics on their hands.

Yes. I feel horrible for them. We've been tipping extra lately.

Maybe we should pay them a fair wage and eliminate tipping? Might solve the problem for restaurant owners. “Raise” the price to compensate for the removal of tips. If I’m still paying the same to go out what’s the difference.

So unemployment is $300 a week, biweekly of a month now? What if they have children?

Re: Staffing shortages
I do believe once unemployment stops people will have no choice to return to work. At least in NY unemployment benefits were extended come September everyone will loose them. Not sure how they plan on paying for anything if they don’t return to work??!!
I would love to know what being paid fairly means?
I do not think some jobs starting pay should Be higher salaries unless the plan is to raise the pay for all jobs in all industries. Sorry but someone starting off at McDonald’s should not be getting paid $15 an hour while someone who worked their butts off in either school or put years into a job gets paid less than that or the same. If people want more money they should work for it and like I already said higher pay is fine but all industries should bE doing it.
I also Believe if we raise the minimum wage cost-of-living will go up. Yes I do know prices are going up now but do we really think they won’t be going up even more if you raise the rages??? Do we really think these companies are going to just say ok we will make a little less now? How about small business owners who can’t afford it and will probably have no choice to raise prices?
