People are getting $300 extra right? They stopped the $600?
I can’t really blame service workers one bit, even if I tried. No one in his or her right mind would just keep working at a pizza joint or something during a pandemic when you could use the time to acquire new skills to hopefully get something better in due time.
No one here would be serving fried mozzarella sticks at 10 pm versus getting the unemployment benefits.
The $600 stopped awhile ago. $300 now.
Maybe people enjoy that type of work. You make it sound like it is a menial job that no one wants and is degrading.
So unemployment is $300 a week, biweekly of a month now? What if they have children?
It’s $300 a week on top of what you get from NYS.
What so u mean what u get from nys? How much do the give for unemployment? That’s based on a percentage of what you were making. It’s hard to figure out or at least I don’t understand it lol. But max pay is $504 a week.
Yes - it's a percentage of your weekly pay up to $504 (it was lower a few years back when I was collecting). So on top of that $504 - you would get an extra $300 a week right now (previously $600, and I believe before that it was $800).

When was the $800? As far as I know it was always $600 from March 2020. That is all my child was getting.

Yes. My kid gets over $400 right now. This is with taxes taken out.
How do you feel about your child taking unemployment? Do you encourage them to go get hired at one of the many places that say they have staffing shortages and can’t find anyone to work?

Staffing shortages
Maybe this will start teaching people to appreciate those employees with low paying jobs. Without them businesses will struggle. I really hope things change.

For the circumstances right now with moving and going to a new school and taking a very difficult summer college class, I am ok with it. If they were staying I would push them to get a job. This child takes no school breaks and it is more difficult for them to pass some classes so I would rather them spend those hours in the library studying.
They will have to get a job when they are moved though as this will end and I have no worries as they have worked since 16 and wants to work.

This is perfect example of people taking advantage of unemployment.
The reasons you listed are not reason to stay on unemployment. I have worked since i was 16 technically before that cause I babysat. Went to college full time and worked through out it. If I couldn’t handle working and going to school. I would have not worked and I would not have expected to be paid unemployment.
People want to believe that others aren’t taking advantage of unemployment but they are!! Things like the excuses above, I have read people saying they like to be home with their child and not work. Guess what so do all the other people that are working.
So yes some people really need it but others clearly are taking advantage of it. Which is why it needs to end now.

Again I never said I agreed fully but like I said there were circumstances and they did start looking around for jobs but then found about getting accepted and moving away. I think it is rude to take a job for a few months too and then leave. If my child was sitting on their ass and collecting and doing nothing else, I would not have allowed it. This “child” is also an adult for a few years so they also have to make decisions and the best choice for themselves.

Again still not right. There are plenty of jobs that offer summer work only. Plenty of college students come home work for the summer and leave. You should be upfront with the employer and let them decide. I am sure plenty of job right now will take just summer help. Maybe you should be encouraging him to get a job and not take advantage of unemployment. Especially since you seem to be so vocal about it but apparently it doesn’t apply to your child cause you think it’s justified.

But why not? If I was eligible I’d take advantage of it. They make it so easy. I’ve joked with my bosses to lay me off so I can spend time with my family. I can’t fault people for taking advantage of a broken system. NYS and the Federal government waste so much money on nonsense, instead fix the systems and make it so people can’t take advantage. Invest in the technology so people don’t make more than what they were while working. Make them WANT to work and feel the need to work.

Staffing shortages
WW’s response (which is cool that she answered) is in alignment with what I have read and what I was trying to say earlier. Many people have been using the time to focus on other things, acquire skills, and some of that includes education.

I get it. But I also can see where people would use it as an opportunity.
But people complain about staffing shortages but when it comes down to it, they’d do the very same thing or their loved one.

They won’t be here all summer nor have been. This is not taking advantage and this child has a better work ethic than many adults, since they were 16. They ALWAYS had a job until their job shut for corona. You can try and attack but maybe go after the people who can truly work but are sitting around doing nothing but collecting money. At that point how about going after people on welfare not trying?

I am against what? I have said they should stop the extra so people will go back to work and not make more sitting at home.
The job my child would have is not in a restaurant if that satisfies you as that is not the jobs they usually have and wouldn’t be their first choice. They actually try and work in places that will help them in the future with a career. Not all of their jobs as like I said they have worked quite a few years but that it the main goal when you get older.

Stop making excuses he is taking advantage. At least admit it. You can admit you are being hypocritical right now. Cause that’s what you are being. And I will go after all those on welfare. I am against anyone who takes advantage of the system. I am ok with those who truly need it not those who want to take advantage! (Which your son is 100% doing)

Still excuses. If you need money you work where you can. Even if it’s not your first choice. Especially while you are in college. I worked in a food store ans I am doing just fine in my career. You can say nothing that justifies your son taking advantage. Cause he is at least admit it. That’s what annoying right now that your saying what people are doing is wrong but he is doing it also. Didn’t realize he is to good to work in a restaurant or anywhere else if he needs the money

very simple way to determine if he's taking advantage. If he was not collecting unemployment would he be looking for a job?
also wanted to point out, some people who are on unemployment are still not looking for work because of childcare. with no full time school (in nyc) and very few summer camps, they have no choice but to stay home with their kids. that's why they haven't taken away the extra unemployment. i get LI had full school for a while, but NYC has yet to go back.

How do you feel about your child taking unemployment? Do you encourage them to go get hired at one of the many places that say they have staffing shortages and can’t find anyone to work?
I would have not worked and I would not expected to be pain unemployment.
People want to believe that others aren’t taking advantage of unemployment but they are!! Things like the excuses above I have read people saying the like to be home with their child and not work. Guess what so do all the other people that are working.
So yes some people really need it but others clearly are taking advantage of it. Which is why it needs to end now
Again I never said I agreed fully but like I said there were circumstances and they did start looking around for jobs but then found about getting accepted and moving away.
Stop making excuses he is taking advantage. At least admit it. You can admit you are being hypocritical right now. Cause that’s what you are being. And I will go after all those on welfare. I am against anyone who takes advantage of the system. I am ok with those who truly need it not those who want to take advantage! (Which your son is 100% doing)
So now my child doesn’t need the money that is given when you are out of a job. Money they make to give them the amount they get on unemployment?
If they were taking away a job that could go to an adult with a family or someone else’s unemployment, I could see the issue. Why does this bother you so much?

It’s like you haven’t heard anything I have said. They can not work right now because of the process of moving so no summer job can be done. Why take a job that you would have to quit for a month or two when someone with a family or who truly needs it can have it?

It’s like you refuse to admit your son is taking advantage. You also said he isn’t working to concentrate on work and that he deserves a break. So do others who are continuing to work.
I’m not losing sleep over this but I find it funny that you can’t admit your son is doing exactly What others are doing that you are saying is wrong!!!
ETA: and you trying to justify it by saying. Your son is saving jobs for someone who needs to job more is even more of a joke

I said my child deserves a break? Where?
You are making a story in your head to try and justify how bad unemployment is.

Sorry tou are correct you didn’t say deserves a break you said he takes no break and you rather him study then have job. Which is fine but doesn’t mean he should collect unemployment. So instead of making excuses in your head to why our think he isn’t taking advantage you should probably accept he is taking advantage and you are being hypocritical.

Thank you as I know I didn’t say that. This child has worked through high school and college so it is not a foreign concept and something that they have not been able to do. Like I said because of the circumstances right now moving they can’t work but as soon as they are settled in, they know they will have to as there are now adult bills to be paid. Funny as while I was with them at their new place they were asking in all the places we went to if they were hiring. This one is a go getter and is not shy. My other one works but was never as active as the older with clubs and jobs and such. I am glad though that they both want to work and have that ambition. I could not deal with someone who just sits around getting unemployment or welfare or such.

Re: Staffing shortages
We just stayed at Greenport for three days and two nights just this past week, and about 90% of the stores and restaurants all had help wanted signs for all different types of job opportunities.
