Stork for lawn?

I kind of remember learning in Lamaze class when I was PG with DD that it is not a good idea to get one of these but I can't remember the rationale behind the teacher discouraging it. I didn't get one when my DD was born, but now I think I want to get it this time around. I just feel like this is probably my last baby and we haven't done anything for this one (no maternity photos, no 3D sono, no shower) and I just want to celebrate him or her somehow.

What is everybody's opinion or knowledge on this subject?

I didn't get one with #1 nor will I with #2. I believe the thought process is that people (not good ones) know that you have just had a baby that if there are new items in the home (gifts, etc) and that the chance for you to not be home (while at hospital) and/or for you to be home alone with child and makes it easier to rob/break-in.

I may be way off but hope it helps!

Re: Stork for lawn?

I have heard all the reasoning for why you should not get one but maybe I am naive. I am not going to live in fear over something that "could" happen! So I will be getting one when the baby is born

I had one with both and the whole kidnapping thing and robbing thing is ridiculous sorry. I think it is just absurd.

At Winthrop they discouraged it. I didn't do it with DS and won't with DD. I am not so keen on my neighbors that I even want them knowing either.

While they're cute, I won't be getting one. I've heard the same thing about kidnapping & theft, but it's really just not my personal style...that & I also don't want to broadcast it to all of my neighbors. The ones that we talk to will get the scoop right from us.

I personally would not get, no need to advertise to all the nuts in the world that there is a newborn baby in the house

Re: Stork for lawn?

and also for me, aside from the "advertising the new baby" perspective, I just really don't like them

anyone who should know I had a baby will already know

I always liked them but because of things mentioned above I don't plan on getting one. However, I can picture my parents showing up with one Chat Icon Chat Icon

I agree-I think it's absurd to discount cautiousness in this world these days.

I won't be getting one, but it is up to each parent to decide what is right for them.

Re: Stork for lawn?

We'll most likely be getting one. I think they're cute and fun. My siblings have all had them with no problems. We live in a great neighborhood, on a great block with great neighbors waiting for the arrival of our baby. We've already had a few storks on our block with no reported kidnappings or robberies. Yes I'm a cautious person but I don't think a week of a plywood stork is going to draw in the nuts any more than a fire safety child sticker on the window, a tricycle in the driveway or a car seat in your car. To each her own and the choice is yours.

I had one, I thought it was cute!

I have a swingset in the backyard that you can see from the street that also lets people know I have kids.

Didn't want one/didn't get one. I didn't feel the need to advertise it to the entire neighborhood but to each his own.

I agree. A sicko is a sicko. It is not so far-fetched to think a predactor could be on the look out for storks.

Personally, I think they're cute but DH is 100% opposed and I see the rationale - so we won't be getting one. With Ryan DH ran home to finish renovating the kitchen, so getting a stork was the last thing on his mind when Ryan came a bit early.Chat Icon

Re: Stork for lawn?

personally, i never understood the whole "person will come and snatch my baby" thing. i used one for #1 and will definitely use it for #2. we had so many neighbors stop by because they saw the sign--it was so nice!!!

there are so many things people can see to know you have kids--you sit outside with them, have toys all over, leave the stroller outside, put boxes out to the curb when you get a gift, etc. i personally think it's way overthinking things to not have a stork because of strangers.

For me, it's unneccesary advertising. While I don't propose "living in fear" is the way to go, I prefer to err on the side of caution.

Between the economy and the craziness in our world, I look at it as something small I am doing to give me a little more peace of mind.

exactly and I wish people would stop saying how "ridiculous" another person's opinion is, it is really rude Chat Icon

if you want a lawn sign, get one but don't begrudge others who may not be comfortable with it or see the reason for having one

Re: Stork for lawn?

I personally think that the storks are adorable and would love to get one..... BUT I am too creeped out by all of the warnings against them and won't be getting one. I think its a shame that I feel like that, but I just wouldn't be comfortable.

I've never actually heard of the warnings against them, this is interesting (and informative to me)

Just curious :

was there ever a case of someone kidnapping/robbing a house because of a stork ?

I'll still probably get one. But can understand why someone would skip it.

it reminds me of how they say after christmas to destroy all your boxes so noone can drive around and see what tv's, other expensive items you have in your house.

Re: Stork for lawn?

I love them, they're so cute! The thought never crossed my mind about being robbed over it. I got one for my sister as a surprise when my nephew was born and she LOVED it! Plus you get the keepsake part of them too with their name, date, weight etc..etc..
