Suffolk issues alert on whooping cough

The number of pertussis -- or whooping cough -- cases recorded in Suffolk County so far this year has more than tripled compared with last year, leading public health authorities to issue an alert for doctors to be on the lookout for the condition.
"In order to contain the spread of infection, we ask health care providers to consider pertussis as a possible diagnosis when patients present with cold-like symptoms and a dry cough," Suffolk County Health Commissioner Dr. James L. Tomarken said in a statement.
"Early detection and appropriate antibiotic treatment is the key to minimizing symptoms and containing the spread of the infection," Tomarken said.
The county has reported 179 pertussis cases to the New York State Department of Health so far this year, compared with 54 cases in 2010 and 75 cases in 2009. Nationwide, 27,550 cases of pertussis were reported in 2010, up from 16,858 cases in 2009.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Monday linked the higher number of cases to a variety of factors that range from the vaccine's effectiveness to parents shunning vaccinations. Like many vaccines, the pertussis shot, which has different formulations for children and adults, does not provide 100 percent protection and tends to wane in some people within three years.
Some parents have also avoided vaccines altogether, fearing autism and other neurological disorders. The result is a larger vulnerable population.
The last time Suffolk pertussis cases rose past the 100 mark in one year was in 2006.
A similar upsurge has not been recorded to date in Nassau County, health department spokeswoman Mary Ellen Laurain said Monday. The number of Suffolk cases includes a student who attended Chaminade High School in Mineola but who lived in Suffolk.
Whooping cough is a highly contagious bacterial infection that has plagued communities for centuries. The first vaccine was developed in the 1930s.
The condition is typified by a barking cough -- the whoop -- that when untreated can be so violent sufferers are unable to catch a breath. In the days before antibiotic therapy, some children cracked a rib during violent coughing spells that, in many cases, proved fatal.
The pertussis bacterium produces a toxin, doctors say, that accelerates the formation of thick mucus in the lungs that in turn drives the uncontrollable urge to cough. "It's sometimes called the 100-day cough," said Dr. Dennis Russo of Suffolk's department of health.
Dr. Lara Misegades, an epidemiologist at the CDC who specializes in the study of pertussis, said the condition tends to wax and wane in three- to five-year cycles, and that no two states experience upticks at the same time. Russo said it is impossible right now to tell whether Suffolk is in the midst of an episodic cycle.
Last year, a major pertussis epidemic gripped California, affecting 9,000 people.

Re: Suffolk issues alert on whooping cough

I am so on the fence of what to do. Apparently I had an allergic reaction to the vaccine when I was an infant but part of me thinks I should get the.vaccine to protect but wouldn't everyone who comes in contact with her have to be vaccinated? I'm a sahm and I do not bring her to public places such as stores. What would you do?

The reason to vaccinate her is so she can be safe around those who AREN'T vaccinated. Not giving it to her, just increases her chances of getting it. Jmho

Usually early. Like 2 months, and then again at 4 months etc
If you get all their vaccines they should have had it at least 2 times by 11 months.

I think she is referring to herself getting it (and having had a reaction)> Not her child getting it.

Re: Suffolk issues alert on whooping cough

It's really scary & highly contagious.

It was found in our school district last week & my son came home sick last week (cough, fever, etc.). We had him at the ped this am.

While everyone is fine now, I'm really happy I took precautions with a newborn in the family. Now maybe DH won't think I was completely overreacting when I said no one could see the baby until we were sure it's nothing.

A 7 week old baby...wow. Just devastating.Chat Icon

Re: Suffolk issues alert on whooping cough

I think the rec age to give it is 2m. We kept DS away from public places and where very strict about who came within breathing distance of him, till he got the vaccine.

I did not get booster, and neither did my DH, we risked it. IMO I go back and forth on this, not sure if it was smart to risk it.

Its most deadly to infants under 6m.

Your 4 year old is probably already vaccinated - and that vaccine should still be good. Check with your doc just to be sure.

Adults are more susceptible to getting whooping cough and passing it on to children since their vaccines have worn off for a long time now...

Children are actually less of a risk since they (assuming they had the vaccine) are still protected.

At least, that's the way my doc explained it to me.

DH and I got the vaccine and my parents got it, too.

My MIL didn't have to get it since she HAD whooping cough as a child, so she's already immune.

I believe my DD got the vaccine at 2 months and just got the booster at her 4 month appointment.

I got the vaccine in the hospital but DH hasn't gotten it yet.

It s*cks bc you don't want to live in a bubble but don't want to expose them to stuff like this either!

Re: Suffolk issues alert on whooping cough

The recommended schedule is 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 15-18 months and then a booster at age 4-6 before entering school. It is part of the DTaP vaccine. Adults can also get a booster.

Re: Suffolk issues alert on whooping cough

To asnwer your original question, if you are a SAHM and will be in most of the time with your DC...its a toss up. I was in this position when DD was born 3 years ago and I opted to not get it b/c I was afraid of a reaction, and I didnt go anywhere without her pretty much (which was just to the ped or so for the first 2 mths).

They should offer you one after you have the baby and before you leave the hospital.

Re: Suffolk issues alert on whooping cough

I'm confused by this. I'm surprised that there is such an outbreak in schools - this is a vaccine that you need 3 doses of to even enter school Chat Icon So, if all of these are vaccinated children then, how does getting the vaccination solve the problem?

You don't need 3 doses to enter schools. You can opt out of immunizations in NY based on religious & medical reasons.

In fact, I know someone with child who is not immunized & in the elementary school it was found.

Also the vaccinations guard against catching in & also result in a milder case of it.

Effectiveness of the VaccineTop
The DTaP vaccine is 95% effective in preventing all three diseases that it immunizes against—diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis. It is 59-89% effective in preventing pertussis, while the protection rates for diphtheria and tetanus are higher. Pertussis occasionally occurs in children who have received the pertussis immunization, but it is less severe and has fewer complications.Source
