Sunscreen for kids at preschool-- a question
DD’s preschool wants us to send in sunblock for the spring/summer. Normally I use California Baby and it works great on her skin. I have a tube all ready to send in with her, but then I was thinking—are they going to hate me for sendingit in? Anyone who’s used it (or any of the other “natural” sunblocks) can relate when I say it’s super-thick, hard to rub in, etc. I know tons of kids her age (she’s almost 4) use the spray sunscreens (or even traditional ones that are much thinner/easier to rub in than CB), so will they cringe when it comes time to put it on DD?
Is there a "natural" spray sunscreen that any of you use and like? I could send that in and keep the CB for home.

I would definitely send a spray in for daycare...so much easier and they work just as good.

Re: Sunscreen for kids at preschool-- a question
I don't know of a natural spray, but I would send a traditional lotion or spray for those days, because I would worry that they wouldn't do a good job of coverage if it was hard to rub in. I'd rather my DC have SOME sunscreen on, even if it were not my preferred brand.

Why not just put it on her before hand?

She's there for 7 hours a day, it's a full-day program.

This is what I was thinking of doing too.

I guess I'm in the minority. I would send what I want my child to wear and tough noogies on them if it's difficult to rub in! I'd make sure I let them know the proper way to apply, etc.

I agree. I'm sure it's not a big deal for them. Use what you are comfortable with.

Ours won't take a spray-makes the floor slippery.
I would send in your preferred brand. If you find that they are not doing a good enough job with it, may then replace with an easier to use lotion.

I would put it on her in the morning anyway and send in the same stuff for them to reapply later. This way she already has a base.

I'd send in what you want her to use. They probably won't be happy about it.... but it's your choice as to what she wears.
I don't think (I could be wrong) they make a "natural" spray... natural sunscreens are characteristically thick because of what they are made of.

I agree, and IME they aren't really outside long enough to get very much exposure.

Re: Sunscreen for kids at preschool-- a question
I always worry about spray sunscreen because it's so difficult to ensure full coverage with it (I've gotten many a splotchy sunburn myself!). Last summer, I sent in Neutrogena baby sunscreen. My son has our see-though Irish skin, and that was the highest SPF (I think 70) I could find, with as few crazy chemical ingredients, that was also for sensitive skin/babies (free of scents, or any of that other stuff). It was definitely thicker than most sunscreens, daycare staff never seemed to have issue with applying it or anything. You should absolutely send it what you are comfortable being used on them!

That's what I plan on doing. I really prefer Blue lizzard vs. california baby is better when it comes down to spreading it. If I don't find blue lizzard, I will send california baby. I don't want anyone else to use anything else.

Same here. Our preschool actually asks us to put it on them before school and they don't apply it at school.
DS's daycare asked us to send it in, but I am not sure I would trust them to get good enough coverage if it is hard to spread. I have been there a couple of times when they were trying to get 12 kids ready to go outside and I think something hard to spread would not get applied correctly, regardless of what you ask them to do.

Re: Sunscreen for kids at preschool-- a question
I'd send what you prefer DC to use -- it's not your concern whether they complain about it or not.
When my DCs were in daycare, we were asked to apply sunscreen before we dropped them off and the teachers would re-apply after lunch/nap. There were times when I showed up during that time and I saw them applying the products to the LOs and it was a HUGE production, but they made it work!
I don't like the spray ones for my DCs because you can't really tell where it gets applied, plus I feel there is way too much alcohol in the product and it's unnecessarily drying out their skin.
