Now Adelphi is trying to bribe students with gift cards and raffle tickets. Utterly ridiculous.
I dont get the uproar about offering an incentive. They do it for blood donations so why is this a big deal because some people don’t want to get it at all and don’t believe in it??!! I don’t hear uproars when the Red Cross does it so why now. Who really cares??!!!
I’m on the fence of getting it and o can tell you offering something free to me won’t change my mind but hey if I do decide to get it and they want to give me Something great!
What is the Red Cross offering as they come to my job and we don’t get anything?
If this vaccine is so great they wouldn’t have to bribe people to get it.
I would never take a $25 gift card to take an emergency, not FDA approved vaccine. It is not worth it to not know if I will get something later on associated to the vaccine.
I got Jets pre-season tickets years ago for donating blood. DH's job in the past offered free meal coupons from the cafeteria for donating blood as well. It is no big deal to offer incentives to encourage more people to do a good thing such as give blood or get vaccinated.
The vaccine will be be FDA approved shortly, that was just a matter of time and literally won't change anything about the vaccine's efficacy or safety. Will it somehow be more appealing to you if an FDA approval is now slapped on it?
No probably not as I would like to see the long term effects it might have. Who knows what could happen in a year or 2 when people are already having odd things happen to them (see menstrual thread). Giving blood is a totally different animal. No one is forcing you non stop to do it and you won’t have to worry about getting sick or having other issues after.
Nobody is "forcing" you to get a vaccine either. Unless you're kidnapped, held down and injected I am not sure why you're so worried. You have a choice in the matter, you made YOUR choice so move on. Who cares what everyone else is doing and why. If someone is swayed to get vaccinated because of a free beer, so be it.
So you don’t think more places will require to be vaccinated? You are living in a fantasy world then as it is definitely heading in that direction. “Show your papers” is getting to be very popular to do many things. At least in NY, this is probably not going to end and people will be forced to get the vaccine.
You will always have a choice but every choice you make in life has a consequence to it. Don't get vaccinated but then accept the fact that maybe in the short term you won't have entry to certain venues or places. You can't have things both ways. The more people who are vaccinated, the safer the world around becomes. That's simple medical fact.
I personally don't have any issue with the vaccine, I'd rather take my chances with that than the complete unknown of how your own immune system and body will react to COVID. Been there, done that and have ZERO desire to ever go through the stress of COVID again without any protection.
The reality is, COVID vaccines will just be a part of life now just like flu vaccines, polio vaccines, measles vaccines, and on and on. In another year or two, nobody will bat an eye about it.
I agree eventually it won’t be a big deal and like many others I probably won’t choose to get it like I don’t choose to get a flu shot.
It should be a choice like the flu shot and others vaccines are not required to do many things in life. This one should not be either.
It is a choice.
As for schools, mandating vaccines for students is nothing new. I had to provide my immunization record back in the day when I was in school as well. Realize, this is also the colleges covering their own a$$. They don't want to deal with a COVID outbreak on their campus especially if anyone ends up dying from it. They are trying to protect the student population as well as their own best interests.
I don’t agree with schools as it should be a choice. The country is at 58% vaccinated so when they get to their 70% which they finally have said the number, they need to loosen up the rules and back off bribing people.
But then who knows who will keep up with the shots as now it is all fun and exciting and new and the thing to do.
The vaccine isn't a fad, getting your COVID vaccine will become another medical necessity that needs to be addressed every year just like getting your flu shot, mammo, pap smear, hearing test, eye test, cancer screening and all of the other things we do to protect ourselves from illness.
I don't care if they forever "bribe" people to get their vaccine every year if it means keeping us ALL protected and healthy. The hope is that with enough people vaccinated instead of COVID being a public health threat it'll fast become this nothing thing that you might get but is no worse than a cold or flu.
Bribe away America, bribe away until we get as close as possible to the whole country being vaccinated.
Then all vaccines should be bribes, no? Why just this one?
You realize people are being encouraged simply because it's a new vaccine and people are hesitant, right? Nobody thinks twice about getting their polio, flu, measles etc vaccines because they have been around forever and nobody gives them a passing thought. The COVID vaccine will eventually be that way too over time.
Unfortunately, we're also contending with a large population of people who never took COVID seriously to begin with thanks to the abysmal leadership we had. Things could've been different but here we are, still trying to convince people that COVID is a global health threat and that the vaccine is essential to moving past this nightmare.
Exactly, because they have been around forever. We all know any long term effects of these vaccines. Even Gardisil is too new for some people. No one should be forced and bribed into something that is too new to know if it will effect them later on. I truly hope this works and people don’t suffer in years to come, I honestly do as I know many who have gotten it. It is not a threat enough for many people to have to be forced down their throat every 2 seconds when you watch tv or read a paper or go online though. Let people make their own decisions in life.
I'm gonna be honest... I can't tell you the last time I had a vaccine. Well wait- I can- this winter when I got hurt and had to get a tetanus booster- because before that it was probably 30 years since my last one. But if it had not been for that laceration I wouldn't have had that shot either. I never got a flu shot once in my life. My last measles shot was probably at what- 18 months old? What vaccines are people getting yearly? Other than flu I mean.... I know people get that but I chose not to.
In terms of the people who never took Covid seriously to begin with due to our leadership or whatever caused them to feel that way- they won't be bribed with $25 to get this vaccine.
I have to get a titers test each year to make sure I still have immunity to certain illnesses (I am a teacher). I have gotten both the MMR booster and the Tdap booster in the last two years. But I would imagine if you aren't a teacher, you are not getting any vaccines whatsoever as an adult. I am a Catholic school teacher- the diocese is strict with teacher vaccines, not sure if the DOE is the same way.
I was a teacher too but with public schools and titers or boosters were never requested from me. I stopped being a teacher in 2012 so I’m not sure if things have changed since then. I gotta say, it amazes me the irony and hypocrisy of how particularly strict catholic schools are with teacher vaccines considering some vaccines have used human cell lines from aborted babies.

SUNY/CUNY and vaccines
I’ve had titers drawn for every job I’ve had (all non-patient facing jobs within large healthcare systems). If my titers were negative I would need to have a booster as a condition of my employment. Flu shots were never mandatory but you were required to show proof of having had the vaccine (almost everyone just gets it at work) and if you didn’t you had to wear a mask.....which, at the time was crazy

This vax anti-vax back and forth is very much a first world problem. There is a clear disparity between the availability of the vaccine in "rich" countries (such as the US) and poorer ones (like India, African contries, etc). I'd bet there are many people living there who'd be rolling their eyes at this.

They are perfect candidates for the vaccine too. Their hospitals are not equipped to treat Covid patients. They have a higher chance of dying from Covid. I don’t understand why we’re not shipping vaccines there.
We are so focused on getting every single person vaccinated in the US and it just makes no sense.
Did anyone see the Yankees coach who tested positive despite getting the vaccine? And now they have to work on finding out all his close contacts? You can still get Covid with the vaccine you just won’t be hospitalized. The poorer countries who don’t have the medical facilities like us NEED the vaccine.
ETA, these ridiculous rules for vaccinated vs not vaccinated need to stop. Either go back to negative tests to enter places or just open up normally. The vaccinated have such a false sense of security. I wonder if the Yankees coach was vaccinated a while ago and it’s just not effective anymore and he was probably maskless around all his vaccinated friends. Notice how all these places requiring fully vaccinated do not care WHEN you were vaccinated.

95% efficacy in preventing severe COVID symptoms, hospitalization and death is NOT a false sense of security.
Getting as many people vaccinated in this country makes ALL the sense in the world. It's absolutely mind boggling that you cannot see the value in a vaccinated population. I for one enjoy not having to worry about measles, small pox, polio and more. I also look forward to not having to worry about having a severe case of COVID that can potentially kill me or leave me with long term health issues. I have friends who have had COVID, recovered and now continue to suffer with breathing issues, hearing loss, debilitating fatigue, loss of taste and smell, severe headaches and more. Stop underestimating just how problematic COVID can be even if you don't land in the hospital. The more severe symptoms of COVID and the subsequent long term health effects can be avoided by being vaccinated.
Vaccines are 100% the answer to this public health crisis both here and abroad. If you don't want to be vaccinated, that's fine, but it's ridiculous to constantly minimize the importance and effectivness of the COVID vaccine. And yes, every country should have access to the vaccine. The more people globally that are vaccinated, the better off we'll all be as a society.

Serious question, if you can still get Covid even after vaccinated, how do we really know if a person won’t suffer any long term side effects being that the virus was in their system? Are we just assuming there won’t be any because the symptoms are less severe?

If the vaccine is 95% effective at minimizing the effects of COVID and preventing severe reactions and hospitalizations it would be safe to assume that very minor symptoms wouldn't cause long term issues. If most every COVID case is reduced to a very mild case with little to no symptoms than the impact of the virus on your health will most certainly be less. The more severe case of COVID, the more taxing on your immune system and body.
It's a personal choice and to each his own on whether or not they choose to get vaccinated but after having had a moderate case of COVID myself and seeing how that impacted me, I will take the 95% protection over zero.

I also had Covid and so far the vaccine symptoms and side effects sound 1000x worse than what I experienced. I probably won’t get it this year and just stick with my antibodies for now.

That’s the thing though, a lot of it is assumptions, or suggestions, no concrete data regarding getting the virus after being vaccinated and transmission even with what Pfizer and Moderna have provided. And from the perspective of having less chances for long term effects due to lessening symptoms because of the vaccine, wouldn’t the natural infection cases who the majority are actually asymptomatic or very mild symptoms also be less susceptible to any long term effects? I’d love for them to answer this question along with many others that have yet to be answered.

You are assuming all of this and there is no long term research to back up what you are stating.
Everyone says it is a personal choice and if it is, then we shouldn’t have to keep bribing people to get it. Again today I heard about getting free this or that. They know many people live life in the moment and don’t think of the future so they are offering in the moment things.
Seems even vaccinated people can and will get sick so the shunning of people who are not vaccinated is ridiculous as a vaccinate person can get another vaccinated person sick. It maybe not as bad but we haven’t gotten to that point yet with the amount of people totally vaccinated to confirm that.

Re your last paragraph: Everyone keeps saying its everyones personal choice while at the same time belittling, criticizing and judging people for not rushing to get it and shoving it down everyone’s throat.
I truly don’t care what people decide and actually do support anyone who decides to get it the same way I support people who choose not too at this time.
I also had Covid and so far the vaccine symptoms and side effects sound 1000x worse than what I experienced. I probably won’t get it this year and just stick with my antibodies for now.
If being vaccinated means the symptoms of COVID are minimized then your body doesn't need to mount such an intense immune response to the virus in order for you to heal. Right now COVID symptoms run the gammit from mild to severe to death. If the vaccine can reduce COVID down to it being no worse then a common cold or virus then the threat of COVID goes away. How many people do you know that suffer long term from a cold, virus or even the flu? Most of us recover from those illnesses with no problem. If we can get to that point with COVID through the use of vaccines then the less we need to worry about long term health issues from having had it.
I'm sorry you had a terrible response to the vaccine, that sucks, but the good news for others is that intense reaction isn't common. So far the data shows most people have a mild, fleeting response in particular to the second shot. Unfortunately, there will always be some that respond worse to any given medication or vaccine, that's par for the course.
Lastly, I don't think most people are belittling or criticizing anyone and to be perfectly honest, those that don't want to be vaccinated are ramming their POV's down everyone's throat on these threads just as much, if not more, as those who believe in the vaccine. It goes both ways. I too don't particularly care what anyone else chooses to do, I'll make the decision that's best for me. I do of course think that we ALL benefit from a vaccinated population but I certainly am not going to spend my time stressing over what each individual decides to do with regards to this vaccine or any other for that matter.

Go online and tell people you don’t want to be vaccinated and see how they treat you. You are belittled, criticized, told you are selfish. Just because you haven’t encountered it, doesn’t mean it is not happening.

I haven’t had the vaccine, but it’s been wiping out everyone around me for a few days. My sister actually regrets getting her first dose but will continue on to get fully vaccinated even though she is extremely worried.
I feel like it’s the reverse of what you are saying. Before everyone seem to have mild symptoms, now every other day someone on my team is out with extreme symptoms, days in bed from the vaccine. The stories I am hearing lately have been horrible with side effects. In the grand scheme, I agree it’s better than the potential of dying from the virus. But the extreme side effects have been very common lately.
I am not going to go back and forth but people are getting criticized for not rushing out to get the vaccine or not trusting it. It’s 100% the truth and not just on here. They are actually doing it at my job. It’s pretty gross that people can’t truly respect others people decisions. It’s like Covid wiped out everyone’s empathy and understanding. No one can see the other side of things anymore.

I think COVID has most everyone running scared and after a year of life being upended and living with the fear of being so ill from a virus that you can die, people are on edge. Most see the vaccine as the answer to what ails us despite the uncertainty of it. I think it's less about people not being understanding and empathetic and more about people being COVID fatigued and missing normalcy. It is a sucky situation, we're all emotionally spent.
Just my take on it.

Safe to assume, It’s an assumption, that’s all I needed to know. We are assuming.

Go online and tell people you don’t want to be vaccinated and see how they treat you. You are belittled, criticized, told you are selfish. Just because you haven’t encountered it, doesn’t mean it is not happening.
If that is happening to you and it is bothersome then maybe you should keep your choice and opinions on vaccination to yourself. Easy solution to the problem. If you keep putting those things out there and you keep getting a negative reaction from others than that is on you, not them at that point.
Or maybe the people who are doing that are the problem and @ssholes. This response is exactly what I am referring too. You basically just backed up my point.

Yup and it is turning into politics with the right and left coming at each other. It is sad. It should be a choice just like most things in life. This virus has a survival rate between 98 and 99 percent and no one knows what long term effects you will have from any illness. Life has to go on and let people decide what is best for them. I am so sick of hearing you will kill grandma. Then grandma needs to take precautions, not everyone else.

Safe to assume, It’s an assumption, that’s all I needed to know. We are assuming.
Actually, no I didn't.
Many people are a$$holes but if you keep putting yourself into conversations or situations that aggravate you, that's on you. Walk away. I've walked away from many conversations, forums, people, situations, etc. in my life because it wasn't serving me in any positive way. This is the same thing. If you want to keep going at it with "a$$holes" online who frustrate and upset you than that's on you. They aren't going anywhere and certainly don't care about how you feel but you have the ability to remove yourself from the nonsense. Give yourself peace of mind, don't expect others to do that for you.

No, not most everyone. People who are easily influenced, yes. Many have been out and about for over a year already, working and traveling and socializing. They are careful, but not running scared and living in fear.

This is becoming just like a left and right issue and I don’t think it will stop just online behind a computer screen.

I am out ALL the time. I've yet to be asked my vaccination status or be told I need to sit in a designated area. As usual, you like to create these falsehoods to support whatever point you're trying to make in the moment.
Secondly, I walk away all the time IF I feel like it. Some days I do, some days on LIF I really enjoy going back at you.
That aside, I stand by what I said. If you're tired of people not agreeing with you and giving you $hit over your vaccination status then walk away from those people.

1. That is hilarious what you just said that YOU walk away. But I will move on.... 2. It’s not just walking away as many places now you have to go sit elsewhere because you are not vaccinated. If you don’t think people will say things out and about then I have a bridge to sell you.
You haven’t been to places obviously that are separating the vaccinated with the unvaccinated. Which you will be in the un so you will know then I guess :)
