Supermarket Issue - Would this gross you out?

Had a bag of those pre-cut, pre-washed carrots, and my toddler wanted to have one to snack on. So I opened the bag with that little fresh seal thingy and closed it up.

At checkout line, the 70% of the carrots fell onto the conveyor belt, and mostly on that little square with the scan thing (the thing that reads the UPS code)

Before I knew what to say, the young girl said, "It's fine, don't worry about it" and proceeded to put the carrots back into the bag.

...obviously her hands are dirty because of handling money, but also the issue of the conveyor belt/scan thingy...I was creeped out.

I didn't say anything, paid for them, and left.

So now I have these carrots.
And I'm creeped out.
I'd assume washing them and boiling them in hot water would solve the issue...right?

I think that will definitely do the trick. Even if I buy produce that is already "pre washed", I always give it a few good, thorough rinses.

Honestly, *I* would chuck 'em. I remember all the gross things that would leak onto the belt when I was a cashier. Boiling them probably would kill anything though.

Re: Supermarket Issue - Would this gross you out?

I would dump them...raw meats, especially chicken touch the belt at the supermarket, and why should you risk getting salmonella poisoning?

Boiling will definitely help -- but that's it.

Re: Supermarket Issue - Would this gross you out?

I would not have bought them and gotten a new bag (or asked for a new bag to be brought up to me). I am definitely not a germiphobe by any means and that would gross me out! (sorry Chat Icon )

Re: Supermarket Issue - Would this gross you out?

They're fine. When I buy fruit and vegetables and don't NEED a plastic bag, I put them on the conveyor belt bare. Just wash them.

I think it would be ok once they are washed & cooked. I always wash fresh foods before I use them. Who really knows how produce is handled behind the scenes? Next time, I would wouldnt open the bag in the store or be sure to close it tightly.

Re: Supermarket Issue - Would this gross you out?

yeah it definately was my fault in the sense that the bag wasn't properly closed ( i was rushing, kid wanted a carrot, etc lol)

but i figured zucchinis past the conveyor belt and those are cooked and eaten with the skin..

...lessons learned. lol

Wash it, but most of the time, you'd probably be able to ask for a new bag without much trouble.

Re: Supermarket Issue - Would this gross you out?

Ewww. I would have grabbed a new bag. I don't care that I opened them already, she shouldn't have thrown them back in the bag, with her DIRTY hands off of the NASTY belt.

Sorry but this made me Chat Icon

I think you're right though - all of the other unbagged produce we buy is touched by god knows how many people every day! I think washing and boiling the carrots makes them perfectly safe to eat.

Re: Supermarket Issue - Would this gross you out?

My theory is always been- when in doubt, throw it out. That conveyor belt always skeeves me out, plus with her hands touching them...eew. If it were me, I dont think I'd be able to eat them, even if they were boiled.

Re: Supermarket Issue - Would this gross you out?

WHAT? she should of just asked you if you wanted to get another bag and put it aside. I worked in a supermarket for years and never did I see someone allow a damaged package good to go out the door.

Re: Supermarket Issue - Would this gross you out?

I'm surprised at how many people say that the store should have given you a different bag after knowing you opened it.

I think you did the right thing. How many people touch their nasty shopping cart and then unload their vegetables at home without washing up first?

Re: Supermarket Issue - Would this gross you out?

throw them away. Nothing more gross that than conveyor belt and scanner.

The scanner only gets windex not anything more and that kills nothing.

Boiling the carrots will cook them and they won't be the crunchy treats you wanted.
