We never ask people to take there shoes off although we would prefer that we do...only if they offer to.

I see nothing wrong with it at all! And we are not neat freaks by any stretch of the imagination!

Re: Take your shoes off before you come in my house

I don't ask people to take shoes off in my house and I don't like it when people ask me to take my shoes off in their house. I will generally do it, but I do see the big deal about taking my shoes off in some houses which are DIRTY.

I have been to a few houses where the homeowners ask me to remove my shoes and then my socks are dirty....or maybe I'm not wearing socks and don't want to walk in my bare feet on the floor.

Sorry, but I think it's kind of gross to have people walking around with no shoes....that's why we have vacuums and cleaning stuff.

No - I wouldn't want to take my shoes off at someone's house so I don't ask them to do it at mine.

to me personally, I think it makes your guests feel uncomfortable. If they want to take them off that is one thing, but to put them on the spot by telling them to is rude IMHO. If your friends are okay with it and it works for you, that is great

Unless of course your feet stink from here to high heaven.

No, I don't ask unless there is a ridiculous amount of grime on someone's shoes.

My friend is a roofer and sometimes has tar on his shoes. I tell him to leave his work at workChat Icon

Re: Take your shoes off before you come in my house

Once again, as per my response to the other times this question is posed:

My shoes are part of my outfit. If you can't stand people wearing shoes in your house for a night- then please don't entertain.

no, I've had friends want to take their shoes off & thats ok with me too. I would never ask or expect someone to.
I have great door mats & i hope people will wipe their feet but thats about it.

I rarely wear shoes in my own house though.

We only ask our close friends if it is raining or snowing. We have wood in the living room.

Ditto - I think it's rude.

I don't think it's rude. In many cultures it is custom to remove your shoes before entering the house. I think it would be rude to ignore your host's request.

When friends stop by do you prefer they take their shoes off before coming in your house.

Prefer? Yes.
Ask them to? Never.

ITA. A lot of my friends and family see me kick off my shoes as soon as I get in the door and they follow my lead.
I do prefer it because of DS being all over the floor, but, I don't ask them to.

Heh.

I prefer that they leave their shoes on. I don't want to be embarrassed by their black socks when they leave.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I was thinking the same thing! I always feel that no matter how much I wash the floors, my socks still look dirty! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I would never ask someone to take off their shoes!! It is NOT customary in this country. I would not be offended if someone wants me to but I would definitly not like to go over to their house knowing I would always have to take off my shoes...PS I have stinky feet so that is where my problem lies Chat Icon Chat Icon

And in other cultures women are to be submissive, and children are used for manual labor~ that doesn't make it the norm in this country.Chat Icon

I AM going to rephrase my answer though:

If it is a casual visit to my SIL or friend's house, where I am close with the host and any other people there- then I will gladly remove shoes.

If it is for a party where there will be people I am not familiar with, then I feel VERY uncomfortable taking off my shoes.

My friend's mom insists upon this. The first time I was over there I was a little put off but she has WHITE carpets in the entrance way and it a "rule" She keeps a basket of slippers by the door for anyone who wants to use them. Now, its just habit. Shoes off, slippers on!

I don't have a no shoes rule, but I don't get all heated when people ask me to remove my shoes.
Except for presently, since it's such a chore to get them off and on.

Well yeah I can totally see if a house is dirty then I wouldn't want my socks to be dirty either. I guess it's part of how you grew up as well...my mom had the no shoe rule as well.

I went to an open house today and the realtor asked that we take our shoes off...um what the hell? I don't think so....think these people will have a real problem selling their house

Us, too! DH refused and we never saw the house (it was in Albertson).

This was in Williston Park...what is it with that areaChat Icon

OMG! White carpets by the door??!!? Forget about shoes- I would be paranoid about even opening the doors! Rain, snow or leaves could blow right in in the right weather. Chat Icon

Re: Take your shoes off before you come in my house

i prefer that people do, but i never ask them to.... we have a bench by our front door and keep our shoes under it, so most of our friends don't even ask- they take their shoes off automatically and leave them right by the front door.
i've never said anything to any of them- i guess they all grew up taking their shoes off at their houses or something... and its not like we banish the ones who DON'T take their shoes off Chat Icon
i also take my shoes off when i go to other people's houses most of the time- i hate wearing shoes so its just habit to take them off as soon as i can Chat Icon

Re: Take your shoes off before you come in my house

I don't ever ask people to take off their shoes when they come to my house. We do have a shoe rack beside the front door. Most people take their shoes off when they come in to the house. Our house is an Asian home and most people assume that we prefer it.
