When I 1st moved in, and had brand new beige carpets, people just knew to take off their shoes. As time went on, and some would slowly stop taking their shoes off. To make a long story short, now our carpets are FILTHY. I think it's difficult to have to come across getting people to take off their shoes, or hope that they want to, so after I get them steamcleaned, we're getting a huge supply of these to get the best of both worlds. Its just ironic. We are a culture that encourages hand washing, daily showerng and other measures for cleaning and stopping the spreading of germs, but we wear the shoes that we just walked on the street into our homes without thinking about it.

Great point and a very interesting way of looking at it. Chat Icon

yes I do. Especially if I have just cleaned my floors. If that makes me rude, I guess I am rude. I think it is rude to enter somebody's home and leave your shoes on.

I think the difference is, you usually are friends with, and invite to your home, people with like minds.

I don't understand why she shouldn't entertain b/c you two don't share like minds on this subject.

isn't that just as rude?

Once again, as per my response to the other times this question is posed:

My shoes are part of my outfit. If you can't stand people wearing shoes in your house for a night- then please don't entertain.

so, if you came over to my house, could I ask you to remove your whole outfit? That way you are still matching! Chat Icon

Ugh- that would mean I'd have to make sure the carpets match the drapes as well as do "the super shave"..... do you prefer a triangle or landing strip? Chat Icon

I think here in the States its a different culture when it comes to taking off your shoes. Its acceptable not to. In a lot of European countries it is a sign of respect and a norm to take your shoes of when you come into somebody's house.

With that said, I would NEVER ask my guests to take their shoes off.

ok. but still...you are saying she shouldn't entertain...why? she's come up with a viable solution. you don't like it. so you tell her to not have people in her home???

If they are exceptionally muddy or covered in snow I would ask them too. Otherwise no, I wouldn't ask and I wouldn't care if someone asked me.

It's a regional thing. I grew up in MI and everyone removes there shoes at the door there. No one ever asks and it's just what they do. I don't wear shoes in my house or other people's. I have a crawler so I prefer people to remove their shoes since I don't really like street germs ending up in her mouth Chat Icon
