Re: Take your shoes off before you come in my house
Posted by Porrruss
Once again, as per my response to the other times this question is posed:
My shoes are part of my outfit. If you can't stand people wearing shoes in your house for a night- then please don't entertain.
so, if you came over to my house, could I ask you to remove your whole outfit? That way you are still matching!

Re: Take your shoes off before you come in my house
People are welcome to take their shoes off when they come over but I wound NEVER ask them to remove their shoes. I can't recall anyone walking around the house with wet shoes.
If I am asked to remove my shoes I will but I prefer to keep my shoes on. If I am wearing socks I don't mind as much but I HATE the feeling of carpet on my bare feet. I think it's rude to make your guests feel uncomfortable.

no, I would never ask anyone to take their shoes off
Ditto - I think it's rude.
i agree.
UNLESS there was a snowstorm and mounds of dirty slush were everywhere - then i'd politely ask if they'd mind taking off their shoes...
then again, i probably wouldn't have visitors after a snowstorm

I've got two mats in the foyer. You can leave them on or take them off..doesn't matter to me.
heck, whatever makes you comfy.

Re: Take your shoes off before you come in my house
I don't ask anyone to.
That said, I would not find it rude if someone asked me. I always had to take off my shoes when I walked into my house, and the houses of many of my friends, growing up. I sometimes feel weird if I don't take off my shoes upon entering a house. Especially if they have nice, clean carpets of floors.

Re: Take your shoes off before you come in my house
I wouldn't ask people to take their shoes off unless there was a real reason - like I know for a fact they just trudged through the mud, or we'd gotten some floor treatment that required no shoes. But I don't think it's rude to ask. Your house, your rules. If we go to someone's house and they are shoe-taker-offers, then we are too while we're there. It may be inconvenient, but there are more important things in life to get offended over.

i would never ask people to take their shoes off. we once went to a housewarming where they had white carpets. we had to take the shoes off. dh stayed in the area of the house where there was no carpeting so he wouldn't have to take his shoes off
if there was white carpeting, i would take my shoes off, no questions asked-why didnt he take his shoes off?
i dont thin its rude to ask, and i wouldnt get mad/offended at ALL if ppl asked me to...

Re: Take your shoes off before you come in my house
The only people I make sure take shoes off in my house are my stepkids. They don't look where they walk and walk in mud and everything else. As far as adults, they're usually pretty careful about where they walk and more than likely I'm not having dog sh!t dragged through my living room.
To answer the question, you can wear shoes in my house...no problem.

I don't ask people, but if the situation called for it, I would.
I also don't mind if someone asks me.

this is not one of them

Silly question. After this thread goes away, will it be resurrected in another three months? Will the answers change? Will everyone get hardwood floors and let this lie? Will J-Lo have had her babies? Will they have found Hoffa's body? Sorry. I just reached my limit and lost it.

I am apparently rude. I almost always ask but most people already know.
Ditto.
It's a cultural thing - I am West Indian and it is customary to remove your shoes before entering someone's home.
If someone is visiting my home, I would expect them to respect my wishes.

Re: Take your shoes off before you come in my house
We normally take our shoes off when it is just us, but even in my own home if I am entertaining I actually prefer having my shoes on.
We had firedog come in and install our flat screen when we moved in and apparently their policy is to lay a blanket down and wear plastic baggie things on their shoes if there is carpeting. I thought that was so nice!

Re: Take your shoes off before you come in my house
We don't ask anyone to take off their shoes. Honestly never really thought about it!
We have friends that have a brand new home with hardwood floors everywhere. They have a no shoe rule and I never really thought it was rude - their house, their rules. I do remember thinking the first time I went - jeez I hope my feet aren't stinky for some reason! LOL! One time I forgot to take my shoes off and realized later on and apologized, went to take them off, but our friends were cool with it.

Re: Take your shoes off before you come in my house
I don't ask anyone but family, but honestly, I would prefer it if people did. My DD (and I) are always sitting and playing on the floor.
Its funny when you think how it is not an American custom to take your shoes off in your home. But its so common in so many other cultures. I was just reading a book about India and they talk about how they always have flip flops in different sizes so that when a guest enters the home, they can wear "indoor" slippers. DD"s babysitter who is from Jamaica also keeps flip flops in our home.
Its just ironic. We are a culture that encourages hand washing, daily showerng and other measures for cleaning and stopping the spreading of germs, but we wear the shoes that we just walked on the street into our homes without thinking about it.

Re: Take your shoes off before you come in my house
Absolutely. The only time we don't is when we are having a larger sized party.
We don't walk around our house with our shoes on so we appreciate guests to do the same.
And I would never be insulted if someone requested me to take off my shoes when entering their house.

Re: Take your shoes off before you come in my house
we do not wear our shoes in the house, it's so gross and dirty. there are germs and god knows what all over the streets, things I certainly don't want in my home.
But, I never ask people to take their shoes off. Most of our visitors do take them off , since we have a shoe rack. But my parents and a couple others do not. I feel funny asking anyone to do so. I cringe when they walk in the house w/ shoes. After they leave I vacuum and wash the floor. right now we have hard wood, but will get carpeting in a few months. at that point I will have to ask them to take shoes off. I really hate to do that though.

Re: Take your shoes off before you come in my house
When I 1st moved in, and had brand new beige carpets, people just knew to take off their shoes. As time went on, and some would slowly stop taking their shoes off. To make a long story short, now our carpets are FILTHY. I think it's difficult to have to come across getting people to take off their shoes, or hope that they want to, so after I get them steamcleaned, we're getting a huge supply of these to get the best of both worlds.
