Tdap
My OB is strongly suggesting I get the Tdap before giving birth, so the antibodies are transferred to baby. Does this mean that she won't have to get the Tdap as part of the vaccination schedule (which I plan on delaying a bit, no drama please!). Have there been studies done on Moms getting it during pregnancy? How do you all feel about it? (If I didn't get it while pregnant, I'd get it immediately after giving birth)

I didn't get it while I was pregnant b/c I had gotten it about a month before I got pregnant. It is extremely common to get it during pregnancy but the baby still needs to get it after she's born as part of her regular vaccines. My whole family also got the Tdap vaccine before DD was born.

They suggest that all pregnant women get it, as well as anyone who will be in close contact with baby. Baby still needs the vaccine. That being said, when I told the doctor I had a poor reaction to it as a child, they decided not to give it to me at all.

You should consider getting it. The antibodies are believed to protect the baby until she is vaccinated. She will still require the vaccine.

Re: Tdap
I am pretty sure the tdap is given a few times over your LOs first year of life anyway. Our LOs are too little to handle it all in one shot. So, if you get it, your LO will still need it. Not sure if they will need one less dose though.

Thanks for the responses! I don't know what to do. My Dr is pushing it but I'm not 100% comfortable with it.

I got it in the hospital after ds was born.
I was just at ds well visit the other day and his ped said I should get it again after these babies are born also. He said as long as my DH had it when ds was born (2011) that he didn't have to get it again, not sure why.

I'm sort of uncomfortable with vaccines as well, however, as someone who had pertussis more than once as an adult, I was adamant about getting, making our families get it, and giving it to DD. It was absolutely horrible to deal with as an adult and can be so much worse for a baby. Ultimately the decision is yours and you have to do with what you are comfortable with. I just wanted to throw this out there!

I received it at 36 weeks pregnant this time. My first DS I never received it and nobody even mentioned it. This time, I decided to get it to give him all the protection he could get. It was rampant in Suffolk last year so I figured let him get what he could get from me for at least the first 6 weeks. I didn't have any reaction and DS is totally fine :)

I got it while pregnant this time. I wanted to do everything I could to protect my little guy as best I could. My immediate family also got the shot. Its a good one to have.

I am also delaying vaccines, and refused the pertussis vaccine while pregnant, but got it in the hospital bc when you nurse your immunities are transferred to your baby. I had whooping cough as an adult and can't imagine my newborn having that. I felt like I was going to die. In addition to DH I also had all grandparents and aunts/uncles get the vaccine

I asked my OB about this yesterday. She said her patients get the shot at 28 weeks. I didn't ask about DH.

FWIW, I had a bad reaction to it as an infant too and did not get the pertussis portion of the vaccine after that. I ended up getting the Tdap after DS2 was born and had no reaction. I didn't feel comfortable getting while pregnant even though the vaccine is different than when we were children.
