I did not circumcise my DS. We are still thinking about it but I have to say if you are on the fence decide before you leave the hospital.
Since we did not do it in the hospital we have to have it done by a Ped Urologist and DS has to be put under.
We have put it off until he is 10 mons because I do not really want to put him under.
how come he has to be put under? Is your dc older? I told my ped urologist that I wanted him to do DS#2's circ when we come home from the hospital & he is going to be using a numbing cream. When DS#1 had his re-circ, he was 22 months old & had to be put under because he was older.

DH and I are Jewish so we will be circumcising LO
same for us, but we'd probably also do it even if we weren't Jewish.

We don't know what we are having but if it is a boy we will have him circumcised, but have been curious about our options to have it done by a pediatric urologist but had these same concerns about the baby being put under.
Can you tell me who your doctor is that will perform it when you get out of the hospital without anesthesia?

Dr Reda from ped urolog assoc did DS#1's re-circ at 22 months using anesthesia. I asked him to do DS#2's circ after he's born in June so that I could avoid having it done twice again. He told me that newborns receive a numbing cream during the circ. The new baby will first go in for a consult a few days after we bring him home & then we'll decide when to do it. Of course, I want to get it done & over with asap.
Dr Reda did a great job with DS#1 but I know a lot of other moms on here used Dr Palmer & Dr Gitlin from the same office & loved them too.

Re: The dreaded question - circumcision.
I don't want to and not planning on it. DH says absolutely yes , so we'll see. I'm Orthodox Christian, so is my DD and so will be this baby - DH is Catholic - and we don't do it. Not that I'm very religious , but it's just not something that's done where I come from ( former soviet republic) unless u r jewish .
Oh if we have a boy that is

Re: The dreaded question - circumcision.
could be wrong, but I thought if you don't do it its not so clean for them - they have to make sure to thoroghly pull the skin back to clean it..... and I just start imagining alot of lazy people not doing that and something bad starting.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO You NEVER retract an intact child!!!!!!!!!! My son is not circumcised and it's fine. No rashes, no health issues, no stink, no nothing. You just wipe it off with a wipe and you're done.
OP- I suggest doing research. I wrote out a list of pros and cons and that is how we decided. I also talked with our pastor about the religious part of it and in talking to him we also decided we did not need to. We are not Jewish however, so that may make a difference. It's a deeply personal decision to make but I would encourage you to make the decison based on facts and not based on common misconceptions, and rude uneducated belief's that are based on years and years of hear say. Having said that, I am a big supporter of an educated decison. I would mor ethem willingly talk to you via fm if you would like to chat. Good luck and Congrats

Re: The dreaded question - circumcision.
We had DS circumcised and I would do it again. DH isn't, and he chose to have his son circumcised. I don't judge anyone who chooses not to have thier DSs circumcised, but I think the fact that some people call it cruel and mutilation is crazy! But to each their own..

Re: The dreaded question - circumcision.
Our son is circumcized. It wasn't done well by the OB in the hospital and he needed to have it redone by a pediatric urologist and put under.
If this baby is a boy, we have decided to go with a Mohel to do it. And we are Catholic.

If this is a boy, we are having him circumsiced. Due to my upbringing, the debate is who is going to do it- hospital or bris. His son is, as is he, no questions.

Re: The dreaded question - circumcision.
We had both boys circumcised...it was quick, they healed super fast, and i think both of them cried more when they had their first vaccinations!!
It's a personal family decision. We always knew we'd circumcise, there wasn't any hesitation and we don't regret it at all!

DH and I are Catholic and we are deciding to circumcise DS. Hes still in the NICU and they wont do it until he's about to be discharged. I knew if I had a boy I would circumcise for health reasons

Thank you!
no prob, but I also wanted to let you know that on top of needing a re-circ due to the skin reattaching, DS#1 had a small urethra opening that would have given DS problems when he was older with tearing due to the increased pressure/flow of urination & that would also cause infection. I just feel like how would an obgyn possibly know what a small urethra looks like, you know? They just cut the skin. So next time around, I wanted to use a specialist that could better foresee any issue. Dr Reda told me that had he done DS circ at birth, he would have noticed the small opening & would have been able to fix it right then & there along with the circ with just the numbing cream.

Re: The dreaded question - circumcision.
I have a son. There was no question about doing it. DH and I completely were on the same page.
Biggest reasons (1) DH is and (2) health reasons - keeping it clean.

This was our thinking too. I didn't feel strongly either way (although I've never seen an uncircumcised penis IRL ) so I let DH take the lead on this one when it came to the decision of circumcising DS1. We will circumcise this DS as well.

Re: The dreaded question - circumcision.
DS is and we will do it again if we have a boy. The procedure was quick and DS wasn't phased but I will say that you really need to care for it properly afterwards. After it heals the skin will still reattach so you periodically must pull it apart to prevent this. I had to do this for about 8 months and then it stopped trying to reattach. Not a big deal, but def needs to be done.

We will be circumcising our DS. I'm just scared because I'm reading all these stories where parents had to get the circumcision re-done since it wasn't done correctly in the first place. Does the pediatrician do this?
It's not always bec it wasn't done correctly. Sometimes the parents don't take care of it properly afterwards and it could reattach and then would have to be done again. Just make sure you follow the aftercare instructions that they give you and he should be fine.
And not necessarily at the fault of the parents, but many people are not told to pull the skin down during diaper changes to keep it from reattaching.
