the "European Virus"
....or at least that is what Cuomo is calling it. WTH is with that? Isn't that just as "racist" as calling it the China virus (which I agree is racist)? Can't we just say "coronavirus"? That just really irritates me. Maybe it is just Cuomo who irritates me though....

He says it came from Europe with every.single.one of his briefings.
Now he is interested in opening things up, after killing many, many businesses.
If he hasn't irritated you already, you will be now.

I still can't for the life of me understand how NYC restaurants have been closed since December 7th, after only reopening on September 30th, so many school districts are remote, and now he is saying 12 confirmed cases of the UK strain in our state. But...let's do football games! Yesterday he started talking about opening Broadway and concert halls with rapid testing. I am not saying he is right or wrong. I am saying he is wrong for not making this across the board. Wouldn't it be easier to rapid test people before they sit in a restaurant, than it would be for 300 people outside of a Broadway theater?

Exactly. He makes zero sense. He openly admitted they know that very few cases trace back to indoor dining. But yeah let's close it all down. Now people get take out and gather in private homes- you know, where like 70% + of the cases come from Moron

There is no rhyme or reason for the things he cherry picks. I still think he was on cloud 9 that his team won and he was in a good mood and that is why he is changing his tune. In reality though, he knows he needs the money from these businesses to run the state.

Re: the "European Virus"
I also don't think rapid testing to attend these events is the best idea either since SO many people test negative on a rapid only to test positive on the PCR. So yeah it may weed out a few who have it, but it will miss so many more and now you're sitting on top of each in a Broadway theater with a false sense of security.

If masks work though, what is the problem? (this is not to you but in general)

I can't listen to him anymore. He feels that he knows what's right but clearly doesn't when so many decisions he made, and things he says - he changes his stance months later.
He pretty much shamed us for wanting to send our kids to school - I wouldn't send my kids if they were school age - and now he's saying it doesn't spread in schools and schools need to be open.
Same with restaurants - the spread in restaurants is low - so lets close them so people will get together in their homes where the spread is high.

Masks work. So does social distancing.
Nothing is 100% but let's not pretend that the safety measures we have taken all year have been pointless.

Exactly. It's like birth control. It's effective but never 100%, especially in the case of user error. So many people wear their masks incorrectly to the point that they may as well not be wearing them at all.

Yes, the problem is when people hang out together without the masks.

Many of these people claim they don't do that and don't go many places. Me thinks many people lie

I agree with you but I don't think people think it came from Europe. I believe they are labeling it the "European Virus" because that is where the mutated strain was first detected. No one in the US that has been diagnosed with it has been traveling overseas. I think it's just named that to differentiate.

No, he has always said it came from Europe, even before this new strain.

Not to mention it's not a new virus. It's Covid- that mutated It's the European mutation if you want to call it that.

I was under the impression he called it the European virus because it came from Europe???? We know it came here from Italy, not China like Trump still insists. I assumed that is why Cuomo says European Virus...because Trump calls it the China virus and he is trying to "correct"him.

He is calling it the European virus because the Covid that we got in NY came from Europe (Italy). While Covid originated from China, NY did not get it from that side. It travelled through Europe to NY. That is why in the beginning of this Cuomo was pissed we did not close the boarders soon enough. They stopped China from coming in but not Europe and hence NY got hit first. The new strain they believe was discovered in Europe as well. Well that is what he believes anyways.

He believed that based on science. https://www.contagionlive.com/view/most-early-new-york-covid-19-cases-came-from-europe
... “Based on genetic similarity and phylogenetic analysis of full-length viral genome sequences, most cases diagnosed during the 18 days after the first-reported COVID-19 case in New York State appear to be associated with untracked transmission and potential travel-related exposure,” the authors write.
However, van Bakel and colleagues said it does not appear that most cases originated in Asia. Instead, the majority of introductions of the virus seem to have come from Europe and from elsewhere in the United States. ... Of the remaining isolates, the vast majority (87%) clustered with clade A2a, and the majority of isolates in that clade (72%) are cases of patients with COVID-19 in Europe, suggesting that Europe was the major origin of COVID-19 cases in New York in march, the authors write. ...
https://www.mountsinai.org/about/newsroom/2020/mount-sinai-study-finds-first-cases-of-covid-19-in-new-york-city-are-primarily-from-european-and-us-sources-pr
... “These results show that SARS-CoV-2 came to the New York City area predominately via Europe through untracked transmissions." said Viviana Simon, MD, PhD, Professor of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at ISMMS. "Only one of the cases studied was infected with a virus that was a clear candidate for introduction from Asia, and that virus is most closely related to viral isolates from Seattle, Washington. The study also suggests that the virus was likely circulating as early as late-January 2020 in the New York City area. This underscores the urgent need for early and continued broad testing to identify untracked transmission clusters in the community." ...

Re: the "European Virus"
Exactly. Cuomo is basing that on the facts-- the Covid virus that spread here in NY this past spring came via Europe. He says it in my opinion to counteract Donald saying it's the "China Virus" and "Kung Flu," and commenting on the federal government's lack of closure of the borders to European travelers. I think he thinks Donald was/is reactionary, made decisions not based in science, and racist. I happen to agree.
