yeah, so what, some people do it and don't donate, who cares, millions of dollars raised for a good cause negate people trying to be "cool" , people are reaching here, if you are so easily offended by this on your FB feed something is wrong with you not anyone else

What you're missing though - at least in my experience and opinion - is that I thought it was stupid when I saw all the videos of people doing one OR the other. That was what I was seeing - it was my reality. I wasn't offended, I was just shaking my head.
Now that I've learned that $4 million has been donated - I see those whose posts were on my feed for what they are worth. Which in the grand scheme of things, is nothing. They are attention seekers.
I don't think there is anything wrong with ME for thinking that.

To each his own.

Yeah this really seems like something that should be called stupid. Raising $4 million to help fight against a disease and bringing awareness to people who may have not known what ALS was before? Simply asinine.

In fact, it's so effing stupid that I hope it acts as a precedent and brings about even more dumbass awareness movements to raise money for other charities too.

I'm sorry, but honestly with this post. There is so much anger, hatred, and killing in the world. If you don't want to participate, don't; but look at the disgusting things people do in this world and be happy that some people still care about others.

back to my original post, i guess i should rephrase it?

pouring cold water over your head instead of donating IS stupid. (and yes i know these people did not donate) AND harassing other people into pouring cold water over their head when they would rather just quietly donate IS stupid.

raising awareness / donating is NOT stupid.

sorry to rub so many people the wrong way with my post...........

So what about other charities.
Why is it only for ALS?
Why not cancer, heart disease, AIDS, etc etc.
Donate money.
Don't pour a bucket of water over your head.
I think that is why people are calling it stupid.
Because it doesn't make sense.

I think because this is one of the charities that gets less attention.

True, but there are 100s and 100s of little known charities and little known diseases, etc.
I just don't get it.
But more than that, I don't get the concept. Pour ice water on your head OR donate.
So everyone is pouring ice water on their heads.
Aren't they supposed to be donating instead of doing that?
Flawed if you ask me.

No, its pour ice AND donate or DONT and donate $100.

So you get to donate LESS if you pour the ice water?

Yes but then you get to challenge other people to do it therefore getting more donations by keeping it running.

Re: this stupid ice water challenge....

I just don't see how the ice water challenge is any different than a "walk to raise awareness for....". In both cases, some people donate and walk, some people just walk. Same concept.

And, I've seen people donate for different causes while dumping ice water over their head (specifically Quinn for the Win).

this stupid ice water challenge....

I posted this on someone's FB status yesterday - it may be a little gimmicky, and although I doubt its really spreading *awareness* about what ALS really is, its raising a ton of money, so what is the harm? Hide the video from your feed if you don't want to see it. Donate to another charity if that's what you'd prefer.

honestly, EVERY SINGLE ice water challenge i've seen on my news feed always says the same thing.... "dump a bucket of ice water over your head OR donate to ALS". i've never seen anyone who posts that they are going to dump the water AND donate its always been presented as dump or donate

i think this is the case for a lot of people which is why people are getting a bad taste in their mouth from the ice water challenge. i know i did, until i read this thread

I have the opposite. Every single one posted. I'm dumping and also donating and I challenge you to do the same.

I do, too.

The social media-inspired "Ice Bucket Challenge" to raise awareness and money to fight ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, has become a "transformational moment," ALS Association Development Officer Lance Slaughter told CNBC on Friday.

"Three weeks ago, half the population didn't know what ALS is," Slaughter said in a "Squawk Box" interview. "Now millions of people do, and that's generated hundreds of thousands of contributors to the cause."

And millions of dollars. The association said Friday it has received $9.5 million from July 29 to Aug. 15—that's nearly 500 percent more than the same period last year.

Every day there's news of another celebrity, politician or corporate CEO taking the challenge, which calls for people to dump a bucket of ice water over their heads or donate to charity and then challenge someone else (and make sure to post it on social media). Judging by the outpouring, people are taking the plunge and opening their wallets. "

That's $9.5MM!!!!! I'm pretty sure most people are dumping AND donating. And if not, who the hell cares? PEOPLE ARE DONATING!

Coming this fall: Sing Disney themed karaoke and post a video or donate $100 to Wounded Warriors.

It's just random & sad that people need a social media dare & social media recognition in order to do something good.

It's GREAT that at least a charity is benefitting from the latest social media fad. Imagine if people were this generous all the time & not just when their FB news feed was watching.

Here's my take on it

Let me know if anyone agrees (could just be me)

I love that they raised awareness and money. The plot to get there is wacky but whatever. Good intent.

What I think annoys people is maybe seeing the friends who are normally attention whore$ or drama queens doing it and posting it. I feel like if you see a post by someone you truly LIKE, you don't see it as annoying.
But seeing it from people who are annoying in general? And make everything about them and love any and all attention ? That's what may make people roll eyes.

But those people shouldn't be on your FB anyway haha

Just my theory :)

You would think but those people happen to be my family that I do love even if they are annoying. Lmfao.

But I agree with you!

But so is Chinese auctions, golf outings, Dinner/Drinking Events...those are all ways people try to get others into donating by those people getting something in return for donating to a cause.
It brings awareness and it raises money..who cares how but it works apparently. Even if their are a bunch off A holes who are doing it for attention and didn't donate it showed up on a news feed to hundred of their friends and if even one person donated from seeing that on each A holes news feed that's more than enough.

I think it's stupid because no one on my FB feed is donating, their cheap @sses are just pouring water over their heads for attention.

Raising awareness alone isn't going to help any charity. Congrats to the ones who donated and actually raised money.

Actually, it is. I work in non profit technology. According to Blackbaud, 56% of people who saw a video on social media donated to that charity. Its not about just the person who does the dumping. It is all their FRIENDS. Non profits are struggling. This is great evidence how grassroots media campaigns through FB can help non profits achieve their mission goals.

its a good cause and its great they raised all that money but I have seen it on fb as donate OR do the challenge. And the ones I have seen are young kids so they are not donating. Maybe their parents will I dont know. But I dont see it as annoying I see it as guts to do that. Hopefully they donate to a cause though and its more than a social media dare.

Only on LIF would people find a way to be negative about a "viral movement" that has done ZERO harm and 100% good to the tune of 4 million dollars.

this stupid ice water challenge....

It's a great way to spread awareness and you know what? Not every person is in a position to donate money. I know somebody who has been challenged by 5 people. He dumped 5 buckets of water on himself and donated what he could afford. And it made him feel good to be a part of something that was spreading awareness and to be able to fulfill a donation been if his donation was simply his discomfort. I really can't find a reason for people to be so angry by something so good
