Those with DC in daycare - rotavirus vaccine or not?
Can you tell I am researching vaccines lately. DS has his 2 month checkup next week and I am trying to decide what to do.
This is not a debate on whether to get it or not. I am simply curious as to who got it or didn't and why. I am torn as to what to do here.

Same here. My 1st DD didn't get it cause it wasn't on the schedule when she was 2 months old and i didn't know about it-otherwise she would have got it too..
ETA: I gave it to her cause it's a simple oral vaccine and the side effects if any are very minimal, i'd rather the vaccine than the virus. I don't think you can delay this one either because of the schedule with it.

it was a no-brainer for me, they can wind up in the hospital with IV's and everything if they get the virus. It is an oral vaccine

Same here. The fact that my son is in daycare and I see how sick he gets on a normal basis I decided to stick to the recommended vaccines.
I noticed that while daycare asks for updated immunization records on an annual basis...there is a lot of time in between that no one is checking. While there are requirements, there is the potential for a child to have something and I decided to vaccinate my son to avoid whatever I could.
Personal choice...you have to be comfortable with what you decide.

My ped. does not give this vaccines whether a child is in daycare or not. He said the shot is more dangerous than it is good and can have some horrible medical side effects

really? my doctor said exactly the opposite, that the virus is MUCH worse than any possible side effects

Rotavirus vaccine is oral liquid, no shots involved.

DS is not in day care but I feel vaccines are important and I trust my pediatrician so we did get the rotovirius. PS DS loved it
This is an oral vaccine, DC will drink it, no shot involved.
Also didnt someone on here just have a run in with rotovirius with someone they babysit for?

Re: Those with DC in daycare - rotavirus vaccine or not?
I am very weary of vaccinations...but, I did go ahead with the rotavirus and I am a SAHM.
I know a little boy who had it...his mom said he laid there lifeless and so beyond dehydration. Its very contagious.

I guess everyone's peds. have different opinions. He went over this with me probably almost a year ago but from what I remember, the vaccine was linked to causing problems with a child's intestines. It was also pulled off the shelves at one point.
The vaccine was not created necessarily for the US...although there have been horrible cases of rotovirus and deaths I'm sure, just like with the flu...it was created for 3rd world countries like Africa where medical facilities and medical care are not always available to these children. The death toll from this virus in the US is VERY low compared to other countries. Their were articles and news stories about this awhile ago.

my doctor had not mentioned any death stats...just that if DD did get this virus she would be severly dehydrated on the hospital, sometimes for 2 weeks or more, he has seen a few cases already this year
I personally was not taking that chance

Re: Those with DC in daycare - rotavirus vaccine or not?
We got rotavirus. My doctor mentioned the old vaccine a pp's doctor talked about, the new vaccine is supposedly much safer, no intestinal problems so far. I trust my doctor on this, but it's hard to decide at times. The informaiton is so contradictory.

I opted not to give dd this vaccine---granted b/c the current vaccine has only been out for a short period of time. DD is not in daycare though, my friend's mom watches her.

It wasn't available when Ava was a baby. She wound up in the hospital with it 12 and 18 months. I really thought she was going to die the 2nd time. She lay lifeless in a hospital bed for 5 days the second time.
For baby #2, it is a no-brainer. I never want to go through that again!
