Thoughts- fire safety related...
My SIL just sent this to me in an email...
In Georgia every fourth grader goes through a fire safety course taught by firefighters in the classroom - it's an AMAZING program.
Anyway- they teach the kids to teach their litle brothers and sisters the alarm game, and they say to start at age two... You basically just set the "test" portion of the smoke detector off so that the alarm on it sounds. And you explain first that it's a game, and that when they hear the buzzer the get down on their hands and knees and they crawl to the front door, out the door, and then run to the mailbox (or whatever the meeting place is going to be.) They make it a race or a game or whatever.
They tell us/the kids that you should play 'the game' once a week at first until it becomes second nature to the kids and then just do it once a month as practice. The fireman I had in my class has a two year old and a five year old and he said that when they burn toast the kids drop to their knees and start crawling to the door immediately because they think it's a game.
So- just something to think about!!
Discuss....

Re: Thoughts- fire safety related...
I don't think doing this as a fire drill in your house is a bad idea... just like in school, you want to try and get out ASAP but to call it a game and not discuss what the other potentials are in the event of a fire is SILLY.
If the child thinks its a game, are they really gonna wanna "play" at 2am while in a deep sleep or are they gonna roll over and say "Ill play later"???
I'm really big on talking to my child and discussing all possibilities....
If they think this is a game, and play the same way all the time, what are they going to do when you add "obstacles" (flames) and new "players" (firemen)
I think to do a drill like this in your house is GREAT- but your children should know that sound does not always equal game!

Re: Thoughts- fire safety related...
I grew up in a fire department household and am very impressed with their "program". I would definitely try it.

Re: Thoughts- fire safety related...
All throughtout grade school I can remember practicing fire drills and fire safety.
We would go to the firehouse and they would set up a course with full on smoke etc and we'd have to practice all the drills.
I think it's a GREAT idea for young kids to be aware and learn fire safety early on.
Growing up all the men in my life (father, grandfather, great-uncles, DH) are all volunteer firemen, so I've had fire safety implanted in my brain from an early start.

ITA...
What I dont like about this, is its "presented" as a game, and I think that is wrong...
If kids think its a game and there actually is a fire- I feel it can throw them off.....

Yea, I don't get the "game" aspect of it cuz IMO, that can cause a bit of "excitement" when and if it really does happen...too much giddiness when things would need to be taken seriously.

love it, but I'd call it a drill, not a game.

Thats what Im saying...
Its the middle of the night... alarm goes off- is a kid going to think "ehhh- Im to tired, dont feel llike playing" and roll over and continue to sleep???
I think its a great way to practice but the kids should know that its a DRILL- and that one day when it goes off, it could be because their is a fire..
