I work 3 jobs. You do what you have to do.
I'm very sorry. It's not right and you shouldn't have to work three jobs to support yourself. For the supposed "Greatest Country in the World" we certainly do a ****** job of taking care of our citizens.
I wish there was a 5 page thread on this site with people up in arms about income inequality. That's the real issue here. The the CEO of McDonalds will still be beyond wealthy even if has to pay his workers 15 bucks an hour.
I will NEVER understand getting angry at what a CEO makes. Do you have even the slightest clue the amount of work it takes to even get to that level??? The sacrifices one has to make along the way to even be in that position??? CEO, presidents of companies, top level executives make a $hit ton of money but they have EARNED it and honestly, I don't begrudge them those salaries. It pays to be at the top and not everyone will even come close to making it that far in their careers. If you reach that level it's pretty impressive and you should be compensated well, that level of success is seen by only a select few.
Just not sure why people get their panties in a knot over people who have clearly educated themselves and worked hard to make the money they do. I don't care that the Wal-Mart president is a millionaire, it STILL doesn't mean that a cashier with a HS education and no skills should make more then minimum wage. What is wrong in this world??? There is a reason why it pays to go to college, or become specialized or an expert in your field, or have a career over just a "job". I feel like the generations before us had a work ethic, now everyone just wants a handout.
You do realize $15 dollars an hour comes out to just a little over $17,000 a year if you work a 40 hour week, right? You think the base living of any person in this country should be lower then that? All, this does is makes these peoples lives a little nicer, a little more secure for their children. Why is this so offensive to you?
Your math is WAY off. $15 paid full time annually is $31k+
Same pay salary as an EMT - except they are making french fries and not saving lives.
Exactly and the starting salary for a police officer is only $10,000 more a year. They put their lives at risk everyday. Someone flipping burgers is not.
That is after taxes for one person and I agree EMS/Cops/Fireman are ridiculously underpaid for their jobs.
I doubt by 2021 anyone else will get the same pay increase as they are speaking about for fast food workers.

It took the fast food folks 3 years of lobbying to get this increase. My hope is other unions will do as well as SEIU did for their workers. I'd gladly see my taxes increased if pubic service workers could get larger salaries.

Thoughts on fast food minimum wage raise?
The problem is that other workers don't have unions. Only certain HOSPITALS are unionized, most office workers are not. It's sad, it's frustrating, infuriating. But that's the country we live in. You get what you want by not working. Imagine if the medical office workers decided to strike in order to demand higher wages... what do you think would happen?

I wouldn't be happy to have my taxes increased as MY pay won't be going up that much to be able to afford it. I don't get a $1 raise a year. Many people don't and will they continue to get $1/per year after that? When will it stop? Why would I bother telling my kids to go to college if someone working in Burger King will surpass them after just a few years working there?

Because, those jobs suck! Seriously though, I think your average teenager who worked fast food for a summer or something is going to have no desire to do that for a living. The people who are stuck doing that for a living are not doing it for their love of greasy food or super sweet working conditions. They do it because they have no other choice. And let's say one of your kids actually does like it and is happy in that position. Wouldn't you feel more secure knowing he is making a living wage?

Are you speaking AFTER taxes? Before it is $31,200. Our police officers only start at $41,000.
After taxes. But I'm seeing different numbers depending on family size and what not.
Here is something to read regarding how much 2 people make before and after taxes:
Joe legal works in construction, has a Social Security number and makes $25.00 per hour with taxes deducted.
Jose illegal also works in construction has no Social Security number and makes $15.00 per hour cash, under the table.
Ready?... now pay attention....
Joe legal: $25.00 per hour × 40 hours = $1,000.00 per week or $52,000.00 per year. Now, take 31% away for State and Federal taxes. Joe legal now has $31,231.00.
Jose illegal: $15.00 an hour × 40 hours = $600.00 per week or $31,200.00 per year. Jose illegal pays no taxes. Jose illegal now has $31,200.00.
Joe legal pays medical and dental insurance with limited coverage for his family at $600.00 per month, or $7,200.00 per year. Joe legal now has $24,031.00.
Jose illegal has full medical and dental coverage through the State and local clinics and emergency hospitals at a cost of $0.00 per year. Jose illegal still has $31,200.00.
Joe legal makes too much money and is not eligible for food stamps or welfare. Joe legal spends $500.00 per month for food or $6,000.00 per year. Joe legal now has $18,031.00.
Jose illegal has no documented income and is eligible for food stamps, WIC and welfare. Jose illegal still has $31,200.00.
Joe legal pays rent of 1,200.00 per month or $14,400.00 per year. Joe legal now has $9,631.00.
Jose illegal receives $500.00 per month Federal rent subsidy. Jose illegal pays out that $500.00 per month or $6,000.00 per year. Jose illegal still has $31,200.00.
Joe legal pays $200.00 per month or $2,400.00 per year for car insurance. Some of that is uninsured motorist insurance. Joe legal now has $7,231.00.
Jose illegal says, "We don't need no stinkin' insurance."... and still has $31,000.00.
Joe legal has to make his $7,231.00 stretch to pay utilities, gasoline.. etc.
Jose illegal has to make his $31,200.00 stretch to pay utilities, gasoline and what he sends out of the country every month....
Joe legal now works overtime on Saturdays or gets a part time job after work.
Jose illegal has nights and weekends off to enjoy with his family.
Joe legal's and Jose illegal's children both attend the same elementary school.
Joe legal pays for his children's lunches while...
Jose illegal's children get a government-sponsored lunch.
Jose illegal's children have an after school ESL program.
Joe legal's children go home.
Now, when they reach college age...
Joe legal's kids may not get into a State school and may not qualify for scholarships, grants or other tuition help, even though Joe has been paying for State schools through his taxes, while...
Jose illegal's kids go to the, 'head of the class' because they are a minority.
Joe legal and Jose illegal both benefit from the same police and fire services, but Joe paid for them and Jose did not.
Do you get it, now?
If we vote for or support any politician that supports illegal aliens,... we are part of the problem.
Its way PAST time to take a stand for America and Americans!
We need to keep this going -- we need to make changes ASAP!
What are you waiting for?...Pass it on!
Holy crap. This is seriously offensive.

I do have a child who works in the food industry. I do NOT want only THAT for them no matter if they are making a living wage. I believe those jobs were intended for kids and older people who need some extra money. Not to support a family. That is why you go to college, to get a decent job. To maybe start at $15/hour and work your way up.

There's an article that was in the NYT about the wage increase and how a 61 year old woman has been working at Wendy's for 9 years and makes $9/hour. They didn't go into her skills or why she works at Wendy's so I'm going to assume that she needed a job while in her 50's and probably had little to no skills- perhaps she was a sahm and her husband, who was the breadwinner, passed suddenly. So now she's older, little to no skills, and needs a job but probably couldn't get one anywhere else due to her age and lack of skillsand after 9 years only makes $9 an hour. In the article it states that she's just happy that she'll be able to pay her rent on time. These are the people who will be benefiting from this increase. And this is the reason why I think it's a good thing.

I do have a child who works in the food industry. I do NOT want only THAT for them no matter if they are making a living wage. I believe those jobs were intended for kids and older people who need some extra money. Not to support a family. That is why you go to college, to get a decent job. To maybe start at $15/hour and work your way up.
Can we also discuss the "older people who need money" argument? We are talking about people of RETIREMENT AGE. People who are on social security. Again, I reference the CEO pay discrepancy, I reference the tax loopholes, I reference the outrageous profits for some of these companies, and again, the company tax loopholes. Shouldn't we be OUTRAGED that our elderly, our wise, our beloved grandparents, are needing to work? It's one thing if you CHOSE to work at that age because you want to, but the idea that after half a century of working, and saving in many cases, it ends up NOT being enough and they need to return to the workforce? I'm sorry, but how is THAT not where our outrage lies?

This is reality, unfortunately. Just like others know people who scam the system, this happens everyday too.
More like seriously realistic. It explains a lot in simple terms. Now I'd like to see someone defend the off the books worker in this scenario

Yep..happens quite often. Not all immigrants come here to take advantage of our system but there are plenty that do just that. For anyone to think that it does not drain our system in some way sort or form is naive.

Offensive?? I just don't understand how ANYONE can think $15/hr is reasonable for that type of job. It's ridiculous.
$17K/yr to flip a burger sounds about right to me. Sorry, but it does. If that salary isn't suitable to someone then do what the rest of us do.............get a better education, get a better job, work more, work harder, get a skill, make yourself more valuable.
Minimum wage should NOT exceed the hourly rate for a job that requires an actual skill, or training, or education.
I'm going to suggest you read or re-read the the one study and the article I posted before. It's not as easy as you're making it seem. Those are the facts. Not some "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" mantra. Some people aren't luck enough to even have boots.
That's life. Life isn't fair. Life isn't equal.

Holy crap. This is seriously offensive.
This is reality, unfortunately. Just like others know people who scam the system, this happens everyday too.
Yep..happens quite often. Not all immigrants come here to take advantage of our system but there are plenty that do just that. For anyone to think that it does not drain our system in some way sort or form is naive.
Yikes. There are some serious misinformation and just plain wrong statements here. This blog breaks it up with citations.Joe vs Jose

However that subject is for another thread.

I didn't even read past the first "Jose illegal" because that was extremely offensive. How anyone can sit there and write that is beyond me.
And just like every system, yes there will be abusers and there will be more people who are in actual need. Why punish those? That I don't and will never understand.

...., this is what the 1 percent wants. Us poor folk (and yeah we all are if you're not the 1 percent) fighting among one another and keeping each other down.
While They have loop holes and a set of rules that only apply to them. Must be nice.
Like the CEO who lays off much of his workforce yet still takes a bonus. But Joe Schmoe getting $15 is a crime right
Yep.
If you're a CEO making billions and you're paying your workers poverty wages, you're not successful IMO.
Maybe before 2008 you could walk into a fast food place staffed by HS kids, but that is no longer the case from what I have seen- I see lots of middle aged adults and I bet most of them are here legally.
I feel like the people who are screaming about how this is ridiculous are the same ones who complain about welfare. It can't be both. Do you want people to have a living wage or need benefits?

Holy crap. This is seriously offensive.
You're taking offense to the joe and Jose reference I imagine.
Look past that for a minute and replace Jose with Mike.
Do you see what the problem is?
I didn't even read past the first "Jose illegal" because that was extremely offensive. How anyone can sit there and write that is beyond me.
And just like every system, yes there will be abusers and there will be more people who are in actual need. Why punish those? That I don't and will never understand.
Unfortunately, lately, I have met more and more people and heard more and more stories of people scamming the system one way or another (mostly disability). It is not getting better, but worse as more people are getting in on it and finding out how easy it is to get money without working.

Re: Thoughts on fast food minimum wage raise?
I don't want to quote the "Joe Legal' post, but there is something wrong if Joe Legal is getting that much in taxes taken out and has a family. Skewed example.

Thoughts on fast food minimum wage raise?
I don't think the tax % is skewed. I pay 31% on my regular jobs and about 34% on my 2nd job (self employed - I file a 1099) It sucks, but its what it is.
