tip if planning on breastfeeding

If you are thinking about breastfeeding, my mom ( a nurse ) told me to take the rough edge of the towel and rub it on the nipple when you get out of the shower - it hurts a little but it help prepare my nipples for breastfeeding

How does it prepare them? What does it do to the nipple besides getting them used to pain? Chat Icon

It probably toughens up the skin on the nipple I would imagine...

ladies there is no need to do this. My aunt told me the same thing, as long as you learn to latch the baby on the correct way, you will be ok, possibly a little sore but no need to torture yourself!! Get the help of the nurses and lactation consultants at the hospital before you go home so by the time you leave you are better prepared and learn!

Hate to say it, but this is my second go round and nothing prepped my nips for breastfeeding. Maybe I was super sensitive but the pain never stopped and I had no problem with a latch. My mom is a maternity nurse and lactation consultant and I will honestly tell you that one of my nipples fell half off. I really had to do some "mind over matter" to be successful and stick with it, because I believe it is the right thing to do, and the pain never went away. I will do it again for my next DC and I'm hoping the second times a charm.

I actually heard from a friend whose lactation consultant told her to start using lanisoh cream a few months before having the baby. She said this would help to prevent the soreness.

Oh goodness - I don't think this is necessary at all. And no, it is not as bad as it sounds. It is all about the latch. Once you get the latch right, the pain goes away. If it was that painful, no one would do it.

I totally agree with the above post. Its all about the latch. Just soreness in the beginning and use lansinoh it helps a lot. Again my best advice use the nurses and lactation consultants at the hospital every time you are going to feed. I was lucky enough to have a LC at my pediatrician so it was great. I highly recommend it!

If your baby latches properly, you won't have sore nips at all.

Completely agree! I am on day 3 of BFing, they are a little sore right as she latched but i am not in any kind of pain. If your latch is bad it will HURT! Have an LC show you the correct way to latch and you'll be fine.

Re: tip if planning on breastfeeding

with number 1, i saw the flames of hell everytime he latched. felt like i was pushing razors out of nips.

this time around, i don't care if i have to pull her off 20 times...if latch isn't right, she isn't eating. good to go from the start.

I'm having the opposite experience. I had a great time with BFing my first DS. He always got a great latch and I don't remember being uncomfortable. With this baby, he gets a decent latch, but he sucks so gosh darn hard that the first 10 seconds or so literally make me cringe. Now mind you, I did this successfully for 5 months with DS so it's not like I'm a beginer. And for the record, my nipples are not drying out or cracking, wich is another reason Iknow his latch is fine. He's just a serious sucker.

The nip went back to normal... fire nips is a great way of putting it. I had a fine latch I think it was just that my son was a piranha. I fully intend on doing it again with this baby and I fully intend on "bending the lactation consultant's ear," about my previous experience to try and improve this one. Either way, it's definitely about will and I'm willing to try again!
