My mom is a maternity nurse and lactation consultant and I will honestly tell you that one of my nipples fell half off.

Re: tip if planning on breastfeeding

Can't the towel/rubbing the lotion cause preterm labor? Might be a dumb question. I thought nipple stimulation was a way to bring on labor towards the end. Wouldn't doing these cause that?

Yes!

I just got back from a breastfeeding class and I mentioned this to the lactation consultant. She said do not do this!!

She said this is an old method that people did before realizing that nipple chafing/irritation is preventable. She also said nipples should not get sore if the baby is latching properly so they don't need to be "prepared" like that.

She also said do not do this b/c you are just irritating your nipples and can do exactly what you said- put you into preterm labor!!

Just thought I would pass along the info.

I know my nips are relieved to hear this news

I did not do anything to "prepare" and never had any pain. Maybe some soreness here and there, but it was never painful.

ladies there is no need to do this. My aunt told me the same thing, as long as you learn to latch the baby on the correct way, you will be ok, possibly a little sore but no need to torture yourself!! Get the help of the nurses and lactation consultants at the hospital before you go home so by the time you leave you are better prepared and learn!

Completely agree! I am on day 3 of BFing, they are a little sore right as she latched but i am not in any kind of pain. If your latch is bad it will HURT! Have an LC show you the correct way to latch and you'll be fine.

Yup, so true. And after awhile, you will get used to it anyway. There is literally nothing you can do to prepare. I am over 2 1/2 weeks BFing and the soreness is getting better. And it is only when she latches on. Once she is latched properly, I don't feel anything!

I actually heard from a friend whose lactation consultant told her to start using lanisoh cream a few months before having the baby. She said this would help to prevent the soreness.

YES!!! DO THIS!!!!!!! BFing should not hurt, but it's not always a walk in the park either. I found that the softer the nipples were the less it hurt since they were not cracking and bleeding. "roughing" them up only leads to infection and scabs. They should be soft and VERY well moisturized! DO NOT abuse them!

Nipple stimulation can put you in labor, but were talking HOURS of nipple stimulation. You can't do it just by touching them to much. You have to be on a "mission" or have a husband that is too obsessedChat Icon
